Dear Parents, We are very proud of our St. Laurence School Board for receiving the 2019 Outstanding School Board Award this month. This is the second time SLCS has won this distinction. The board was recognized for their detailed planning and hard work in creating our 3-5 year Strategic Plan. That plan began back in 2016-2017 and is currently under revision as we develop new goals for the future. A summary of the full long-range plan can be found on our website under the school board tab if you are interested. We have always been blessed with wonderful volunteers on all our boards and committees and like all of them, this group works tirelessly to ensure we remain successful and viable, while living our mission as a Catholic school. If you have ever wondered about how the school develops policies, sets the budget and tuition and meets the current needs of our students, consider serving on the school board. April 16th is School Board Information Night if you would like to learn more. A special thank you to Jackie DeGroot and our former school board presidents, David Wells and Nora Sessions for presenting the process used in developing the latest SLCS Strategic Plan. They spoke that morning to boards and

administrators from other Catholic schools and representatives from the Archdiocesan School Board. We thank them and our current board for their service and leadership. As we serve as a pastoral instrument of the parish, please join us at the Parish Bazaar this weekend! There will be fun for everyone and several of our alum, that are members of the Spectrum 3847 Robotics team from Strake and St. Agnes will be demonstrating their 2019 competition robot this Sunday Sunday, October 20th at 10:30 am. They plan to stay afterwards to answer questions and allow kids to take a closer look. This competition robot they will be displaying competed at the semi finals in the 2019 World Championships in Houston earlier this year. As part of their community outreach, these students are visiting area events in order to promote interest in STEM. We are so proud of our graduates and appreciate this opportunity to see how they are flourishing in high school!! Thank you to Mrs. DeMoor for sharing this information. God bless, Suzanne Barto

ORGANIZATION AND TIME MANAGEMENT SUPPORT FOR STUDENTS IN GRADES 5th, 6th AND 7th Mrs. Schurman is planning to start support groups for students needing help with organization and time management strategies to help with academic success. Teachers have recommended some students and notified parents. Parents may also inquire if they feel their child needs support in these areas as well. Some indicators that students may need this help are: having a hard time keeping locker, binders or assignments organized; not using the agenda regularly, find difficulty in keeping up with school and homework assignments and grades are suffering.

● For 6th and 7th graders, Mrs. Schurman will offer support from 7:25am-7:55am on most Monday mornings starting October 28th.

● 5th graders will meet with Mrs. Schurman during their lunch/ recess time once a week on Tuesdays starting October 29th.

Limited space is available and students must return a permission slip (5th grade HERE and 6th/7th grade HERE) to the homeroom teacher or Mrs. Schurman by Wednesday, October 23rd. SEL/SECOND STEP PROGRAM  Students in grades K-8th have finished the first lessons. Here are the SEL HOME LINKS.

SUPPORT THE PARISH BAZAAR THIS WEEKEND

The St. Laurence Church Bazaar is fast approaching. It will be held this weekend on Saturday and Sunday, October 19 and 20. While many of you are already volunteers for the bazaar through your or your children’s church organizations, we do have a special request for volunteers that are VIRTUS trained. The bazaar has a requirement to provide a volunteer with VIRTUS training to supervise any ride operator provided by our children’s ride vendor. We will need one VIRTUS volunteer per ride at all times. We currently have a need for VIRTUS volunteers to fill 1 or 2 (2-hour slots) on both Saturday and Sunday.

As the People Power Chair, I am making this appeal to our SLCS community because there is a high percentage of you that are already VIRTUS/Safe Environment certified as compared to the general church population. I hope that you will consider assisting in this need. If you are able, please sign up HERE

END OF THE QUARTER-CATCH UP ON TUITION AND FEES GENTLE REMINDER

Please take this opportunity now that we are at the end of the 1st quarter to catch up on any late payments to Sami’s Catering or FACTS Tuition. We want to avoid any financial blocks on your FACTS/RenWeb account or your child not being able to purchase their selection for lunch. Thank you for working with us and please reach out to our business office if you have any questions or concerns.

AFTER SCHOOL ENRICHMENT PROGRAM

IT’S SO EASY TO EXTEND YOUR LEARNING WITH MANY FUN

CLASSES! NEXT SESSION STARTS SOON!

SLCS offers a great after school enrichment program! It consists of a variety of mini-courses in different areas of interest for our students. Our second After School Enrichment course will begin November 4th. Please note a minimum/maximum number of students is required to have the courses. Click HERE for a list of awesome courses and registration forms.

It’s SPELLING BEE time!

● Spelling Bee Study Lists are now on RenWeb under Parent Resources.

● Classroom Spelling Bees will take place on October 28th-30th.

● School-Wide Spelling Bee will take place on November 13th.

TIPS ON WHAT TO STUDY FOR A CLASSROOM, GRADE LEVEL, OR SCHOOL-WIDE SPELLING BEE The 2020 School Spelling Bee Study List is divided into three levels of difficulty: One Bee, Two Bee and Three Bee. Students should start with the words at their skill level. In general, we recommend level One Bee for lower elementary, Two Bee for upper elementary, and Three Bee for middle school.

When spellers are comfortable with the words at their starting difficulty level, they are ready to learn the remainder of the 2020 School Spelling Bee Study List, which includes all three levels.

Classes will preview our Book Fair on Wednesday, 10/23. We will be open for sales on Thursday, 10/24 and Friday, 10/25 (Conference Day) from 8:00am till 2:30 pm. We gladly accept cash, checks, and credit cards. If you have any questions, please email our library HERE.

FALL CONFERENCE DAY IS ON FRIDAY, OCTOBER 25TH. NO SCHOOL THIS DAY.

ECC AND ELEMENTARY

ECC and Elementary parents were able to sign up for a conference time online through Sign-Up Genius. If you have not done so, please refer to the sign-up genius link sent by your child’s teacher. These conferences are held in the child’s classroom and last for 15 minutes. Students in PreK-2nd Grade are not encouraged to attend. Students in 3rd Grade and above should attend with at least one parent. The conference will be teacher-led. We look forward to seeing you, and thank you for supporting your child in the trinity of parent, child, and educator.

MIDDLE SCHOOL (Grades 5-8)

Middle School conferences will be held in the gym with core course teachers from 7:30-11:30am and 12:15-3:45pm. Teachers will have lunch from 11:30am -12:15pm and conferences will not be held at that time. There is no need to sign up for a conference time. Simply come to the gym at a time that is convenient for you. There will be chairs for sitting while waiting to meet with the teacher/s of your choice. Parents and students must meet with at least one teacher but may meet with as many teachers as you would like. You are encouraged to specifically meet with teachers of subjects in which the student may be having difficulty. If your child is doing well, there is no need to meet with all the teachers. Some teachers work with 150 students and feel a greater need to meet with the parents of students who are struggling so that suggestions can be made for improvement. If your child is struggling or has specific needs and requires more time than ten minutes, we recommend that you set an individual appointment with the teacher/s for a later date. We appreciate your consideration in this matter. Auxiliary and elective course teachers will be meeting in their classrooms and/or offices, not in the gym (i.e. Health, PE, Art, Choir, Spanish, Band, Enrichment). Ms. Gunter is the only elective course teacher who also teaches a core subject therefore, she will be in the gym. Mrs. McNeil, the Band Director, will be available from 10:45am until 1:45pm. Awards such as Honor Roll, Samaritan Award and/or Good Behavior Award certificates will go home with the students in the red folders and will not be given out on Conference Day.
