RestorativePracticesWhere appropriate, a Restorative Practices approach will be used to deal with misbehaviour. RestorativePracticesisawholeschoolapproachtopromotingresilienceandaimstocontributetothebuildingofpositiverelationshipsinourschoolcommunity.Itisfocusedonhelpingstudentsbecomeawareoftheimpactoftheirbehaviours on others through personal accountability and learning from a conflict situation. An importantcomponentofRestorativePracticesisthefocusonrestoringrelationshipsafterharmhasbeendone.Restorative Practices promotes inclusiveness, relationship building and problem solving. Instead ofpunishment,studentsareencouragedtoreflectonandtakeresponsibilityfortheiractionsandcomeupwithplans to repair harm. The Restorative Practices process provides an opportunity for discussion with thestudentinrelationtowhathashappened.

BullyingPolicySuccessPrimarySchool

DefinitionofBullyingBullying is a termwidely and at times, incorrectly used. In recent times, people use the term ‘bullying’ todescribeanythingthatoccursatschoolthatupsetsachild.Onestudentrefusingtoplaywithanotherisnotbullying.Anisolatedincidentofconflictisnotbullying.Rather,thesearepartandparcelofchildrenlearningsocialnorms.Bullying isarepetitivepatternofbehaviourbyoneormorepersonstowardsanotherwhich isintendedtohurt,injure,threaten,frighten,embarrassorupsetordiscomfortthatperson.Bullyingrepresentsanimbalanceofpowerortheattempttogaincontroloveranotherperson.Itispersistentandrepetitive.

ExamplesofBullyingBehaviourPhysicalPersistent pushing, hitting, bumping, kicking, obstructing, confining, stealing, damaging or interfering withpersonalproperty.

VerbalPersistent threats of violence, name-calling, teasing, mocking, taunting, making put-down comments,belittling,insulting,shoutingatorswearingat.

CovertbullyingSuchaslyingaboutsomeone,spreadingrumours,playinganastyjokethatmakethepersonfeelhumiliatedorpowerless,mimickingordeliberatelyexcludingsomeone.

CyberBullyingEpisodesofwritingabusivee-mails,SMS,cybermessagesornotes.

Social/PsychologicalPersistentepisodesofexcludingfromactivities,ignoringorthreateninglooks

SuccessPrimarySchoolPolicyStatementWe recognise, value and provide for diversity by building a school community in which all individuals areequally valued, respected and includedmembers. Success Primary School does not tolerate bullying. Discussing bullying in role-play situations, encourage bully to see perspective of the victim in role

play;9. Developing programs to assist bullies work co-operatively with others rather than in a

confrontationalway.

Ignoreitifpossible–ifyoushowthatyouarenotupset,theharassmentmaystop;6. Laughitoff,usehumour;7. Buildyourownprotectionbyestablishingfriends;8. Talktopeoplewithwhomyoufeelcomfortable.Thesemaybefriends,family,orstaffmembers;9. Talkingtoanadultisnot‘dobbing’;10. Besmartaboutavoidinghigh-riskplacesandtimes;11. Teachprotectivebehaviours.

Asolutioncantaketimebutdoingnothingmaynotsolvetheproblem.

Wesupportstudentswhoarebeingbulliedby:1. Listeningempatheticallyandgatheringinformationfromthevictim;2. Offeringnecessarysupport;3. Restoringnormalroutineassoonaspossible;4. Counselingbyappropriatestaffmembersinvolvingteachingofmoreassertiveresponsestobullying

incidents;5. Informingclassteachers,parents/caregiversofbothpartiesandmonitoringbehavior;6. Workingtoimprovetheself-esteemofvictimsthroughsocialskillsprograms.

Success Primary School employs a range of sanctions against bullying incidents, depending on theseriousnessofthesituation.Theseinclude:

1. Meetings/discussionswithbulliesandvictims;2. Discussionswithparentsandstudentstogether;3. ReferraltoStudentServicesforfurtheraction;4. WithdrawalfromExtra-Curricularactivities;5. Suspensions/Exclusionfromschool;6. Involvesthepoliceandotheragenciesasnecessary.

ProactivestrategiesemployedbySuccessPrimarySchoolThisschoolcurrentlyhasanumberofprogramsestablishedtopromoteacaringandsupportiveenvironment.Theseeducativeandpositiveprogramsshouldensurethatbullyingandviolenceareminimised.Someoftheseinclude:

1. Behaviourmanagementpolicyincorporatinglowkeyresponsesandteacherwitness;2. UsesStudentSupportServiceswherenecessary;3. Restorativepracticesapproachtomediation;4. ValuesEducationprogramrunacrosstheschool;5. Roleplay–differentscenariosareplayedoutwhichconsiderdifferentpointsofview;6. Incursionsrelatedtobullying;7. Discussesappropriatestandardsofbehaviourandschoolruleswithallstudents;8. InclusionofSocialSkillsprogrammeimplemented.

An Application for Enrolment form must be completed for each child by the parent or guardian. Onceenrolmentisaccepted,anEnrolmentFormmustbecompleted.BirthCertificatesAchild’sbirthcertificateorextractmustbeproducedbeforechildrenarepermittedtocommenceschool.Admissionproceduresarecarriedoutinthemainschooloffice.ChildrenfromareasotherthanSuccessChildrencanbeenrolledfromoutofour intakeareaifvacanciesexist. PreferencemustalwaysbegiventothoselivingwithinthelocalintakeareabutifyouwishforyourchildtoattendSuccessPSandyouliveoutsideourlocalintakearea,yourapplicationcanbeconsidered,butonlyifvacanciesexist.ChildrenfromOverseasForenrolling childrennew to the country, the current (appropriately stamped)passportmustbe shownonenrolment.ChildrenonholidayvisasarenoteligibleforenrolmentintheGovernmentschoolsystem.ImmunisationRecordAllACIRimmunisationrecordsmustbeprovidedtotheschoolonenrolment.Itisadvisedthatimmunisationsbekeptuptodate.Ifyourchildhasrecentlystartedatschoolcouldyoupleasetakespecialnoteandfillintheimmunisation information on the school health card. InaccordancewiththeSchoolEducationAct(1999),primaryschoolsmayaskupto$60.00perchildperyearforschoolfees.Duringthecompulsoryyearsofschooling(PrePrimary–Year6),schoolfeesarereferredtoasVoluntary Contributions. Schools rely upon the payment of voluntary contributions to purchase items toenhance the educational experience for all students. Your decision to support the school’s endeavoursthrough payment of the voluntary contributions is greatly appreciated. When it is considered that thisamountstotheequivalentof$1.50perweek,itisexceptionalvalueformoney.Shouldyoubeexperiencingfinancial difficulties, you are invited to discuss thematter in confidencewith the Principal. Early paymenthelpstheschooltoquicklyestablishitsbudgetarypriorities.

SuccessPSprovidesprogramsforKindergartenandPrePrimarystudents.PrePrimaryisthefirstcompulsoryyearofschoolinginWesternAustralia.ArrivalandDepartureTimesSafetyIntheinterestofyourchild’ssafetyandwelfare,nochildwillbeallowedtoleavethecentresunaccompaniedorwithapersonotherthantheirparentsorlegalguardian,withoutyourwrittenpermission.Pleasemakesurechildrenaredeliveredtoandcollectedfromthecentres.Pleasehelpyourchilddevelopanunderstanding of the importance of punctuality. PUNCTUALITY

It is important that childrenarriveat school in sufficient timeprior to thecommencementof lessons.Theyneed time to organise their books, pencils, etc and prepare for the day ahead. Once teaching hascommenced, a timetable with established routines operates and children arriving late not only miss thecommencementoflessonsbutalsointerrupttheremainderoftheclass.

ATTENDANCEPunctualityandregularattendanceassistinindividualandclassprogress.Ifachildistobelateorabsent,abriefwrittenexplanationisrequiredcontainingthefollowinginformation:

ABSENCESTHROUGHHOLIDAYS

Familiesremovingstudentsfromschoolforaperiodoftimecausesdisruptiontothechild’slearning.Astheseabsencesdonotmeetthecriterialegallydefinedforchildrenmissingschool,itisschoolpolicythat,otherthana diary and daily reading, noworkwill be set for students during their period of absence. Youmaybeawarethattherehavebeenongoingissueswithtrafficandparkingcongestionaroundtheschool.TheSchoolhas instigatedsomeplanningworkwithTheCityofCockburntohelpalleviatethissituationandwillcontinuewiththisworktoensurethebestpossibleoutcomesareachieved.Pleasemakesureyouareawareofthechangesrelevanttoyourtransportneeds.Alltrafficandparkingby-lawswillbefullyenforcedbytheRangerthroughouttheschoolyear.
