The two hour late start was scheduled to allow our faculty me to work in our media center. The faculty took close to two hours to move books from storage to the book- shelves in our media center. An addional bookcase was brought in to the room and books were placed in order. Cleanup was also done back in the storage room to give us more space for textbooks and equipment. The raonale for sharing this informaon with you is not merely to update you on faculty acvies. That day was a good re- minder for all of us about the blessing of working together to accomplish a task. It also gave us an opportunity to give thanks to God for the blessings that we have received through the renovaon of our media center. If you haven’t seen it yet this year, I’d encourage you to come in and take and a look! It really is very funconal and looks great, too! We are also blessed with a wonderful student body and such a supporve group of parents. It is such a blessing to see you at MVL events and supporng your student! With the students and parents we are blessed with, our work is so much easier be- cause we are engaged in our mission of “training students for Chrisan lives” together. We can’t underesmate what a bless- ing that it! As we bid farewell to 2014 and welcome in 2015, we give thanks to God for the support of our associaon and everyone in it. Blessings Abound! Earlier this month, we had a two hour late start. No, it wasn’t weather related. The two hour late start was scheduled to allow our faculty time to work in our media center. The faculty took close to two hours to move books from storage to the book-shelves in our media center. An additional bookcase was brought in to the room and books were placed in order. Cleanup was also done back in the storage room to give us more space for textbooks and equipment. The rationale for sharing this information with you is not merely to update you on faculty activities. That day was a good re-minder for all of us about the blessing of working together to accomplish a task. It also gave us an opportunity to give thanks to God for the blessings that we have received through the renovation of our media center. If you haven’t seen it yet this year, I’d encourage you to come in and take and a look! It really is very functional and looks great, too! We are also blessed with a wonderful student body and such a supportive group of parents. It is such a blessing to see you at MVL events and supporting your student! With the students and parents we are blessed with, our work is so much easier be-cause we are engaged in our mission of “training students for Christian lives” together. We can’t underestimate what a bless-ing that it! As we bid farewell to 2014 and welcome in 2015, we give thanks to God for the support of our association and everyone in it. You continue to support the mission and ministry of Minnesota Valley Lutheran high school and for that, we are so apprecia-tive! May God continue to bless all of us as we fulfill our mission of “training students for Christian lives on earth and for eter-nity!”

  • A reminder that school resumes on January 5th for a full day of class and that there will be no school on January 19th.

Senior Photos Needed! The MVL yearbook needs your senior photo. Please reserve good judgment for apparel and poses. The main focus of these pictures must be your face. It should be clearly visible (no sunglasses) and close enough to see (no far away shots). These photos do not need to be professional photos. All photos are subject to review by the yearbook com-mittee. The deadline for senior photos is April 11th, 2013. Please e-mail your photo to Mr. Jaspersen at [email protected]. If you have no digital copy, submit a glossy photo to Mr. Jaspersen.

Tennessen Warning There are times when the administration of MVLHS needs to investigate as to whether policies regarding harassment, discrimination, participation in activities, etc. have been violated. We have been advised to share the Tennessen Warn-ing with those being interviewed prior to the questions being asked. The MVLHS Board of Directors has written a policy that addresses such situations. What follows is a summary of the document. This information has also been added to the MVL Student Handbook. If you are interested in more information on this policy, please contact Mr. Plath or Mr. Buboltz.

TENNESSEN WARNING The Tennessen Warning states that an agency or institution can request individuals to supply confidential or private information concerning them. The warning must include: 1. Why the data is being collected from them and how the school intends to use it. 2. Whether the individual may refuse or is legally required to supply the data. 3. Any consequence to the individual for either supplying or refusing to supply the data. 4. The identity of other persons or entities authorized by law to receive the data.

Instant Alert Updates With the cold weather upon us it may happen that we decide to start school late, close school for the day, dismiss early, or cancel after school activities. In such cases, the decision will be announced through our Honeywell Instant Alert system. If you have not yet registered your account please go to the MVL website http://www.mvl.org/student-life/school-closing-alerts and follow the instructions to register your student(s). You can cus-tomize the phone numbers and ways you will receive notification. If you have registered in the past, be sure to log in and make sure all your information is current for each student that you have attending MVL. Families with multiple students enrolled at MVL should have the same primary contact information for each student. Otherwise, parents may miss some alerts that only pertain to one or the other of their students. It is difficult to get messages to students during the school day when we are trying to notify the media and other enti-ties about closings and delays. Make sure your Instant Alert account is up to date so you will receive the notice as soon as it is made. As always, if you have any questions about your Instant Alert account, please contact the MVL office. Thanks for your cooperation!

  • Procedure for NHS Membership for Upcoming Selection In the past a plan was implemented and seemed to work very well to avoid misunderstandings concerning selection for National Honor Society (NHS). The first criterion of the cumulative GPA remains the same. Any non-member senior or junior who has cumulative GPA of 3.5 or better will receive an invitation in January of 2015. This will be in the form of a packet of materials that student should be discussing with you, their parent(s). As before, once they receive the invitation, the position of their GPA has no bearing on their selection. If selected, they are expected to stay within these scholastic parameters in order to

maintain membership, as well as to faithfully attend monthly meetings, and participate in the chapter’s service activi-ties. The invitation requires them to fill out a form concerning their participation, their leadership opportunities, their ser-vice activities, and their employment. They also have a section in which they are to explain why they want to be a part of this SERVICE organization. The addition of a letter of recommendation from a source outside of MVL rounds out their obligations. This letter would be from a non-family member who is not an MVL coach or MVL teacher—this includes non-faculty who coach at MVL. Someone who knows the candidate quite well and can vouch for the candidate’s work ethic, leadership, responsibility, and character will be good to contact. A form will be provided for this recommenda-tion. The second change is that the faculty’s opportunity to assess each candidate will be more objective (based on fact) rather than subjective (which can include opinion). The selection process will continue to follow the guidelines set by our constitution and by-laws. We will follow these changes again this year. Juniors and seniors who qualify with their GPA will receive an invitation to pursue membership. At that time, they may decide they are not interested, or distance from school is a factor, or their job or co-curriculars prohibit them from pursuing membership. All students receiving an invitation must return a form (included in the packet) regardless of whether or not they plan to pursue membership. On the other hand, a sub-mitted application does not guarantee membership nor does non-selection indicate a student has done something wrong. It merely indicates that there is room for growth in meeting any of the required high standards.

Christmas Gifts for Faculty and Staff Thank you to all who made contributions towards the Faculty and Staff Christmas gifts. MVL script was purchased for all of them. This was one way we could all show our appreciation for all the work and time they have invested in the training of our children. Basketball Concession Workers Still Needed! Thank you to all who have already signed up to work in the concession stand this basketball season. There are still spots available. This is a great opportunity to meet new families and to support the school. To sign up to help at the concession stand go to www.volunteerspot.com . You can also contact Kelly Diersen at [email protected]. Another option is to put your name on a list of “go to people” who might be able help out at a late notice. • Streaming Basketball Games and Other Events Maybe you have noticed or heard that we have streamed a few volleyball games this fall and have tried a few basket-ball games this month. It’s been hit or miss which games we will stream only because we need help. Our students en-joy watching the games and would rather cheer for their classmates, than run an iPad. All you have to do is turn on the iPad, touch the app, push record, and follow the action. You never have to talk or stop the iPad until the game is finished. If you would like to learn more about it or try it call or email me at 507-354-6851 or [email protected]. We stream on www.highschoolcube.com . You will have to set up an account and login then find Minnesota Valley Luther-an High School. You may view the event live or anytime as long as it is up online. MVL Activities’ Scores and Updates on Twitter You can follow all the MVL activities on Twitter. If you have a Twitter account, follow us at MVL Activities @MVLActivities. Game news and scores will be updated as soon as the information is received. Go Chargers! Schedule Changes If you would like up to the minute game, match or meet changes, go to our website (www.mvl.org) and click on “Athletics”. Then click on “Athletic Schedules”. There you can peruse our schedules. In the upper right corner is an icon entitled “Notify Me”. Click on it to sign up for instant schedule changes. You will receive text messages and/or emails instantly when a change is made to the activity schedules you are following. Boys’ Basketball Wow, this season is off to a quick start. It’s hard to believe that we have already played eight games and after the tournament Dec 26, 27 and 29th we will have played just under half of our regular season games. Following the holiday vacation we start a couple of weeks of some very tough games which will also help season this team for a good run in the playoffs. Hope you can come out and enjoy a game or two.
