Paris-Saclay, a vibrant innovation ecosystem

Disruptive innovation based on five strategic drivers Open innovation is now the dominant model applied by technology companies who typically work with other firms, start-ups, inventors and researchers to generate new ideas and products.

Paris-Saclay offers an exceptional density and variety of potential partners and resources, ranging from the multidisciplinary laboratories of Université Paris-Saclay to industrial players in strategic economic sectors, and from the large shared scientific facilities and infrastructures to the network of incubators and maker spaces.Industrial and scientific partners are developing a wide range of initiatives to promote the local dynamic for innovation and technology transfer.

These include industrial research chairs, programs devoted to entrepreneurship and innovation, collaborative platforms and shared institutes in cutting edge fields such as climate and energy transition, digital systems engineering, carbon free mobility, nanotechnology, etc.

Université Paris-Saclay tto (Technology transfer office) is helping transform public research results into innovation for companies by supporting projects throughout their journey : through development, registering of licenses and patents, and onto start-up creation.

start-ups as key actors of innovation Paris-Saclay forms a vibrant and growing ecosystem for start-ups. In terms of support programs, Université Paris-Saclay has developed a wide range of actions targeting students and researchers with plans to launch their own businesses.These actions are conceived in the Paris-Saclay student entrepreneurship and innovationdepartment (peips). To assist creators in realizing their project with maximum security and visibility, a dedicated “ student entrepreneur ” diploma has been up and running since September 2014.

The geographical proximity of large industrial groups and public research centers fosters the emergence of new project initiators who find in Paris-Saclay an ecosystem conducive to developing their start-ups.

Be part of the Université Paris-saclay community

Université Paris-Saclay, with its role of project architect among all its member institutions, brings unique solutions to the challenges faced by businesses in the local region, who can take advantage of the university’s scientific and technical excellence.

Through its thematic research chairs, it organizes global research partnerships, incorporating appropriate skills. Université Paris-Saclay also supports companies in resolving their challenges by organizing sessions with panels of scientists who can contribute relevant answers. Equally, companies that want to outsource their scientific and technical studies can set up multidisciplinary groups – in conjunction with the University – composed of students and doctoral students, who are able to apply their skills and knowledge to conduct the studies.Open innovation is also a powerful marker of the ecosystem. Acting as an accelerator for business projects, it operates through ambitious collaborative public-private programs in areas such as complex systems (irt Systemx), connected mobility (VeDeCom) and photovoltaics (ipvf). The Systematic Paris Region, Movéo and Optics Valley competitiveness hubs, all heavily involved in the regional cluster, are ideal settings to nurture partnerships between large groups and SMEs which feed the growth of the ecosystem.

Join a powerful network of companies

The Paris-Saclay “Club of the clusters” is a forum where all the companies residing within the territory - companies of all sizes and from all sectors - can come together and exchange ideas. The Club offers the companies the opportunity to express their needs and make their voices heard. They may mobilize around particular projects or give input to the definition and design of pooled services devoted to their businesses or employees. Part of a broader collaborative networking ethos, this network can act as a framework to support and facilitate the installation of new companies and new people.

Benefit from cutting edge research facilities

By locating in Paris-Saclay, you will benefit from access to a remarkable range of major, pioneering research infrastructures, such as :

− Digiscope : a digital macroscope developing complex data visualization techniques, with a fablab devoted to industrial design ;

− Synchrotron Soleil : a particle accelerator welcoming an average of 2, 000 users per year, applications ranging from pharmaceuticals to transport ;

− NanoID : an open platform of research instruments devoted to nanotechnology including providing training in the field of nanomaterials and nanoparticles ;

− Cilex : the interdisciplinary center on extreme light hosting Apollon, the most powerful laser in the world (10 petawatts) ;

− Teratec : the European competence center in high performance simulation and calculation, involving more than 80 industrial and technology companies ;

− ICGex : a high-throughput processing platform for genomics data supported by the Institut Curie.

France’s r&D tax incentives

France has the lowest effective corporate tax rate in the world (among the 10 countries surveyed) for r&D operations. its research tax credit covers 30% of all r&D expenses up to €100 million, and 5% above. Wages for research staff are entirely integrated, plus 50% of r&D operating costs and 75% of investments in r&D operations. sMEs, innovative new companies and start-ups may benefit from an immediate research tax credit rebate.

Fostering entrepreneurship

Public and private incubators and accelerators have built up dynamic teams to support and advise entrepreneurs. There are a number of locally based Business Angels and funding institutions. The entrepreneurial start-up community is led by associations such as Start in Saclay and all the stakeholders work together to launch actions and events to foster the dynamic underway.Paris-Saclay also hosts a network of innovative facilities that make equipment and services available to both entrepreneurs and creative communities. These include forums for company creation, event organization, showrooms, hackerspaces, 3D printers, shared kitchens, etc.

Fueling smart city services

Digital technologies and innovation are becoming drivers for better quality of life with the implementation of new and more efficient urban services for both residents and businesses. With innovations ranging from smart mobility (real time transit information, smart parking systems, shared electric cars and bicycles), to digital services (community data collection, coding platform, interactive map) and energy saving (Paris-Saclay smart grid), by locating in Paris-Saclay companies will derive all the benefits of a high quality territory energized by the innovative and sustainable spirit of its communities. As a privileged industrial demonstrator, Paris-Saclay welcomes all companies with a desire to test out innovations and new products and services.

implementing a circular economy

From a land use point of view, Paris-Saclay is made up of three environmental categories : the urban, the natural and the agricultural. This represents fertile ground for creating partnership between the local stakeholders : farmers, residents, businesses, research institutions and public operators and stakeholders. The territory lends itself to leveraging the tools of industrial ecology, to optimize flows of materials, energy and information. Limiting material requirements, recycling waste, setting up short food supply chains for agricultural produce are all measures that support local production and will enable Paris-Saclay to reap the benefits of a circular economy in the territory.

an ecosystem connected to Paris region

The cluster is covered by two backbone road routes – the regional loop N118 and national highway A10 – which facilitate transport of goods and people for local companies. The existing transit network comprising rer b and c train lines and the dense bus networks with dedicated bus lane infrastructure connect Paris-Saclay to the whole Region.

Line 18 of the Grand Paris Express metro will, by 2024, be the new rail backbone of the Paris-Saclay transport system. With 11 stations, it will connect Paris-Saclay to the whole Paris metropolitan area, its urban and cultural centers, airports and tgv train stations. This new line will transport people from the Paris-Saclay urban campus to Paris-Orly Airport in just 15 minutes.

Quality of life

Paris-Saclay enjoys many assets that make for exceptional quality of life both for residents and employees. Paris-Saclay benefits from Paris Region’s vibrant urban life with its national theatres, two national operas, innumerable cinemas and gastronomic restaurants. The area itself is also richly endowed culturally and historically, not least with the Château de Versailles, and in the field of sports with the National Golf Course and Velodrome in Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines and the French national Rugby Center in Marcoussis. It has outstanding natural and ecological assets, embodied by a wide variety of remarkable landscapes including lush forests, wooded hills, agricultural plateau and rivers. These natural assets support a wide range of activities, among them walking, running and biking.

ryder cup 2018 in 2018, the ryder cup will be held in continental Europe for only the second time in its history. The spectacular National Golf course of saint-Quentin-yvelines will be hosting the biennial match confirming its reputation as one of the best courses in the world for spectators and for the world’s top players alike.
