9:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m. - Serra Center ...more details to come!

Sisters of the Precious Blood Sister Gladys Marie Lowe, CPPS,

is turning 100!! Just a few years ago, Mission San Luis Rey Parish was proud to host the 175th Anniversary of the Sisters of the Precious Blood. In 1913, these vibrant women founded schools in San Bernardino Coun-ty and here at our own Parish. Many of our parishioners and even teachers at our Old Mission Montessori School are gradu-ates of that original school, the San Luis Rey Academy which the sisters staffed. One of those sisters, Sister Gladys Marie Lowe, CPPS, was at San Luis Rey Convent for twenty years, from 1974 to 1994 and earlier than 1974 for one year. Many at OMMS will remember that she founded the Sister Gladys Rummage Sale for Christmas in July. You might also like to know that our Day Care building was named for her a er her many years of service to our children there. Remembering her service to us, Sister says “I thought I was at San Luis Rey forev-er because I got more joy out of my work there than any-where.” Let’s return a li le of that joy to our Sister in Christ! Sister Gladys is celebra ng her 100th birthday on May 30th. The Sisters of Precious Blood are having a special cele-bra on for her on Sunday, June 1st back in Dayton Ohio. And you’re invited to par cipate by sending Sister Gladys a birth-

day card! Here is the address: Sister Gladys Lowe, CPPS 4960 Salem Avenue Dayton, OH 45416

M L B N

Who is Mary? She was called “Miryam” by her parents—a very common name in late BC Pales ne. Few people, other than rela ves and friends, would have given Mary a second thought. At the age of fourteen or fi een she was engaged to be married to Joseph. Again, nothing unusual, as it was the usual age when the daughters of Israel married. Almost noth-ing is known of her life un l, at the age of fi een or sixteen, a most startling event occurred. With a flash of light, the angel Gabriel delivered an astounding message to Mary! She was to be the Mother of the Son of God Himself! Why does Mary return? The answers are not wri en down in a catechism. Rather, they lie in the heart of Mary, which is a heart we should come to understand, and in the needs of the world, which we understand all too well. Appari ons have always had something to do with her heart and the world’s needs. Those Who Saw Her-by Catherine Odell [232.1] presents the stories of the major approved Marian appari ons. What is the exact requirement of belief? How does the Church inves -gate appari ons, and what is the Church’s a tude toward them? This is intelligent and basic research into a fascina ng and o en misunderstood area of Catholic belief.

P V N F T L Recently one of our great volunteers resigned- we are grateful for the years of service Susan Belfield provided to our Library and her many dona ons to our collec on. If you have an hour or two to volunteer on Sunday at the Library- please call Doug Regin 760-231-6161.
