Editorial

As I sit down to write this the weather has turned chilly and we are still a week away from Christmas, although by the time you read it the festivities will be probably be over and many of you will be looking forward to celebrating the arrival of the New Year. It is such a busy time of year with church services, school plays and parties etc. that it can be easy to forget that not everyone can get out and about, nor has a family to celebrate with or possibly can afford to even celebrate at all. So do spare a thought for others at this busy time and maybe pop in to see a neighbour or drop some items in a food bank to help make it a happier time for all.

As you can see there is much on offer to entertain us in the villages over the coming winter months with hopefully something for everyone. The ever popular Firefighters’ breakfast takes place on 3rd March and 2019 also sees the return of the Artisan Fair. Invitations are now open for stall holders.

I do hope your Christmas was a joyful occasion spent with family and friends and I wish you all a very happy and healthy New Year.

Lead theft from churches and what you can do to help prevent it here

There have been a number of serious lead thefts from churches local to us recently. Your help in keeping a watchful eye for suspicious activity is much appreciated. Please note vehicle numbers and alert the police if you see anything suspicious. Thieves often remove a small amount of metal at a time, making repeat visits to clear the site. Alerting police may help them identify and catch criminals. Please call the police if you see vans or workmen around the building outside normal working hours. Please be extra watchful when works are going on, as buildings are attractive to thieves if there are workers or scaffolding on site. Many thanks. Rev’d Shamus Williams.

NEWS FROM YOUR PARISH COUNCIL

The Full PC meets on the second Monday in the in the Cricket Pavilion (Village Hall in winter) at 7.30pm. The meeting is listed every month in the Village Post Office window, on the Notice Board at the Recreation

Ground, and in Odsey near the station. A copy of the full minutes from the Council Meetings may be obtained by contacting the Parish Clerk, Sally Walmesley, Redwood Lodge, South Street, Litlington, Royston SG8 0QR. Telephone 01763 852137 or e-mail [email protected]. Minutes can also be viewed on the Steeple Morden Village Website www.steeplemorden.org and the Village Post Office. Discussion on agenda items from Parish Council

Meeting on Monday December 10th.

Report from County Cllr Sebastian Kindersley:

Cllr Kindersley reported that there was no new information regarding either the A505 junction nor the

scrapyard at Odsey

There would be a council meeting the following day (11th Dec) and there was some debate regarding the fact

that councillors were required to take unpaid leave between Christmas and New Year as a cost saving

measure.

There was also concern that the combined authorities section 151 officer had been dismissed. .

Report from District Cllr Heather Williams

There had been IT issues at South Cambs as there was trouble with the server so Planning were unable to access the system for two weeks

We should be aware that regards the Orchard planning application an ‘exception site’ proposal may come into effect

There will be an additional annual charge for those with an extra green bin

Only an electronic version of the local plan is available. Paper copies can be purchased Comments and observations from parishioners

Sue Norton – A footpath from Litlington to Steeple Morden has been slightly diverted, which was noted not to

be a problem. The trees that needed to be replanting outside a house on Ashwell road need doing now. A

request was made for 40 mph limits to be extended on the Ashwell road up as far as the Farm Shop. It was

recorded that the PC needed to pay £250 for a feasibility study so it was decided that data would be collected

from the new mobile signs before proceeding. This would be considered again in the spring.

A resident affected by the Leylandii tree work reported that he had not been consulted prior to any decision

being made, despite contactors needing access to his private land to carry out the work. Although

acknowledging the height of the trees are at a dangerous level he was concerned that light from the

floodlights would come directly into his windows should the trees be cut down. PC would contact the football

club asking could the lights be changed. There was a deadline for their response, before the next meeting, as

the tree work needed to be done before March. Failing that, it would need to be postponed until next October.

Matters Arising from last meeting

The school did not agree to fund a crossing patrol.

The tree in Russell Close – this is on SCDC land but the council will not come out to cut back a single tree.

However permission is required to cut back any trees.

Financial Report.

This was distributed at the meeting and the budget precept was approved. It was requested that perhaps the

running costs should be separated from capital costs

There was concern that the PC was possibly holding too much in reserve but it was agreed this was prudent

given the likelihood of unexpected costs etc.

Recreation Ground

Planned maintenance work had been delayed due to the weather

Repairs had been done to the play equipment

Tree inspections were on-going

An estimate of £240 had been received to fill the potholes in the car park. This would be done in drier

weather in the spring.

Maintenance

The Craft way footpath was still not cleared of the overhanging trees – the highway inspector was dealing

with this.

Bridleway 46 was blocked by a fallen tree, caused by the removal of the bank.

Footpath 10 had been diverted but it was not showing up on the map and signage needed changing.

Thanks were extended to Ginny Belson for the success of the litter picking scheme, although it was noted it

was disgraceful that there should be so much litter.

CCC proposal to divert footpath 2 was considered to be an improvement.

The Save the Children Committee would like to

thank everyone who supported us in our fund

raising for the Charity during 2018 when a total of

£3,500 (plus £120 of gift aid) was raised – slightly

short of our target of £4,000.

The Lent Lunch is the first event in 2019 and will

be held in March. Full details of date, time and

place will be advertised in January/February. We

look forward to seeing you there.

With our very best wishes to everyone for a Joyous

Christmas and a Happy and Healthy 2019.

We are looking for new members

If you have a few hours spare a week, work from home from time to time, are home-based or just fancy doing something new that is massively rewarding, then please get in touch. The Mordens CFR Group is a small group of local volunteers who are trained by the ambulance service to attend 999 ambulance related calls within an approximate 5 mile radius of the Mordens. Since going live in July last year, we have attended over 120 calls, and in the vast majority of cases, have been the first to arrive on scene. ASHWELL PATIENTS' GROUP APPOINTMENTS NEWS Our surgery (Ashwell and Bassingbourn) is associated with the 10 other medical practices in North Herts and together they are offering additional appointments outside normal opening hours. This means it is possible to see a doctor or a nurse between 6.30pm and 8pm on weekdays, 8am - 4pm on Saturdays and 8am – 12 noon on Sundays. If you want an appointment at one of these times you must book in advance through OUR surgeries in Ashwell and Bassingbourn in the usual way. You cannot simply turn up. Please note that these appointments will be available at Sollershott Surgery, 44 Sollershott East, Letchworth Garden City SG6 3JW and NOT at our own surgeries. When you make one of these bookings you will be asked to consent to your medical records being shared with the “extended service” at Sollershott. This sharing will only be valid for that particular appointment and only lasts for one week. If you do not give this consent, you will be unable to use this service. One of our patients has reported using the service and being extremely pleased at how it worked. Note that even though you may not live in North Herts, as long as you are a patient at either Ashwell or Bassingbourn surgeries, you are entitled to use the scheme. Remember that we do offer additional appointments on Tuesdays from 7.15am and on Thursdays up to 18.50. GOOD NEWS FOR US

We are delighted that our surgeries are fully staffed with well qualified professionals. Sadly this is far from the case elsewhere. We regularly hear of surgeries including local ones with vacancies they find hard to fill. According to a recent survey carried out by The Royal College of General Practitioners almost a third of the doctors surveyed said they would not be working in general practice in 5 years' time with stress and retirement cited as the most common reasons. The alarming conclusion of the College is that more than 350 practices in England alone could face closure as a consequence. Let's make sure we appreciate the good fortune we currently enjoy in our locality! POLITENESS

We are disturbed to hear reports of patients being rude and short-tempered in their dealings with surgery staff. Whilst it is understandable for people to feel frustrated occasionally when they can't be seen as quickly as they would like, the surgery can only operate within the limitations of availability of medical staff. Every effort is made to ensure that patients are dealt with as quickly and as appropriately as possible. So we appeal to our patients to recognise this and to remember to treat others as you would like to be treated yourself. Having said all that, our surgery staff report that the vast majority of our patients are delightful to work with. Let's make that 100%. MISSED APPOINTMENTS

There are still quite a lot of these meaning that doctors' and nurses' time is wasted and that other patients are denied appointments. So please remember to cancel your appointment as early as possible if you realise you can't make it. This is very easy to do. It's the first option that you hear when you ring the surgery. AND FINALLY - GOOD HEALTH TO ONE AND ALL!!! All of us on the Ashwell Patients' Group and staff at our surgeries wish everyone a happy and healthy 2019.

Smarties Pre-School & Out of School Club

Smarties News – September 2014

After 10 year’s involvement with the village Pre-School, Out of School & Holiday Clubs, I have decided to step down from my current position before the start of the new school year in September. I have thoroughly enjoyed helping to transform Smarties from being in a position of financial crisis with low attendee numbers (back in the days when we were based at the Village Hall) to the popular, financially viable and flexible community offering it is today. Smarties now has an enviable reputation in this area, it employs 15 local people and currently supports the needs of well over 100 local families. Given the current size of this organisation, it now presents us with daily administrative demands in terms of HR, payroll, marketing, recruitment, liaising with parents, staff, Committee, the school, County Education Department and Ofsted. This is clearly too wide a remit for one person to juggle. Following my departure, therefore, the Management Committee has wisely decided to divide the various areas of responsibility into 3 roles: General Manager, Head of Pre-School & Head of Out of School/Holiday Club. Head of Pre-School Emma Ward as a qualified & experienced teacher has the right skills to run the Pre -School on a day to day basis with Tracey Tustian deputising. The rest of the Pre-School team – Julie, Nikki, Zoe, Lisa, Rachel, Aleah and Claire, are all EYFS Level3 trained and will support in the care of the younger children. The contact for the preschool remains as: [email protected] Joint Heads of Out of School Zoe Dickman and Georgina Dowley have equal training and experience in Play Work, and both bring positive ideas and practical skills to the Out of School and Holiday Club operations. Their team will be made up of Tracey, Julie, Kathy, Aleah and Lynda. The contact for the out of school remains as [email protected] Administration All matters concerning billing, finances and funding have been managed brilliantly well in recent years by Nanette Hannon, and she is happy to maintain this position in the new organisation. The contact for anything pertaining to finances, bills and funding therefore remains as [email protected] General Management The greatest part of my current role - and that which prevented me from doing what I love – i.e. looking after children - might be viewed as the management functions of a small business (which Smarties now is, albeit we are still a charity by name). It is therefore right that we take on someone new to do this role. Kate Reynolds, our former Chair, will therefore be taking up this position with immediate effect. The general point of contact for any queries to do with Smarties will be Kate, and she can be contacted at [email protected]. The telephone number for Smarties is still 01763 852888. Finally, just a personal word to say that it has been a privilege to play a part in helping Smarties to achieve what it has to date. I have loved caring for your children, and getting to know and to help so many families. I trust that the whole community continues to be mindful of supporting the needs of our young ones. I would also like to wish the Smarties team every success for the future. Thank you Debbie Littlefair
