A BENEFIT OF BROTHERHOOD Helping to keep the Faith Alive

Knights of Columbus The Order is one of the most admired fraternal benefit societies among Catholics and throughout the world, with a reputation second to none. We are men of faith, with a devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary, guided not only by our belief in each other, and in ourselves. We are the Knights of Columbus, believing that a man is defined by his actions as a follower of God, and as a leader in his community, believing that a man is more than simply a man, when he bears the title of “Knight.” Come, be a member of your local Knights of Columbus Council 14722. Call Ray Newcomer, Grand Knight, for more information at 724-859-2841.

The Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

And on the sabbath he began to teach in the synagogue; and many who heard him were astonished, saying, "Where did this man get all this? What is the wisdom given to him? What mighty works are

wrought by his hands! Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary and brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon, and are not his sisters here with us?" And they took offense at him. And Jesus said to them, "A prophet is not without honor, except in his own country, and among his own kin, and in his own house." (Mk 6:2-4)

SACRAMENTAL LIFE

BAPTIZED IN CHRIST

BROOKS JOHN JURAN

Congratulations to his parents, godparents, and grandparents. Please join us in welcoming him into our Parish Family.

SACRAMENTAL SPONSORSHIP We remind all those seeking sponsorship for one of the sacraments, especially Baptism and Confirmation, that TWO of the essential elements for the person are (a) the person must be confirmed; and (b) if married, must be married in the sacrament of the Church. These two are the requirements of the UNIVERSAL Church, and we cannot make exceptions for any reason. So, please, when you are inviting someone to be a godparent, make sure that person fulfills these requirements.

RELIGIOUS FORMATION

Faith Sharing for the Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time In this Sunday’s gospel we hear of Jesus being “AMAZED” about his hometown folks “lack of faith.” As he looks and sees you and I will he be amazed because we live out great faith, or will he see in us as well, a “lack of faith.” Let this gospel be a reminder of our need to pray for growth in Faith. The Faith Formation Office will be open intermittently during the month of July. Leave any message at 412-486-5521 or e-mail [email protected]. One of our team will respond to any message within a few days. Sacraments: Grow In Faith Together

Parents of, and children who just completed Grade 1, be especially attentive to what Jesus says in each Sunday gospel. He speaks to you and His message is for you and our time now. Grade 7 Youth and Parents/Guardians were given or sent important information about the journey of faith in anticipation for celebrating the Sacrament of Confirmation in Springtime 2019. Be attentive to the date when information is due to be returned to Saint Mary’s.

Sunday, July 8, after 9 a.m. Mass, GRADE 8 Catechists meet in Blessed Trinity Academy Room 23. Faith Formation Families of children who attend public schools, use the Celebrating Sunday for Catholic Families book pages 96-97. Pray for your faith in God to keep growing. CATECHISTS and Class Aides will be needed for several groups of young students when the September Faith Formation resumes. All adults volunteering need to have completed the mandated clearances required by the Diocese of Pittsburgh and complete the training prior to September. Contact Rose Stegman at 412-486-5521 if YOU will love to share your excitement of being a friend of Jesus with some of our younger parishioners. The rewards are eternal! SAVE THE DATE, any one of them, if you plan to return as a catechist or wish to be a new volunteer catechist or aide. Miss Rose will like to meet with you for any ONE of these times: 11:00 a.m. till Noon, Tuesday, July 10 or 24, OR Thursday, July 12 or 26, OR 10:15 a.m. Sunday, July 29 or August 12. RSVP to [email protected] or call 412-486-5521 to let us know when you can meet in the school Room 23, enter at the back door.

Home with the Lord Remember Lord and welcome into your Kingdom those who have died and have gone before us marked in the sign of faith. Please remember to pray for the consolation of their loved ones.

A VOCATION VIEW Today’s gospel is so familiar, it hurts! The home town folks couldn’t accept the presence of God in Jesus. After all, they had watched Him grow up. We can easily make the same mistake if we don’t see God present in the ordinary routines of our family. “The Lord be with you” is a statement of fact. Believe it. Live it.

ADULT BIBLE STUDY

Bible Study will resume on Tuesday, September 4, at 1:00 p.m. at the J.A.M. Please plan on joining us. If you have any questions please contact Dori Monahan at 412 -492-9891.

OUR PARISH NEWS

SAFE ENVIRONMENT Keeping God’s Children Protected and Safe To know that we are children of God is to live in complete love, with deep abiding security and the ability to dream, to sing, to create, to laugh, and to play without worry. As we grow older, we face a new reality - we cannot approach all God’s creation with the same trust and confidence. We learn through sometimes hurtful and damaging experiences, that some people reject the ability that God gave them to love and respect other - they ignore God’s call. The Diocese of Pittsburgh’s program, the faithful are guided and educated about the responsibility of how to keep God’s children protected and safe. If you would like to volunteer, please contact Susan Urso, in the Rectory Office, for more information.

Eucharistic Adoration – Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Thursday, August 15, 2018 after the 10:00AM Mass until 6:30PM

St Mary of the Assumption Parish wishes to invite you to join in Eucharistic Adoration in preparation for the implementation of On Mission for The Church Alive! on August 15, 2018 after the 10:00AM mass until 6:30PM. When we are in Adoration we believe that we are not alone. Our faith teaches us that along with our Lord’s Real Presence—Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity—are present the whole host of heaven, all the angels and the saints, and even the souls in purgatory, as true members of the Mystical Body of Christ. Like the saints, Mary is always present when we are in Adoration. As the first and pre-eminent member of the Body of Christ, the Blessed Mother is undoubtedly present wherever her Son is—wherever there is Jesus, there is Mary. Near our Eucharistic Lord, her ardent love and fervent faith can inspire and guide our hearts whenever we come into His Presence. The more we give ourselves to her the more she is able to form us into loving adorers and humble consolers of His Most Sacred Heart.

If you are able to commit to 30 minutes in Adoration, please sign up for a time slot on the sheet located at the back of the Church. Thank you.

“Where there is Christ Jesus, there is the Catholic Church.” Saint Ignatius of Antioch

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Last week’s Treasure mentioned the “Nuns of the Battlefield,” religious sisters from several communities who served as nurses in the Civil War. Florence Nightingale had only instituted female nurses a decade before in the Crimean War, so the idea of women tending to wounded soldiers was extraordinary. The medical and sanitary conditions on the battlefields were appalling, and the sisters were nearly all teachers. Few had any medical training beyond what they had learned as youngsters in the family. Anti-Catholic prejudice was so deeply entrenched in America that sisters could not wear their habits in public. These sisters were the first, and people on both the Union and Confederate sides soon began to marvel at their bravery, efficiency, and respect for Protestant soldiers. More than six hundred sisters from twenty-one communities went to war, serving in wretched conditions. They were tough and single-minded, efficient and fearless. After the war, sisters could appear in public everywhere in the reunited nation, and often received the praise and gratitude of grateful soldiers and family members on behalf of their sister nurses. An outdoor monument to the “Nuns of the Battlefield” stands in Washington at M Street and Rhode Island Avenue. The inscription reads: “They comforted the dying, nursed the wounded, carried hope to the imprisoned, gave in His name a drink of water to the thirsty.” OBSTACLES The prophet Ezekiel, Saint Paul, and the Lord Jesus share something in common in today’s scripture readings. They all experience obstacles to their ministry. Ezekiel is summoned to prophesy to the Israelites, who are “[h]ard of face and obstinate of heart” (Ezekiel 2:4). Saint Paul recounts how he has been given a “thorn in the flesh” (2 Corinthians 12:7). The Lord Jesus is unable to perform many signs in his native place. The Gospel tells us that “[he] was amazed at their lack of faith” (Mark 6:6). We too sometimes encounter obstacles as we travel along the journey of faith. So often we experience weakness on this journey. Let the words of the Lord to Saint Paul encourage us today: “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness” (2 Corinthians 12:9).
