My dear Parishioners,
As you will recall, in last week’s column, I discussed the
situation we American Catholics find ourselves in as a result
of the presidential election. The divisions we experience
within our country are affecting every sector of society and,
as members of a Church called to bring about reconciliation,
to be a healing agent for wounded individuals or groups, we
know that in some way we must fulfil our calling in the here
and now. But how?
Last week I had mentioned that I would discuss this with the
members of our Pastoral Council which met this past Tues-
day evening. Realistically, our parish, no matter how you
look at it, is made up of minorities; overwhelmingly black
and brown adults and children. Both groups are impacted
by the aftermath of the election. In particular, the mean-
spiritedness that has been unleashed across the country by
the often volatile rhetoric of the campaign. We had a good
sharing of feelings and ideas about what may be lurking
“out there.” There was particular concern about our chil-
dren and young people and about how they are or aren’t
coping with it. Racism and all the other poisonous serpents
it spawns is evident everywhere, and we want to learn about
how it is affecting the lives of parishioners, especially the
young, so that we can name the evil and counter it.
Following the advice of our Pastoral Council, I am calling
you to another Community Meeting following the 10:00
o’clock Mass on Sunday, December 4th—the Second Sun-
day of Advent. Several qualified parishioners will facilitate
the meeting. The Agenda is being prepared and we will
announce it to you in advance. Meanwhile, let us all pray
over and reflect on the “signs of the times,” trusting in the
guidance of the Holy Spirit and the presence of the One
whose Kingdom is not of this world to bolster our faith.
Fr. Jerome, C.P.

do.
