An Act of Spiritual Communion

My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament.

I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul.

Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart.

I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You.

Never permit me to be separated from You.

Amen.

We extend the hand of friendship. We're honored to share this day with you as we worship God. We hope that the celebration of the Holy Eucharist and other events posted on our website and

Facebook will touch your heart and that you experience a sense of peace. We also hope you'll continue in the knowledge that St. Mary/St. Benedict parish is a home away from home.

Deacon Randy Smith is available for all your needs and concerns. You are welcome to contact him directly: 330 323 5904.

THE EASTER OCTAVE Easter me lasts fi y days: seven weeks of seven days (seven equals Biblical perfec on) plus one day: perfec on plus! Like an eight-day Jewish wedding, or a child who can’t bear to let go of Christmas, birthdays, and school vaca on, the Church celebrates the Easter Octave: “the marriage of heaven and earth,” as the Vigil calls Jesus’ res-urrec on; our new members’ bap smal rebirth; our re-newal of bap smal vows; our hearts’ “divine vaca-

on” (La n vacare, “to be empty”), newfound me and space for love of God and neighbor. Make home an Easter garden! Adorn the dining table with a pillar candle (your “paschal candle”), a bowl full of water (ideally, from the parish’s bap smal font), a vase of flowers or bowl of sprou ng grain with Easter eggs. Even non-singers can handle the three-fold Gospel Alleluia! Let that be your grace before meals, perhaps with a prayer recalling Em-maus (Luke 24:13-35): “Be known to us, Risen Lord Jesus, as you were to the first disciples, in your word, in the breaking of bread, and in everyone we meet.”

SEEDS OF FAITH There is a brevity, a certain terseness, in the scripture readings for Easter Sunday. Peter’s speech in Acts is built of direct, pointed sentences. Paul’s le ers are based on straigh orward creed-like statements. Even the Gospel story only briefly recounts what will turn out to be one of the most remarkable events in human history—the resur-rec on of Jesus from the dead. Adver sing agents call these encapsulated points of informa on “bullet points.” Scripture scholars call them kerygmata, or “kernels” of our faith. Actually, “kernels” or “seeds” are good terms for these statements, since throughout the Easter sea-son, we will hear in the Acts of the Apostles, the Le ers of Paul, and the Gospel accounts of the days following the Resurrec on exactly how these kerygmata began to flower, how they con nued to grow through the life of the early church. May these Easter “seeds” of faith serve a similar purpose for us, too, so that the life of the Risen Christ will flourish in us and through our witness in the coming days.

Gomez of Los Angeles, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, has issued the follow-ing regarding Coronavirus (COVID-19): With the worldwide outbreak of the corona-virus, we are confronted once more with the fragility of our lives, and again we are remind-ed of our common humanity; that the peoples of this world are our brothers and sisters, that we are all one family under God. God does not abandon us, he goes with us even now in this me of trial and tes ng... Now is the me to intensify our prayers and sacrifices for the love of God and the love of our neighbor. Let us draw closer to one anoth-er in our love for him, and rediscover the things that truly ma er in our lives. United with our Holy Father Pope Francis, let us pray in solidarity for our brothers and sis-ters here and around the world who are sick... In this me of need, I invite all the faithful to seek together the maternal intercession of Our Lady of Guadalupe: Holy Virgin of Guadalupe, Queen of the Angels and Mother of the Americas. We fly to you today as your beloved children. We ask you to intercede for us with your Son, as you did at the wedding in Cana. Pray for us, loving Mother, and gain for our na on and world, and for all our families and loved ones, the protec on of your holy angels, that we may be spared the worst of this illness. For those already afflicted, we ask you to obtain the grace of healing and deliverance. Hear the cries of those who are vulnerable and fearful, wipe away their tears and help them to trust. In this me of trial and tes ng, teach all of us in the Church to love one an-other and to be pa ent and kind. Help us to bring the peace of Jesus to our land and to our hearts. We come to you with confidence, knowing that you truly are our compassionate mother, health of the sick and cause of our joy. CATECHISM OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH

I The Historical and Transcendent Event Chapter Three III: GOD’S SPIRIT & WORD IN THE TIME OF THE PROMISES Expecta on of the Messiah and his Spirit 713)The Messiah’s character-is cs are reveled above all in he “Servant Songs.” Theses songs proclaim the meaning of Jesus’ Passion and show how he will pour out the Holy Spirit to give life tot the many: not as an outsider, but by embracing our “form as slave.” Taking our death upon himself, he can communicate to us his own Spirit of life. 714) This is why Christ inau-gurates the proclama on of the Good News by making the following passage from Isaiah: “The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to bring good dings to the afflicted; he has sent me to bind up the broken hearted, to proclaim liberty to the cap ves , and the opening of the prison to the those who are bound; to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor…” 715) The prophe c texts that directly concern the sending of the Holy Spirit are oracles by which God speaks to the heart of his people in the language of the promise , with the accent of “love and fidelity.” St. Peter will pro-claim their fulfillment on the morning of Pentecost...

President Trump's National Day of Prayer Proclamation for all Americans Affected by the Coro-navirus Pandemic BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA A PROCLAMATION In our mes of greatest need, Americans have always turned to prayer to help guide us through trials and periods of un-certainty. As we con nue to face the unique challenges posed by the corona-virus pandemic, ...we must not cease ask-ing God for added wisdom, comfort, and strength, and we must especially pray for those who have suffered harm or who have lost loved ones. I ask you to join me in a day of prayer for all people who have been affected by the coronavirus pan-demic and to pray for God's healing hand to be placed on the people of our Na on. ... Let us pray that all those affected by the virus will feel the presence of our Lord's protec on and love during this

me. With God's help, we will overcome this threat. On Friday, I declared a na onal emergen-cy and took other bold ac ons to help deploy the full power of the Federal Gov-ernment to assist with efforts to combat the coronavirus pandemic. I now encour-age all Americans to pray for those on the front lines of the response, especially our Na on's outstanding medical profession-als and public health officials who are working relessly to protect all of us from the coronavirus and treat pa ents who are infected; all of our courageous first responders, Na onal Guard, and dedicat-ed individuals who are working to ensure the health and safety of our communi es; and our Federal, State, and local leaders... As one Na on under God, we are greater than the hardships we face, and through prayer and acts of compassion and love, we will rise to this challenge and emerge stronger and more united than ever before. May God bless each of you, and may God bless the United States of America. NATIONAL DAY OF PRAYER, MAY 7, 2020 Pray for your leaders. Ask God to grant them wisdom to act with integrity. Consider praying for our Federal Gov-ernment, State Government, Gover-nor, Execu ve Leaders, Legisla ve Lead-ers, Judicial Leaders, Local Government, Military, Media, Medical Leaders, Busi-ness, Educa on, Church, and Family.
