It seems that comingoutof lockdown is a lotharder thangoing in. Thereareongoingdebatesaboutwhatisgoingtoopenupwhenandhow.Thentherearethedebatesaboutfacemasks,cleaning,glovesandhowmuchsocialdistancingisneeded.

Inthemidstofallthiswe'reallasindividualsandascommunitiesnavigatingourownwaythroughtheprocess.WeareslowlyrebuildingtheconJidencetogoout,withoutbeingtooafraidof theconsequences. Forthosewhohaveneededshielding this process is more complex and the decisions become ever moredifJicult.Aschurcheswe'reinthesamepositionaseveryoneelse,tryingtoweighuptheprosandconsofactionsanddecideonthebestcourseanddecision. Assoon as it is safe to do so, and we have permission to act then I hope thatchurches in the beneJice will once again be open for people to go into asindividuals for private prayer and time and space to sit and think. Therewillalmostcertainlybeaprocesstothis,sopleasebepatientasweworkouthowtoproceed.Atthetimeofwriting(lateMay)wedonotknowwhenwewillbeabletoreopen,andcertainlydonotknowwhenpublicworshipwillrecommence,orwhatformitwilltake.

Thequestionis,aswecomeoutof lockdownwhathavewelearntfromthistime,andhowwillour livesbeaffected forgood,asopposed to just increasingfearandworry,whichisaneasyresponsetothesituation.

I've seen so many more families out for walks and bike rides; no doubtcountlesschildrenhavelearnthowtoridetheirbikesinthistime.Beingtoldwecan only go out for exercise once a day,meant thatwe feltwe needed to. Asopposedtohavingthefreedomtogooutwheneverwecould! Alsomanyfewerhave been commutingwhich has led tomore time for families to be together,which has had its challenges no doubt, but also its positives. In cities thebirdsong has been more audible, in the countryside our roads have becomeeasier to cycle down. The reduction in Jlying has dramatically reduced thegreenhousegasemissionsandairqualityinbuiltupareashasimproved.

Many of us have developed computer skills we never thought we'd need,Jilming and editing are two of mine. We've learnt how to Zoom (otherprogrammesare available!) andwhenZoomdecided to implement anupgradeone Saturdaynight in theUSA churches in theUK and elsewhere struggled, asonepersonputit'ThechurchbrokeZoom!'

Yetatthesametimecountlessindividualshavelosttheirlives,funeralshavebeenchallenging,familyparties,baptisms,weddingshavebeenputonhold.Thecosthasbeenimmense,andwillcontinuetobe.

Wehavetoweighupbothsides. Noneofuswouldhavewantedthis,orthestress that ithasputonpeople,communitiesandnations. Wewouldnothavechosen togo into lockdown. But aswe comeout, in themidstof that sorrow,maybethereisonethingthatwe'vegainedfromthistimethatwecancontinuetoappreciateordo. Itwillbedifferentforeachandeveryoneofus,butmaybethat will help the transition. FromtheRegistersWeextendourcondolencestothefamilyandfriendsofDorothyAnnSEALBYwhopassedawayonMonday27\]AprilatCastleHouseNursingHomeaged86years. Aservice tookplaceatMendipCrematoriumonMonday18\]May.

WheathillBeneficeRememberingVEDayJane's reJlection on VE Day 75 years on included some of the impacts of lossduringthesecondworldwar,inparticularthedeathsoftwoRAFservicemen.

She said: 'The VE Day rejoicingwas not for all. Therewere thosewhogrievedfortheiryoungmen(andsomewomen)killedduringthewarandthosewho did not knowwhat had happened, orwho continually hopedthattheirlovedonewouldbefound.

LocalexamplesofthemwouldbeaPilotOfficerChristopherHebelerwhodidnotreturnfromabombingraid12April1940.HeisnotshownontheWarMemorialinBartonStDavidas,itissaid,hismothernevergaveuphopeofhisreturn.

He is however remembered inBarton St David Church on thesmalltableneartheAltar

There is aWarGrave inBarton churchyard forErnest StanleyBailey who died whilst still under training 5 days before theWW1armistice.

BartonWarMemorialhasalistingforWW2ofPercyCharlesDuddwhowas lostatseawhenhissubmarine failedtoreturnfrom patrol in the Mediterranean 6 December 1940. He isremembered on the Plymouth Naval Memorial on PlymouthHoe.

ThentherewasCalebDickinsonwho,likesomanyothers,wentmissingovertheNorthSeaandwasneverrecoveredsohasnograve.'

Kingweston does not have any WW2graves, but has the Memorial to CalebDickinsoninthemainaisle.

Other people who served have theirnameslistedintheporchofthechurch.

Theteachersandstaffveryquicklyrespondedtothenewdemandsandgoogleclassroomwasupandrunningwithin a very short time. We have ensured all pupils have access tocomputers, internetorhomelearningpackstobeabletocontinuetheirschooljourneywhilstinlockdown.

The children have been entertained byMrs Carter-Rice andMiss Botterill,completewithbagpipes,whichbroughtourbearhunttopictolife.Thankyoutoeveryonewho joined in the funanddisplayed their teddies.Thechildrenhavealsoenthusiasticallytakenpartinartcompetitions. Oneofthemwasrecreatingfamousartists’pictures,whichcanbeviewedonourwebsiteandtheotherwasacompetition,inspiredbySueCostain,whohasdisplayedthepupil’sworkaroundourcommunityeachweek.

Meanwhile schoolhas still beenopeneveryday forourvulnerable andkeyworkerchildren. Althoughthenumbershaverangedfromonetotenwehavebeenkeptbusy. Thepupilshaveworkedhardat theiracademicsubjectseachmorning and spent the afternoons growing vegetables, making bird boxes,cooking,makingdensandagooddailydoseofexercise.

Alongside Jinding newways tomeet in fellowship onlinethey are crafting thousandsof newessential itemseveryweek for thenationaleffort, Jindingways toprotectkeyworkersandreassuring themostvulnerablegroupswithinsociety.

TakingAcfonThese members are working around the clock, safely in isolation but also inpartnership. Local requests from front line NHS staff in hospitals are beingheeded,aswellascallsforassistancefromstaffincommunitycaresettings.Carehomes, hospices and mental health facilities are just some of the sites beingsupportedasourfaithisputintoaction. Mothers’Union’sscrubsandscrubsbagshelpensurethatstaffcanremoveallclothingandkeepitsafelyinaseparatebag.Thisreducestheriskofinfectioninthe home, protecting key worker’s families and households. Care in thecommunitysuchasthisisanessentialcomponentofourmovement. HilaryCastle,DiocesanPresidentofYorkexplains further: “Luckily,becauseweusecraftinmanyofourcommunityprojectsthroughouttheyear,mostofourmembers have sewingmachines and equipment…My branch alone hasmadeover200items,everythingweproduceiswashedatover60degreesandsealedinbags.”

UnprecedentedScaleThe scale of the operation is inspirational. Across Yorkshire, well over athousand items for frontline workers have been produced. Jean Thurman,Diocesan President for Leeds outlines the process: “In the diocese of Leeds athousanditemshavebeenmadeanddistributed.Wehavebeenworkingwiththelocal community and through partnerships to ensure what we’re making anddoingisgettingtowhereitisneeded,quicklyandsafely.” It isnot just frontlinestaffwithinthecommunitythatwearesupporting. Liz Jones, Diocesan VicePresidentofMorgannwgArchdeaconryhasalreadymadeanddonated14pairsofhearts (some knitted, some sewn) to the Royal GlamorganHospital, Llantrisant.Meanwhile other members have been providing hearts for Prince CharlesHospitalinMerthyrTydJil.SusanRivers,DiocesanPresidentforLlandaffsaid: “Visiting restrictions during COVID-19 mean that many patients and theirfamilies are separated at theworst possible time, but hospital staff are trying toease thepainbygiving each familya special keepsake.Matchingpairsof knittedhearts are given to the patient and their family, so that people can feel moreconnectedwiththeirrelatives.” Theproductionoftheseheartsisgivinghopeandspreadingloveinhospitals,care homes and hospices, helping residents, patients and their families getthroughthesedifJicult times.Variousotherbranchesacross theUKandIrelandareworkingonsimilarprojects. Local requests from front line NHS staff in hospitals are beingheeded,aswellascallsforassistancefromstaffincommunitycaresettings.Carehomes, hospices and mental health facilities are just some of the sites beingsupportedasourfaithisputintoaction. Mothers’Union’sscrubsandscrubsbagshelpensurethatstaffcanremoveallclothingandkeepitsafelyinaseparatebag.Thisreducestheriskofinfectioninthe home, protecting key worker’s families and households. Care in thecommunitysuchasthisisanessentialcomponentofourmovement. HilaryCastle,DiocesanPresidentofYorkexplains further: “Luckily,becauseweusecraftinmanyofourcommunityprojectsthroughouttheyear,mostofourmembers have sewingmachines and equipment…My branch alone hasmadeover200items,everythingweproduceiswashedatover60degreesandsealedinbags.”

UnprecedentedScaleThe scale of the operation is inspirational. Across Yorkshire, well over athousand items for frontline workers have been produced. Jean Thurman,Diocesan President for Leeds outlines the process: “In the diocese of Leeds athousanditemshavebeenmadeanddistributed.Wehavebeenworkingwiththelocal community and through partnerships to ensure what we’re making anddoingisgettingtowhereitisneeded,quicklyandsafely.” It isnot just frontlinestaffwithinthecommunitythatwearesupporting. Inprisonstoo, thepowerof theirpartnerships isproving invaluable.RosieStiven,Diocesan President of Mothers' Union in Dorset and Wiltshire describes howtheirnetworksaidincreatinganeffectiveresponse: “We’vealwayshadastrongconnectionwithourlocalprisonssowhenthecallcamethattheywantedtodotheirbittosupportthecommunitywejustknewwehadtorespond.Wearemobilizingourlocalbranchestosourcesewingmachinessothatprisonerscanmakescrubs for frontlineworkersand feelactivelyengaged insupportingvitalcommunityworkatthisdifmiculttime.” Asourorganisationadapts,wecontinuetoevolveourexistingpartnershipsto overcome the obstacles that COVID-19 represents. By making sure that wecontinuetoaddresscurrentneeds,ourvariousgroupsareabletochampionthemostvulnerableinthecommunitiestheyareapartof.

ShowingextraLovingCareInLlandaff,membershavebeenshowinga littleextra lovingcarebyproducingknitted hearts for NHS Hospital Coronavirus wards. Liz Jones, Diocesan VicePresidentofMorgannwgArchdeaconryhasalreadymadeanddonated14pairsofhearts (some knitted, some sewn) to the Royal GlamorganHospital, Llantrisant.Meanwhile other members have been providing hearts for Prince CharlesHospitalinMerthyrTydJil.SusanRivers,DiocesanPresidentforLlandaffsaid: “Visiting restrictions during COVID-19 mean that many patients and theirfamilies are separated at theworst possible time, but hospital staff are trying toease thepainbygiving each familya special keepsake.Matchingpairsof knittedhearts are given to the patient and their family, so that people can feel moreconnectedwiththeirrelatives.” Theproductionoftheseheartsisgivinghopeandspreadingloveinhospitals,care homes and hospices, helping residents, patients and their families getthroughthesedifJicult times.Variousotherbranchesacross theUKandIrelandareworkingonsimilarprojects. Two areas have been marked out to allow the existing grasses and bee friendlywildJlowerstogrow,acouplerecordedaretheOxEyeDaisiesandacreepingplantwithblue/violetJlowerscalledAjuga.

David Allison has kindly made two bee hotels, suitable forMason Bees. Ofthese, thesmallerbeehotelhasshownsomeactivityand theBiggeronehasbeenevenmoreactive.

TheMasonBee femalebuilds individualnests inhollowstems,andalso in themortarofoldbuildings.Each“cell”islinedwithmudandpollenwhereasingleeggislaidineachofthecells.ThelarvaehibernateoverwinterandhatchlateinMarch.Astheyfeedonlyonpollenandnectar,suchasappleandchestnuttreesJloweringatthattime,theyaregreatpollinatorssobringusmoreJlowers,fruitandvegetables.

Coronavirushasput aholdonworkingwith the schoolor Scouts fornowbuthopefully,childrenwillbeabletovisitatsometimeinthefuturetolookatwhatishappening. ThewildlifefriendlyshrubsthatJlowersuccessivelyhavesurvivedthewinterandaredoingalright. SwiftnestswillbesitedonthetowerwithhelpfromJuliaManning.

PlotgateCSACommunityFarmandourchangingfmesThePlotgategardensarefullofhopethismonth–bedsbeingpreparedandsown,manySummervegetableplantsputtingtheirrootsdown,andgroupsofushoeing,mulching, planting out, watering, weeding, and supporting everything aswe lookforward toabundantnewseasonvegetables. Withhelp fromvolunteermemberswe’rekeepingupwithourcarefullythought-outplantogrowasmuchaswecanthisyear – especially as suddenly there are many more veg-shares to provide everyweek.

EveryMonday and Friday the barn is a hive of activity as barrowloads, boxesand bags of freshly harvested produce areweighed and shared out into the veg-boxescoveringeveryavailablesurface.AswellastheFriday4–7pmcollectionfromtheBartonInnskittlealley,fornow theMonday collectionpoint isataback-up location, thegarageofamemberhouseholdinGlastonbury,onaself-servicebasis.andonSaturdaymornings the named boxes are on atrolley just inside the door ofTheBridge in Langport,open as afood shop,to be picked up easily. And, ofcourse,wecontinuecheerfulandsocially-distantdeliveriestodoorsteps!

PlotgateCommunityFarm isco-operativelyrunby itsmembers,growingseasonalvegetablesona9-acresite inBartonStDavid.TheFarm’smemberscancollect,orhavedelivered,aweeklyorfortnightlyshareoftheproduce,eachboxcontainingatleast8differenttypesofvegetable.Thereareevents,activitiesandopportunitiesaswellasfreshfoodallthroughtheyear.

EveryFridayfrom4-7pmwehavefreshly-pickedvegetablestocollectfromtheBartonInn.fyou’dlikeashareoftheharvest–wealsodeliveronMondayeveningsandSaturdaymornings.
