2018 St. Cyril & Methodius Advent Giving Projects

“Listen and attend with the ear of your heart.” -St. Benedict

During the upcoming days of Advent, when decorating and gift buying squeeze their way into our busy days, the Church reminds us to prepare also our hearts; to step back from the commotion and the noise and to quiet ourselves and to listen. In that quiet we can hear, as Christ hears, the needs of the poor, the vulnerable, the weak and the lonely in our midst. Also like Christ, we can reach out to them in generosity and love. The Advent Giving Projects give us the chance to do this together as a parish.

This year’s projects include purchasing a gift or gift card from the Giving Tree, supplying food, warm clothing or other basic necessities, or making a monetary donation. Whether we ourselves have a lot or a little, there are many ways to give, making it possible for each of us to help in some way to care for these individuals and the agencies that serve them.

Please prayerfully consider how you can give generously to one or more of the projects described below. If you have questions about any of the 2018 Advent Giving Projects, please contact:

Erin Rybicki, Christian Service Coordinator, (586) 530-0547, or Sandi Brady, Parish Office, (586) 726-6911

Monetary Donations If you would like to support one of the following projects with a monetary gift, please place your donation in a 2018 Advent Projects envelope, indicate the project(s) you would like to help, and place it in the Collection Basket. You may also drop off your envelope in the Parish Office by December 25. Envelopes are available in the Church Vestibule.

Africa Projects/Bishop Minde: Bishop Minde has asked for our help with two projects. First, at Holy Family Parish in Kagongwa, our sister parish, we will be helping with the construction costs for the St. Martha Homecraft Program. Our Advent collection in 2017 for this project enabled the start-up of this program for training the young women of the parish in the skills they need to maintain a home and raise children; the project has grown and is in need of its own building. The second project, also in Kagongwa, is to complete the construction of Ss. Cyril & Methodius English Medium Primary School. (Please make your check payable to “Ss. Cyril & Methodius Slovak Catholic Church” and in the memo line indicate “Africa Projects”. Note: Donations to international projects are not tax-deductible, per IRS regulations.) Abigayle Ministries: Lives are changed at Abigayle Ministries, a loving home for homeless pregnant women located here in Sterling Heights. Women come to Abigayle without resources, without support, often without hope. While living there, they learn to keep a part-time job, go to school, and learn to care for their baby and themselves. Most of all, they experience the love of God through prayer time, Bible study, the staff and each other. Your donation will help with the daily operating costs of this life transforming ministry. (Please make your check payable to “Ss. Cyril & Methodius Slovak Catholic Church” and in the memo line indicate “Abigayle Ministries”.) Seminarians Sponsorship/ Sacred Heart Major Seminary: A number of young men from our diocese, including St. Cyril parishioners Charles Giroux and Ryan Walters, have generously responded to the Lord’s call to the priesthood and are in formation at Sacred Heart Major Seminary. Please consider supporting the seminarians with a monetary gift to help meet the cost of tuition. This is a great way to help them financially and to invest in the future of the Church here in southeast Michigan. (Please make your check payable to “Ss. Cyril & Methodius Slovak Catholic Church” and in the memo line indicate “Sacred Heart Seminary”.) Slovak Seminarian Sponsorship: Since its foundation, our parish has been blessed with generous pastoral care of priests from Slovakia. In this 100th Anniversary year, this project gives us an opportunity to show our appreciation to the Slovak Bishops for their continued support of Ss. Cyril and Methodius and to help build the Church in Slovakia. Currently 32 men are in priestly formation. You can help one of these men with the cost of tuition with a gift of $300. If you would like to sponsor a seminarian, please contact Sandi Brady in the parish office. You will be given your seminarian’s name and a Christmas ornament with his photo to place in your home as a reminder to pray for him daily. (Please make your check payable to “Ss. Cyril & Methodius Slovak Catholic Church” and in the memo line indicate “Slovak Seminarian”. Note: Donations to international projects are not tax-deductible, per IRS regulations.)

Christ the King Sunday * November 25, 2018 Page 5 Giving Tree Donations: Bring the joy of receiving a Christmas gift to a

local child or adult by taking a tag from the giving tree and purchasing the requested gift. The Giving Tree is decorated with hundreds of tags for the members of needy families and disadvantaged men, women, children

and babies. These individuals are being assisted by St. Dominic’s Outreach Center, Mary’s Mantle, Macomb County Community Mental Health, and our parish. Please take a tag from the tree and return it,

attached to the wrapped gift, to the Parish Office by December 9. If your tag has a gift card request, please put the tag and gift card in an envelope and place it in the Collection Basket or drop it off in the Parish Office.

Material Goods Collections Sacred Heart Food Pantry Collection: During Advent, food donations will be collected for the hungry families served by the St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry located at Sacred Heart Church in Imlay City. In order to support these brothers and sisters in our local area, we will be collecting non-perishable food items such as rice, beans, cereal, pasta and canned goods. Please place your donations in the appropriate box located in the vestibule coatroom by December 16. Mary’s Children Family Center Collection: The mission of Mary’s Children is to bring God’s love to adults suffering from traumatic brain injury. The center cares for each of the patients with respect and encouragement to reach his full potential. In order to help the center meet the daily needs of these individuals, we are collecting Lysol wipes, paper towels, toilet tissue and individual servings of applesauce. Please place your donations in the appropriate box located in the vestibule coatroom by December 16. Warm Clothing Collection: To supplement our ongoing collection of clothing for the homeless and low-income individuals served by the Missionaries of Charity at St. Leo’s in Detroit, we are collecting warm winter clothing. New and gently used warm clothing in adult sizes, especially coats, boots, hats, gloves, scarves and thermal tops and bottoms for men, are needed. Please place your donations in the appropriate box located in the vestibule coatroom by December 16.

Annual Cookie Walk * Saturday & Sunday, December 15 & 16

There are only 3 weeks until our Cookie Walk!

Have extra time now? Please, bake and freeze your cookies.

Tips for Freezing Baked Cookies

* All cookies should be frozen individually after they've cooled completely, meaning they should be placed on a baking

sheet, not touching, until frozen solid. (They can be frozen like this in layers separated by parchment, wax, or freezer

paper). * All cookies should be stored in airtight containers (shallow is best so they don't get crushed) or bags.

* Freeze bar cookies in whole or large slabs, then just thaw and cut when serving.

* Iced or decorated cookies should be stored in layers, with parchment, wax, or freezer paper between the layers so that the decorations stay intact. If you can, however, freeze the baked cookies and ice them as needed.

Breakfast with Saint Nicholas * December 8 * Saint Nicholas is coming to Ss. Cyril’s and Methodius! Establish or continue a wonderful family Christmas tradition by bringing your children to visit Saint Nicholas. This is a wonderful alternative to a mall visit with Santa. This special saint can truly symbolize the season for your children. Saint Nicholas will be visiting our parish this year during the “Breakfast with Saint Nicholas” event on Saturday, December 8, from 10:00AM – 12:00PM. In a time when it can be so easy to lose the true meaning of the season in the rush of our shopping and traveling, take a break and come to the parish hall to introduce your children to this great saint known for his generosity and sincerity. Children can say hello to Saint Nicholas, receive a little surprise and have their photograph taken with him by a professional photographer as a memento of their visit. You will be able to download all photos from a website (more information will be given at the time of the photo taken). All families are welcome. Cost for the breakfast will be $10 per 17 yrs. and up and $8 per 16 yrs. to 3 yrs. (2 yrs. and under are free) or buy a table of 8 for $60. Tickets will be available after Sunday Holy Masses (while they last) as follows: November 18 (10:00AM, 1:30PM), November 25 (9:30AM, 11:30AM & 1:30PM) and December 2 (9:30AM, 11:30AM & 1:30PM). Tickets are also available in the Parish Office until Friday, November 30 (while they last).

If you have any questions, please contact: Eman Louis, (248) 797-6502 or Andrea Davis, (586) 405-4666

KNOW ~ LOVE ~ SERVE ~ MARY 2018 St. Catherine of Alexandria, Egypt, (+305), was a teenage princess. Although beautiful, well bred, intelligent and wealthy, she decided early that she would remain a virgin, unless she could find someone to match or exceed her own qualities. It seems that the Blessed Virgin Mary, even early in Church history, was busy. She sent a certain hermit to tell Catherine that her Divine Son was the Spouse whom she desired. He alone possessed all of the requirements she demanded, and even more. Upon gazing on a holy card of both Jesus and Mary, she fell in love with the Face of Christ. Nothing else any longer gave her joy. In a dream, Catherine accompanied the hermit to a sanctuary and was met there by angels. Immediately, she fell before them, covering her face, but one said: “Rise, dear sister Catherine, for the King of glory delights to honor thee.” Rising and following them, she came into the presence of the “beautiful beyond description” Queen of Heaven, who was surrounded by angels and saints. The Queen welcomed her and led her to her Divine Son. Unhappily, He turned from her, with the words: “She is not fair and beautiful enough for Me.” At those words that broke her heart, Catherine awoke, weeping bitterly. However, a very happy ending occurs once she is baptized. The Blessed Virgin then again presents her to Jesus who smiles at her, plights His troth to her, and puts a ring on her finger. When she awakens, the ring is still there. She not only refuses to marry the pagan Emperor, but she converts his wife, a high official and the soldiers of the guard. For this, she was fastened to a huge spiked wheel, but her bonds were miraculously loosened and the wheel itself broke, its spikes flying off and killing some onlookers. She was then beheaded. Her Feast Day is: November 25.

ADORATION 101 * Uniting with the Beloved

I’m going to step aside this week and hand the reins over to St. Francis de Sales. The past couple of weeks I’ve been re-reading his masterpiece, “Introduction to the Devout Life” and was floored at the beauty of his description on Holy Communion and how to join in it (Pt. 2, Ch. 14). It was just too good to pass up so I’ll just relate his words for mine. Think about them. Let them sink in. You just don’t hear people talk this way today: “So far I have said nothing concerning the Sun of all spiritual exercises, even the most holy, sacred and Sovereign Sacrifice and Sacrament of the Eucharist,—the very center point of our Christian religion, the heart of all devotion, the soul of piety;—that

Ineffable Mystery which embraces the whole depth of Divine Love, by which God, giving Himself really to us, conveys all His Graces and favors to men with royal magnificence. Prayer made in union with this Divine Sacrifice has untold power; through which, indeed, the soul overflows with heavenly grace, and leaning on her Beloved, becomes so filled with spiritual sweetness and perfume, that we may ask in the words of the Canticles: “Who is this that cometh out of the wilderness like pillars of smoke, perfumed with myrrh and frankincense, with all powders of the merchant? (Song of Solomon 3:6)” Strive then to your utmost to be present every day at this holy Celebration, in order that with the priest you may offer the Sacrifice of your Redeemer on behalf of yourself and the whole Church to God the Father. Saint Chrysostom says that the Angels crowd around it in adoration, and if we are found together with them, united in one intention, we cannot but be most favourably influenced by such society. Moreover, all the heavenly choirs of the Church triumphant, as well as those of the Church militant, are joined to our Dear Lord in this divine act, so that with Him, in Him, and by Him, they may win the favor of God the Father, and obtain His Mercy for us. How great the blessing to my soul to contribute its share towards the attainment of so gracious a gift!” Thus, the first half of the chapter. The second half, and perhaps the even more beautiful half, will follow next week. – Paul A. Ray
