YEAR OF FAITH March 17, 2013 ~ Fifth Sunday of Lent ~ Year C

Spiritual Reflection on Sunday’s Readings

Families of Nazareth Movement USA, Communion of Life with Christ through Mary

“Let the one among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.” John 8: 7

The Hidden Pedestal In each person there is an astounding tendency to bask in God’s gifts. We take advantage of the love that Christ shows us in

order to bask in the happy feeling that we are loved rather than have the entire truth about God’s love always before us – the truth that Yes, I am loved, but only because of my misery. Jesus, who sees me in the truth, or as I really am, died for me on the Cross. If it were not for His Redemptive Sacrifice, I would have no chance to be saved.

Instead of striving to live according to this truth, I seek an untrue relationship with God. My relationship with God is untrue in the sense that I erase from my heart why I am redeemed and why I am loved in such an exceptional way: God loves me because He is true to Himself – He is purest Love. To the degree that I immerse myself in the type of thinking that is separated from the truth about Redemption, I am convinced more and more that the only reason God loves me is because I try, perhaps awkwardly, to be good and to fulfill His will. I believe that God loves me only because I am worthy of His love. By thinking in this way, it is as if I want to tell God, God, you are on the highest pedestal. I am only human, but I also have something. I prefer not to call it a pedestal. Nevertheless, whatever it is, it elevates me…

Barriers in the realm of the unconscious that close us off from the action of grace are the most dangerous. All defense mechanisms operate in this area. Here we are basically defenseless against temptations. After all, since we cannot perceive temptations in our unconscious, we cannot defend ourselves against them. If we consider the prodigal son’s father as a symbol for God, then, by imitating the attitude of the older brother and desiring to be aright before God, we unconsciously do not want to need God’s forgiveness. Here, then, is where the unconscious resistance to grace is born in us, and we ask ourselves, Why does God have to forgive me? I prefer to be perfect. This trap consists of the fact that our desire to be perfect causes us to think that we are self-sufficient. In order to feel like everything is okay, I am even ready to perform an act of heroism. In doing so, I build a barrier to grace because I deny the truth about which St. John the Apostle speaks in his letter, “If we say, ‘We are without sin,’ we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us” (1 Jn 1:8). Thus, I suppress this truth because it is pleasant to be perfect. This spiritual pleasantness functions only in those who set spiritual goals. However, when this pleasantness emerges, they imperceptibly deny the truth about Redemption. Consequently, their pangs of conscience deaden, and they rationalize all forms of unfaithfulness.

I begin to warp my conscience further because, when I commit evil, I persuade myself that no evil took place. I make innumerable arguments in order to justify myself and my actions. In time, my distorted conscience “washes the dirty laundry” so cleverly that it is almost impossible to catch. In effect, I do not perceive how strongly I oppose grace…

God, the Merciful Father who loves me as a sinner, slowly disappears from my life. In His place appears a false image of God who loves me because of my deeds and merits. I trudge further along the path of the older brother – the path that closes me to the truth about Redemption. The moment will come, however, when the Lord God will tear this growing falsehood asunder and place me on the foundation of truth. This fact, which awakens me, shows that I live as if God does not exist. In the face of my hidden resistance to grace, God can permit humiliating temptations to come my way. Or, He may shake me through someone, open my eyes, and show me that I am not as perfect as I think I am. The strength of my reaction will measure the height of the hidden pedestal from which He, who always fights for my salvation, has cast me down.

S.C. Biela, The Two Pillars, pp.21-25

References from the Catechism of the Catholic Church 588 Jesus scandalized the Pharisees by eating with tax collectors and sinners as familiarly as with themselves.364 Against those

among them "who trusted in themselves that they were righteous and despised others", Jesus affirmed: "I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance."365 He went further by proclaiming before the Pharisees that, since sin is universal, those who pretend not to need salvation are blind to themselves.366

Questions for Reflection 1. In looking at the events of my life, how does my past experience of God’s love compare with my perception of His love for me

today? 2. In my daily situations, what seems to be an obstacle for me in desiring God’s forgiveness? Prayer after Sharing Thank you, God, for allowing me to see the truth about my weaknesses and how it calls upon the abyss of your merciful Love.

CATHOLICISM A Journey to the Heart of the Faith

You are invited to join us on Monday nights to come together for fellowship and to learn more about the Catholic Faith.

This DVD series was four years in the making, and is the long-awaited evangelical work of Fr. Robert Barron, professor of theology at St. Mary of the Lake Seminary. In addition to rock solid scholarship and theology, the series is filled with beautiful cinematography that illustrates the theological points.

Fr. Barron reminds us that ours is a Church of science, art and imagery. Fr. Barron tells the message of Jesus and gives us a compelling modern example of the Gospels in practice. Fr. Barron is a true scholar and is a powerful advocate for Christianity and Catholicism.

BIBLE STUDY FOR PEOPLE ON THE GO

March 16th & 17th, 2013 - Year C 5th Sunday of Lent

FOCUS: To enter into the mystery of forgiveness

Today’s Readings: Isaiah 43:16-21,Psalm 126:1-6,

Philippians 3:8-14, John 8:1-11

QUESTION OF THE WEEK: When am I tempted the most to judge other people?

REFLECTIONS ON TODAY’S READINGS Today’s readings celebrate the new life God grants through Christ. In today’s first reading we hear the prophet Isaiah proclamation of Israel’s coming restoration to its homeland. The Lord will lead the people in a new exodus across the desert. Just as once God opened the way through the Red Sea, God will now prepare the way in the wilderness. As in the first Exodus, water will spring forth as a sign of God’s revelation. The Exodus has been an experience of faith and to this day marks the divine act of God’s saving love and redemption for Jews. Our psalm is known as a Psalm of accent. This particular psalm expresses joy and gratitude for being delivered from Babylonian captors. In our second reading from Philippians, Paul states that all his personal achievements are worthless compared to the new life to be gained in Christ. Our reading from the Gospel shows the reconciling action of Jesus on two accounts: a woman brought to him in adultery and the scribes and Pharisees who come intending to trap him. Jesus first offers the women acceptance and mercy, and then calls her to conversion. Without a harsh word, Jesus offers the scribes and Pharisees a chance to see themselves in a new light, to turn to God, and to be reconciled

QUESTIONS FOR REFLECTION: 1. How would I describe my spiritual journey in terms

of my past, present, and future?

2. How does Jesus open a new door for the woman and the Pharisees?

3. What can I do these last weeks of Lent to draw closer to God?

CONFIRMATION 2 RETREAT

Over 80 teens from St. Kilian spent March 1-3 at the Irvine Ranch Outdoor Education Center on Confirmation Retreat. The group was lucky enough to enjoy a visit from Bishop Vann who met the teens, played a game and even sat in for a song or two. One of our own leaders, Siobhan Daley, prayed over Bishop Vann and he blessed our group in return.

An awesome retreat with the theme: "By Your Side”.
