CHRIST THE KING CHURCH TOLEDO, OHIO (Member of the St. Agnes Deanery) May 17, 2020
PARISH NEWS Dear Parishioners, The feelings of doubt, anxiety, and fear can cripple anyone. In fact at times those feelings can feel like chains around our necks, weighing us down. In German there is a word “angst” which means dread. What are you feeling given our current situation? There are probably as many ways of dealing with fear and anxiety as there are people.
I read about a Lutheran minister who is pastor of a inner-city church in Detroit. The neighborhood has a high crime rate, and many experience fears on a daily basis.
The pastor said he was always amazed by a certain member of the church who seemed to have no fear about coming to meetings and services at night… even though she had no car and would have to walk home through the dark and frightening streets. As the minister was locking up his church one night after a prayer service at which this woman had been present, he happened to see her walking from the church down the street toward her apartment. As she walked, she was holding her hand as if some unseen companion were walking with her and holding it. As she walked, she was humming a familiar spiritual: “Precious Lord, take my hand, lead me on. Hold my hand, lest I fall. Take my hand, precious Lord, lead me home.”
The minister stopped the woman and asked her if she was afraid, “Yes,” she said. “It’s dark and this is a bad neighborhood. I don’t let it steal my peace though.” The minister then said, “How do you overcome your fear?”
The woman looked up at him and said, “Well, Reverend, I would be a lot more scared if I had to walk home in the dark alone. But then — I realize that I am not walk-ing home alone. The Precious Lord takes my hand and gets me home. That’s why I don’t allow myself to fall into fear — the Lord has my hand, I shall not fall.”
As we begin to re-open, re-group, and re-enter aspects of our lives which have been put on hold, remember this wise woman’s advice. “Precious Lord, take my hand, lead me on!” Have a great week!
Love, Fr. Bill

Act of Spiritual Communion
My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Blessed Sacrament. I love You above all things,
and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You
sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You.
Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

PARISH NEWS Parish Nurse Tip of the Week
Improving Your Sleep Patterns
We have many routines built into our lifestyle. Getting yourself into a routine of going to bed at the same time and getting up at the same time — even on the weekends — will help to soothe and calm your body into the habit of regular sleep. Avoid being distracted by checking your social media; watching an action/adventure movie; or going over in your mind all the work that you didn’t get done. When it’s bedtime, just go to bed! This pattern will help your circadian rhythm or body’s 24-hour time clock work for your benefit. Over time, you will naturally fall asleep and wake up when you are supposed to.
By setting up a routine that you can do every night before bed will prepare your mind for sleep. Make sure you have time to unwind before your bedtime ritual be-gins. Follow the same series of steps that lead you from being awake to being asleep every night. For example: lock the doors; put your PJ’s on; wash your face; brush your teeth; pull the blinds; fluff your pillows; and turn on gentle music or read a few pages of a soothing book. This will allow your mind to relax as you drift among pleasant thoughts. Developing a bedtime routine signals to your body that sleep is coming and helps your body and mind relax so that sleep comes easily.

Novena to the Holy Spirit As we near the conclusion of the Easter Season, our minds and hearts turn toward the risen and ascended Lord who sent the Holy Spirit upon His disci-ples. His promise to be with us always gives us hope and strength to persevere during these unsettling times. May the Holy Spirit empower us to face courageously whatever may come and cause us to rejoice in our blessings and even in our sufferings, “knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.” (Romans 5: 3-5)
Most Reverend Daniel E. Thomas, our bishop, encourages all of us to join him with renewed vigor in praying our Diocesan Novena to the Holy Spirit in thanksgiving for the gradual restoration of public liturgies on the great Solemnity of Pentecost. The novena begins on Friday, May 22, and concludes on Saturday, May 30. The links to the novena, in both English and Spanish, may be found on the Diocesan website at www.toledodiocese.org/page/easter#_pentecost.
Need-based Scholarships Awarded for Students to Attend a Private School
Deadline Extended to May 29
The Northwest Ohio Scholarship Fund (NOSF) has an-nounced that they have awarded a total of 620 scholarships including 108 new scholarships for the 2019-2020 school year. The eligibility scale for these scholarships is based on the National School Lunch Program and all of the families receiving the scholarship are at the 270% poverty level or below.
NOSF provides privately funded scholarships to students from low-income families in grades K-8 to attend a private school such as Christ the King School, or for homeschool expenses.
Students can receive up to $1,500 per year for tuition or $500 for homeschool expenses. Families must reside in Lu-cas, Wood, or other select counties in our Diocese, and are required to pay a minimum of $500 towards their tuition.
NOSF has been awarding scholarships since 1999. Deb Gehring, whose family has been in the program since 2011 and has three children using the scholarship this year, said “if not for NOSF my children would not have been able to attend Christ the King School in Toledo.” (pictured below)
For more information and to apply online, visit the NOSF website at www.nosf.org. Once given an award, families can renew their children’s scholarship each year if they meet the income eligibility requirements and can also add sib-lings. For more information, contact Ann Riddle, NOSF Executive Director, at 419-720-7048.
