Letter from Revd Canon Sue Oliver

Recently I have had to fill in a whole load of paperwork in preparation for an hour-long Ministerial Development Review interview with Bishop Graham. I will have had it by the time this is published. As part of it I have had to identify some personal and some ministry priorities. I thought this month I might share a little of what I think the priorities are. 1. For me, pray, pray, pray. Being responsible for all the five churches and all the Readers

in the Diocese is an impossible job for me, or any one individual. But it is not impossible for God. So, if my prayer life is kept in good order, and I minister in His name and am empowered by the Holy Spirit, by grace I shall continue to serve you.

2. For Fairfield and Belbroughton, to begin trying to employ a Children and Family Worker to build links with the schools and the churches. There’s a Trust Fund whose money can only be spent there…..but if it is successful perhaps………..??

3. Work with Year 6 pupils in our local schools if they are interested in being confirmed. I’m doing quite a number of baptisms, which is lovely, and Baptism is the very beginning of the Christian Journey. By the time children are 10/11, they are old enough to know if what they want to do is commit to those promises the godparents and parents made for them when they were tiny.

4. Is something I shall write about another time.. 5. Is relating to Readers so not relevant here 6. Running a Bishop’s Certificate Course with Andy Hewines (and perhaps others),

starting in the Autumn. Bishop’s Certificate Courses last for 30 weeks, so 10 sessions of an hour and a half actual teaching and learning each school term; and in the following September a Bishop does actually present you with a signed Certificate. I’ve led quite a few such courses, and all have been both really helpful to those attending as it deepens their faith, but it has also been fun. It’s good to be together in a group, perhaps starting out as virtual strangers but by the end really knowing people well. I would hope that people from across the Holy Cross South Group, (that’s Fairfield, Belbroughton, Blakedown, Broome and Churchill) and perhaps from elsewhere would want to join in. It doesn’t matter if you haven’t been confirmed or even baptised as doing the first term would count as Confirmation preparation and I am planning on holding a Confirmation Service in late 2019 or early 2020 for those school children and some adults. And if you haven’t been baptised as a baby the Bishop can baptise and Confirm you. And it is very likely that if you do this course, surrounded by people who either are or will become your friends, perhaps you will find yourself wanting to do more for God. Just by way of example, in my first group of 5 churches I led such a course in 2007. Of the 12 that did it, one was ordained and another considered it, one became a Reader, one became a Trustee of a Charity, another a Churchwarden, one a Deanery Secretary, another a Lay Chair of the Deanery and two did Pastoral ALM Training Courses. Now, there’s no guarantee that will happen again but with God, as I said at the beginning, all things are possible. If you think you might be interested and want to know more, or just to come along, come and have a cup of coffee or tea with me on Saturday July 20th at 10.30 at the Rectory. I hope I need to make lots of cake!

Letter from the Bishop of Worcester

All Together as Kingdom People

Saturday 28 September, Worcester Cathedral

It is now over five years since our Kingdom People Vision was unanimously and enthusiastically adopted by Diocesan Synod in 2013.

The Church is God’s gift to the world, which is called to be an effective sign of God’s Kingdom. God’s mission is to reconcile the whole creation in Jesus and

establish the reign of God. Jesus’s first words in his ministry were ‘Repent and believe the good news: the Kingdom of God is at hand’.

As Christians, we are called to be Kingdom people: those who both hear and proclaim that message, becoming agents of the transformation of the world according to God’s loving purposes in Jesus’ Churches should be places where people seek to live out their vocation to be Kingdom people and where the Kingdom values of love, compassion, justice and freedom are embodied and proclaimed.

On Saturday 28 September, we will once again come together in Worcester to worship, share resources and be inspired in this vision and our ‘Kingdom People’ journey. You may remember our last such day in 2015: it was a great occasion, with people gathering from right across the Diocese.

Highlights this year include the presence of the Bishop of Liverpool, Paul Bayes, (formerly one of our honorary canons) and a wide range of workshops - from which you’ll come away with new ideas to reinvigorate your worship, connect your faith with life beyond church walls, or help make running your parish easier. There will be sessions suitable for families to attend together as well as practical prayer stations and a chance to be involved in a ‘Kingdom Arts’ project.

The day will also include a ministry of hospitality with breakfast and afternoon tea provided free of charge, courtesy of a gift from a charitable trust. You’ll just need to bring lunch (or take the opportunity to head into Worcester in the break to get something). I’m hoping very many people from across the Diocese will come and join us to worship, learn, share and eat together.

Please do look out for more information on the diocesan mailing and website. To enable us to plan workshops etc, we’d be very grateful if people could book in through the Eventbrite website as early as possible and definitely before Saturday 14 September.

Bishop calls for churches to garden for mental health

The Church of England's lead bishop on healthcare issues, James Newcome, has backed experts' calls for churches to promote gardening for mental wellbeing.

Lambeth Palace today hosted a conference exploring the links between mental health and gardening, which saw a fresh call for churches to use their green space to offer ‘therapeutic gardening’.

Green Health Live 2, which brought together chaplains, public health experts and healthcare professionals, showcased innovative work being done by parishes to provide therapeutic gardening spaces – and encouraged more churches to work with local mental health charities and medical professionals to do the same.

Last year a survey of clergy showed that mental health issues were at the top of the list of problems they were faced within their parishes. Research makes clear that gardening can help to relieve the effects of depression, loneliness and a range of mental health issues, but many people, particularly in towns and cities, do not have gardens of their own. Churches often have space where a garden can be created to offer basic gardening experience, access to nature and companionship.

The conference, organised by the Church of England’s Environmental Working Group, was opened by Professor Jim McManus, who is President of the Guild of Health and St Raphael, Director of Public Health for Hertfordshire and Vice-President of the Association of Directors of Public Health. Other speakers included the Bishop of Carlisle, James Newcome, the Church of England’s lead bishop on healthcare issues; Professor Harriet Gross of the University of Lincoln and author of The Psychology of Gardening; and former politician and now prison chaplain the Revd Jonathan Aitken.

The Bishop of Carlisle, James Newcome, said: “Churches are places where people can find healing and community, so it is no surprise – but it is absolutely wonderful – that growing numbers of parishes are providing spaces for therapeutic gardens. We know that gardening is a powerful form of therapy, and when done with others it tackles loneliness and social isolation. It’s my hope that churches will embrace this opportunity to make a valuable and vital contribution to supporting mental health in our communities.”

Professor Jim McManus said: “The evidence that gardening has physical and men tal health benefits – from relaxation and destressing to coping with anxiety – and physical strength benefits is unquestionable. Churches have enormous potential to help people build resilience and cope with problems through gardening, reaching out to people who may find no other venue for support. This is a huge untapped asset for the public’s health, and by championing this, Green Health Live is leading the way through practical examples and providing scientific and theological rationale.”

Professor Harriet Gross said: “Gardening is good for mental health; it reduces stress and can raise your mood. Gardens also allow reflection or thinking of nothing. Convincing evidence shows the benefits of being purposeful outdoors in nature, which is engaging but mentally undemanding. Creating gardens with others in shared spaces, like churches, brings personal and social benefits too, as Green Health Live will show. These gardens provide a safe place to go and to take part in activities, where people feel valued as ind ividuals.”

The Revd Jonathan Aitken said: “Therapeutic gardening has a valuable role to play in the rehabilitation of offenders and as a calming and caring influence on prison communities. I know this from personal experience. During my prison sentence 20 years ago I did regular work in the prison flowerbeds and in its market gardens. We prisoners were pleased to have something useful to do which beautified and benefitted our surroundings. I noticed that working in the garden was particularly helpful to those prisoners suffering from mental health problems. The work calmed them down and lifted their spirits.”

At BCFB we love to report on the generosity of all our friends and supporters, and it is so pleasing to see the much needed items arriving in the Warehouse and Distribution Centres daily. So, a big thank you to you all for your ongoing commitment, campaigns and every bit of fundraising you do! A lot of time and hard work goes into the running of BCFB, and all of it would be impossible without the dedication of our volunteers. Our most recent recruits are two young men (and their Teacher), here for one day per week on Work Experience from Pens Meadow school. They are keen to learn and have quickly got to grips with checking and sorting lots of the donated items. Next on the agenda is stock rotation and order picking, all under the supportive and watchful eye of our Warehouse Manager and experienced staff. They are really enjoying their time with us and gaining some valuable life skills. Well done to them! As many of you will be aware, we are entered into the Best Churchyard

Competition, so can we all do our best to keep it tidy – we can expect a visit any tiem

over the summer, unannounced!

Secondly, the refuse bins are clearly marked, but even so volunteers have to sort through the green bin on a regular basis to

ensure that only recyclable items are in it; ie the same items that you recycle at home.

The year seems to whip round fast. This month we will host the Worcestershire and District Northern Branch skittles evening in our church hall. The skittles alley has been made by local ringers within the branch and this will be its first outing. If all goes well, it will be stored at the hall and available for hire from the hall. Previous skittle evenings have been well attended and great fun so we look forward to it. It is also the time to plan our barbecue held anytime from June to August – Belbroughton will have a Tuesday night free of bells. Further afield, I have just been on a bellringing weekend to north Devon where the Saturday was spent touring bell towers on a motor bike. On this morning the poppies bloom in a Belbroughton garden and we remember the 3 men from Belbroughton who died in France in the days following D-Day.

Trooper Allan Withers 7929768, "A" Sqn. 23rd Hussars, Royal Armoured Corps who died on 15 August 1944 Age 24. Son of Henry and Annie J. Withers, of Belbroughton, Worcestershire. St. Charles De Percy War Cemetery.

Brigadier Walter Glencairn-Campbell Royal Norfolk Regiment O B E. Son of Charles John Francis Campbell and of Zoe Florence Campbell (nee Bradshaw); husband of Charmian Cecil de Vere Glencairn-Campbell (nee Brinton), of Kensington, London. Died aged 55 on 21st October 1944 and is buried in the Churchyard extension.

Private Frederick Ernest Raybould 4036817 2nd Bn. The Glasgow Highlanders, Highland Light Infantry (City of Glasgow Regiment). Son of George and Gweneviere Raybould; husband of Betty Raybould, of Belbroughton, Worcestershire. He died aged 25 on 30th October 1944. Mierlo War Cemetery, Netherlands.

There are also several names on the war memorial where it is impossible at the moment to identify where and when they died.

On this, the 75th Anniversary of D-Day, WE WILL REMEMBER THEM ALL

Near the wall of the old Churchyard is the grave of the once Archdeacon of Zanzibar, Harry Goodyear. So how did a lad who was born in Belbroughton on 24th August 1857 end up being the Archdeacon of Zanzibar?

Harry was the son of the parish clerk and attended the village school under ‘Gaffer’ Best. He was such a good pupil that he became a pupil teacher moving to Saltley Training College between 1876-78. Whilst there he excelled at both cricket and football but it was the latter which brought him fame. He was chosen to represent the Birmingham Football Association against London twice and Sheffield once. He was described as the best and most popular forward in the district.

He became a school teacher in Alloa where he introduced football into the area. But his desire was to become a missionary. He studied hard and became a Deacon after being described as one of the best students the college had ever had. In July 1883 he sailed for Zanzibar on the East African coast. Life was hard both physically and emotionally as Harry worked hard to improve the lives of the people under his care. He helped them build schools and churches as well as looking after their well-being. He sent a letter back home asking for footballs to be sent so that he could teach the boys the game. In 1889 he was made Archdeacon for Zanzibar but soon found himself working on his own as friends died and others moved away. Harry continued to work with dedication and enthusiasm. Unfortunately the workload and the climate became too much for him. On 24th June 1889 Harry died of a fever.

Kitchen Corner

Vegetable garden risotto This English summertime vegetarian risotto was found on the BBC Good Food website. It's from Hairy Bikers' Best of British Ingredients — serves 4 250g/10oz broad beans 50g/2oz butter 3 tbsp olive oil 1 tbsp chopped fresh mint leaves 1 onion, finely chopped 2 garlic cloves, crushed 3-4 sprigs fresh thyme 1 bunch asparagus, trimmed and cut into short lengths 100g/3½oz fresh runner beans, de-stringed and cut into long thin strips 100g/3½oz feta cheese, drained and crumbled into small pieces Sea salt flakes and freshly ground black pepper Parmesan shavings, to serve (optional) Method — Fill a saucepan with water and bring to the boil. Add the broad beans and return to the boil. Cook for one minute then drain in a colander under running water until cold. Remove the beans from their skins and set aside. Mix the mint with two tablespoons of the olive oil and set aside. — Melt 25g/1oz of the butter with the remaining oil in a large non-stick saucepan and fry the onion and garlic for five minutes until softened, but not coloured. Stir in the thyme, lemon zest, bay leaf and risotto rice and cook for a few seconds more until the rice is glistening. — Pour the wine into the pan and boil over a medium heat until the liquid has reduced by half. Slowly start adding the stock, a ladleful at a time, stirring well between each addition. Simmer for 2-3 minutes or until the liquid has almost all been absorbed before adding more. Cook for 15 minutes or until the rice is tender. —Meanwhile, fill a medium saucepan with water and bring to the boil. Cook the runner beans for three minutes, or until tender. Drain in a colander then return to the pan and toss with a small knob of the remaining butter and plenty of ground black pepper. — Remove the thyme and lemon zest from the rice and discard. Stir in the broad beans, peas and asparagus with the remaining stock and cook for three minutes until tender, stirring regularly. Remove from the heat and stir in the feta. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Cover with a lid and set aside. — Add the remaining butter to the risotto and stir. Spoon into four deep plates and tap gently on the work surface to spread the risotto slightly. Spoon over the minted olive oil. Top with the runner beans and shavings of fresh parmesan and serve immediately.

Who is the Gold winner in the 10 to 13 age category of the BBC2 ‘500 Words 2019’ Competion.

In its ninth year, the story-writing competition for children aged between 5 and 13 attracted over 110,000 entries. Each and every one of this year’s entries was read by a fantastic team of 5000 volunteer teachers and librarians from around the UK, before being whittled down to the Top 50 finalists by The Reading Agency.

Esme was presented with her award by actor and writer David Walliams, who read Esme’s story, titled ‘Why Did the Chicken…’

BELBROUGHTON HISTORY SOCIETY – FROM THE ARCHIVES

A look through the newspapers of 1969 reveals something of life in Belbroughton 50 years ago. Some things change, while others never do! Birmingham Daily Post - 9 April 1969 Councils may try to stop Reservoir proposals: The Minister of Housing and Local Government may be asked to bring in a restriction to prevent Birmingham Corporation extending its proposed reservoir at Romsley near Clent to provide more water for the city … The Romsley and Belbroughton Parish Councils are worried that Birmingham may try to extend the reservoir and it is feared that this would increase the risk of flooding in an emergency in the middle of Belbroughton. The Belbroughton Ward member, Coun. J. C. Beech, said … “I gather that the dam is to be made of earth and that there is little chance of it bursting, but the people of Belbroughton are still worried…. Flooding in Belbroughton would be terrible if anything ever happened to make the dam burst.” Of course, as we know, the reservoir never went ahead. Birmingham Daily Post - 14 May 1969 Telephone switch to STD: Telephone subscribers at Belbroughton will be put on STD on 29 May. But call boxes in the area will not be put onto STD and people telephoning from kiosks will still have to dial “0” for the operator. For those too young to remember, once upon a time all calls had to be connected by the operator; then you could dial local calls; and finally STD (Standard Trunk Dialling) allowed you to dial long distance (ie trunk) calls from your own phone. Birmingham Daily Post - 4 July 1969 Road Safety Quiz a Close Fight: Only seven-and-a-half points separated the three finalists at the end of last night’s primary schools Road Safety Quiz. The competition, sponsored by the Bromsgrove Rural Council, was won by Silvermead County Primary School, Wythall, with 67 points … Belbroughton Church of England School was third with 59 ½ points. Birmingham Daily Post - 16 July 1969 New Hazard for Golfers: Belbroughton Parish Council, near Stourbridge, is considering whether to make a new by-law to stop golfers from practising at Fairfield Recreation Ground on Sundays. Coun. Gordon Jones said last night that so far there had been no report of an accident, but it would be serious if someone was hit. The Inn is situated in the centre of the picturesque village of Belbroughton. Floral Art Competition – Open to all New competition open to residents, non-residents and community groups; Saturday 20th July. Your challenge is to create a work of art using flowers, the theme is Super Heroes. CLASSES

1. Entry fee per work art of art, £1.00 for Adults & Community Groups classes and Free for Children’s classes.

2. The maximum size of the work of art is 1 sq. metres. The maximum height should not exceed 1 metre.

3. Entries must be placed on display at St. Mark’s church by 11.00am on Saturday 20th July, the church will be open from 9.30am.

4. All exhibits must be the unaided work of the competitor. 5. An exhibit is composed of natural plant material with or without accessories. 6. Natural plant material to predominate in all classes. 7. The use of aerosols, paint and other sprays, glue guns and other electrical equipment in the

Church is prohibited, 8. Exhibits cannot be removed before the close of the show. 9. Exhibits and competitors’ property will be at the entire risk of the competitor. 10. The decision of the Judge is final. 11. Gold & Silver Star Certificates will be award to deserving works of art for each category 12. If it is deemed necessary by the Judge, these rules can change without notice; 13. Even though this is a competition, it is a bit of fun.

Kerbside collection update Bromsgrove District Council are pleased to announce that along with other Worcestershire local authorities they can now collect coloured (non-black) plant pots for recycling. FAIRFIELD WI

Fairfield WI meets every second Wednesday in the month at Fairfield Village Hall at 7.30 pm. Do come along you will be very welcome.

Our June meeting is always a garden theme and this year we visited Sandal Lodge Flower Farm at Hanbury Wharf, run by Anna Brian.

It had to be (weather wise) the worst night of the week. It absolutely poured with rain and it wasn’t that warm. However, the hardy lot that we are arrived at the farm in our own cars for 7 pm. There were about 20 of us and we were shown into Anna's workshop which was thankfully warm and dry. Introductions were made and Anna suggested that those who wanted to and willing to brave a short walk in the rain could go to the poly tunnel to see what flowers she used to make her floral creations.

It was lovely to see all the native British flowers there and Anna explained the growing cycle they used at the farm, we passed the annual growing section and caught a glimpse of the perennial garden which looked gorgeous and it was such a pity that the dreadful weather didn’t allow us to wander round these gardens.

Back in the workshop Anna explained about the work she does for all occasions and the trends now for weddings etc., She gave us a brief history of her love for British flowers and her qualifications gained at Pershore College and Academy of Floral Art. She said her passion for flowers started at a very young age and has stayed with her ever since.

She did some flower demonstrations for us and gave us some very useful tips on how to prolong flowers at home and what flowers to use in different arrangements. She uses British flowers whenever she can and as much as possible.

Towards the end of the demonstration her husband joined us with their gorgeous 5 month old baby boy who was very alert and enjoyed looking around to see what was going on.

We had refreshments of tea/coffee and delicious Victoria sponge or Lemon cake made by Anna's husband.

It was a lovely evening and well worth braving the atrocious weather for.

Carol thanked Anna and said how much we had all enjoyed it and would definitely visit again.

Our next meeting is on July 10th at 7.30 pm in Fairfield Village Hall. It is an Open Evening. The speaker is Ellie Somme and the subject is 'Another Man's Shoes' Norwegian Resistance During World War II. One Man's Story.

Do come along and bring a friend or relative it should be a good evening.

CLENT MOTHERS’ UNION

Our June meeting opened, as usual, with our time of worship. Following this, our branch leader, Anne Harris, gave out several notices for members.

Details of the excellent fundraising at the May Coffee Morning.

Annual outing on 4th July. We meet at Clent Parish Hall at 2pm, planning to leave at 2.15pm to travel to Bodenham Arboretum for tea. Cost £10.

On Wednesday 10th July, the Diocesan AGM will be at St Saviour’s at 7.30pm. There will be a Bring and Share supper.

On Thursday 18th July at 2.30pm, also at St Saviour’s, we are invited by Hagley Branch to a cream tea. There will be stalls, etc.

Anne then handed over to our own Wendy Pettitt, to give her talk about the MU Founder, Mary Sumner.

Mary was the daughter of Thomas Haywood and was 3 years old when the family moved to Colwall, near Malvern. She met her future husband, George Sumner, son of the Bishop of Winchester, in her teens and they married at Colwall when Mary was 19. In 1851, George was appointed Rector of Old Alresford, Hampshire and it was there that Mary held the first Mothers’ Union meetings in 1876, following the birth of her first grandchild.

She was a very shy and timid person, but with her husbands, support, she was able to realize the dream she had of helping mothers and families. This was mid-19th Century, when poverty and ignorance were the norm for the poor, with no help at all. From the first tentative steps of holding meetings in her home for the mothers in her village, Mary’s idea blossomed to become the incredible organization we know as the Mothers’ Union. 140 years later, there are branches throughout the world, with millions of members still helping families in ways Mary could never have imagined.

Mary’s secret was simply to follow Jesus’ teaching - show love and respect to everyone; all children are precious; live a life of service to others; welcome others as we would welcome God; to love is to make a conscious decision to ‘invest’ in another person’s life, and we must accept love before we can share it. Love is God’s gift to us.

Mary Sumner may have been a shy and nervous woman, but what a legacy she left the world.

Anne thanked Wendy for telling us Mary’s story and presented her with a plant. As already stated, our next meeting will be our outing. There will be no meeting in August and we wish everyone safe and happy holidays

CALLING ALL CLENT VILLAGERS I have set up a social group for anyone living in or associated with Clent. We currently meet once a month with guest speakers and days out. The ethos of the club is friendship, adventure and shared experience, it will offer the opportunity to meet friends and neighbours with days out planned. Whilst our Village is a fantastic place to live, if you do not have transport it can be quite isolating. I have thought for a long time that a social club would be a great way forward. All trips will pick up and drop off in Clent – a door to door service being their appeal! I love organising things and would love you to come and join me. CLENT WI

After our meeting on June 13th we may find ourselves getting used to the finer things in life. Not only did we welcome Lady Ginny Davis, an entertaining speaker and performer but we imbibed drinks of a fizzy nature and ate cake. It’s not every day that we celebrate our 90th birthday. Clent WI is now 90 years old and still going strong - currently we have around 45 members and our doors are always open to welcome new members and guests. We will be dabbling in silver during the July 11th meeting along with Penny Wheat who will share with us The Craft of the Silversmith. Members may possibly be tempted to start some silver work of their own or perhaps Penny will have tempting examples of her own work for sale. Clent WI members like to sparkle. The Craft Group were also into shiny silver objects in June when, under Carol’s guidance, we transformed our old CDs into greetings cards. Yes we did. Having recently seen, in a Cornish Craft Centre, CDs turned into attractive clocks could this be a possible future venture for us?

July 16th sees the Craft Group taking themselves off to visit the Carpet Museum in Kidderminster, and then for lunch. A visit sure to inspire them with new creative ideas. The summer trip in August is another treat to look forward to and if you would like to join us but are not a member please get in touch with our secretary, Heather Carter to check availability of places. We travel by coach from Webbs in Hagley to Boscot House in Oxfordshire. The trip costs £10 for National Trust members or £20 for those who are not. Our gardens, at time of writing, are blooming beautifully. Hopefully this trend will continue all summer and having carefully nurtured our vegetables and fruit we will have plenty to put on display on Saturday 7th September, the day of CLENT FLOWER SHOW. Start preparing now, sorting out photographs- check this years theme; craft items & paintings that you’ve been working on. Lead us to good, inexpensive restaurants where the wine is included in the price of the meal. Give us the wisdom to tip correctly in currencies we do not understand. Make the natives love us for what we are and not for what we can contribute to their worldly goods.

Grant us the strength to visit the museums, the cathedrals, the palaces, and if, perchance, we skip an historical monument to take a nap after lunch, have mercy on us for our flesh is weak.

Dear God, protect our wives from “bargains” they don’t need or can’t afford. Lead them not into temptation for they know not what they do.

Almighty Father, keep our husbands from looking at foreign women and comparing them to us. Save them from making fools of themselves in nightclubs. Above all, please do not forgive them their trespasses for they know exactly what they do.

And when our voyage is over, grant us the favour of finding someone who will look at our home movies and listen to our stories, so our lives as tourists will not have been in vain.

CLENT PARISH COUNCIL

New Council From May A contested election was held on 2 May as there were more candidates than seats. The outcome of the election was that we welcome two new Councillors Andrew Sherrey and Margaret Sherrey and we say goodbye to Kevin Smith and Richard Price. The Parish Council thanks both Kevin and Richard for their hard work and commitment during their period as Councillors. There are 7 elected Councillors: Nick Sugden, Ed Sheppard, Peter Bates, Caroline Howard, Drew Beaumont, Andrew Sherrey and Margaret Sherrey. The first meeting of the new Council took place on 20th May, our Annual Parish Council Meeting, when we elected Nick Sugden as Chairman and Ed Sheppard as Vice Chairman for the next 12 months. Council Meeting Dates The Council meets on the third Monday of the month at Clent Parish Hall, Church Ave , Clent. Our meetings commence at 7pm and the first 30 minutes are set aside for Parishioners to raise questions to the Council. Our next meeting will be held on 15 July so please come along and join us. We have a very active Junior Parish Council who have their own meeting each month at 6.30pm. It takes place on the same day as the Parish Council meeting and they provide an update to the Parish Council meeting which follows. CLENT GARDENING CLUB

The month of May saw members enjoy an early season garden visit to Oak Tree House @ Marlborough, Bromsgrove which, despite the damp and overcast evening, was attended by around 20 hardy members who, after traversing the garden, were suitably fortified with the usual offering of tea and cakes.

The May monthly meeting comprised a talk by Hilary Twig entitled “how to make the most of your cuttings” which largely comprised a practical demonstration on the best way to succeed. After a long career at Pershore Horticultural College Hilary can rightly be regarded as an expert in her filed and her various advice was well received by the membership.

Hilary gave a number of useful tips including using fresh compost rather than recycling from old pots, ensuring cleanliness of equipment to prevent contamination and, if using rooting powder, always tip a little powder out of the main jar to again prevent contamination of your supply.

Hilary demonstrated the best method to take cuttings form a variety of different plants following which she espoused the virtue of patience as plants will take differing periods of time to germinate.

Altogether a very useful evening for the practical gardener following which, after a short question and answer session, members enjoyed the usual tea/coffee and biscuits before the raffle was drawn and the Chairman announced the results of the monthly competitions.

The Chairman reminded members that the next meeting would b on Friday 28 June comprising a talk by Robin Pearce on “Crazy Daises (Exploring the World of Daisy-like flowers” following which the meeting closed.

CLENT PRIMARY SCHOOL

Clent Primary School Sponsored Walk

On Friday 24th of May Clent Primary School pupils climbed Kilimanjaro - well sort of!

We took the whole school up into the Clent Hills to work together to climb the entire height of Kilimanjaro. There were lots and lots of different reasons for doing it including:

• Giving our children a chance to explore the beautiful surroundings of our local area

• To learn about plotting routes, calculating distances and thinking about pace

• To compare and contrast 2 very different environments

• To think about our impact as human beings on our local environment

We are also using it to raise money to fund our production. We are really going for it this year and as a result the license fee for the production is significantly larger than usual. We have asked parents, neighbours, grans, granddads and to dig deep and sponsor the children and to date have raised a staggering £1200!

We had a really lovely morning out engaging with our environment and having some fun too! Lots of parents joined us and the ethos of our school really shone through.

Kidderminster & District

July promises to be a busy month!

Instead of our supper meeting this month, on the 18th July, we have arranged an evening visit to Himley Hall near Dudley. A Grade II listed building set in approximately 180 acres of landscaped gardens designed by Capability Brown. A jewel and green oasis in the West Midlands. It was once the home of the Earls of Dudley and was visited by royals and other high society guests.

At 10.30 a.m. on the 23rd July, we have a visit to EnviroSort near Worcester. It will be fascinating to see how our recycling is sorted, treated and sent on to manufacturers to be used again. One newspaper can be recycled into a new newspaper up to seven times.

Our coffee morning will be held at the George Hotel, Bewdley from 10.00 a.m. on Thursday, 25th July.

SCARECROW FESTIVAL

Thank you for all of your suggestions for the new 2019 Scarecrow theme - we had approaching 100 suggestions via email and Facebook.

We considered all of the suggestions, and in particular the people who said we shouldn’t have a theme at all..as it stifles imagination.

We simply don’t have an event without your scarecrows so we wanted a theme that everyone could relate to but which stimulated your creative thinking.

So, in keeping with our intention to strip the event back to a basic Village Fayre (albeit a big!! Village Fayre) we’ve decided on........ drum roll again please ........ Village Life!

What does Village Life mean to you? Of course it could mean the traditional scarecrows for which our village is famous. It could be our close community, and our lifestyles and pastimes. It could be the transport we use or the sports we play.

Village life could revolve around the school, the allotments, the Rec, the church, the pubs, clubs or the various organisations and charities we are blessed with in the village.

Or, it could it be the people and the jobs that we do (or did), the ones we want to do in the future or even the jobs we wish we’d done.

It could be our pets or pastimes, or anything in the psychedelic power of our imagination. Our friends, neighbours or the clothes we wear or simply keeping the garden tidy to keep up with the Jones’.

Maybe your thoughts turn to Village Life from the past - maybe the Saxons, Romans, Victorians, the high days of scythe making or the dark days of the world wars. You may have memories of the 70s,80s and even more recent history. Or you could even get inspiration from another village in the region or around the world or even look forward to the village of the future. (Get the tin-foil out).

The list could go on and on....

We hope you agree that this wonderful theme is only limited by your imagination.

May 2019 Life at our Hagley Rotary Club enjoyed a significant social and fun packed program with two of our weekly Monday Evening meetings transferred to the Bell at Belbroughton, courtesy of our hosts at the Lyttleton Arms during their recent renovations. The opportunity was taken to have our partners join us for a presentation and quiz on the Black Country.

There was much amusement provided by some answers, and Rotarians took some convincing that a “Tatty-Bonk” was not a pile of potatoes.

Award for Endeavour The Rotary Club of Hagley has now sponsored an annual award at Haybridge High School and Sixth Form for Endeavour. Vice Presedent Godfrey Partridge was privileged to see the Rotary Club Award for Endeavour presented to Katie Perry together with an engraved pen and tokens.

The award will be made annually to a student who the school selects for endeavour in demonstating the Rotary standards of “Service Above Self”

Presidents Away Weekend The Presidents Away Weekend is a much heralded annual social event which Rotarians and their partners look forward to and enjoy. This year President Julie Banks took the club to Shrigley Hall in Derbyshire where we enjoyed the excellent venue and a canal boat ride with lunch.

Entertainment was well provided after the evening dinners by Ted Raymond who delivered comedy and stories with brilliant timing.

This was complemented with songs and music from Godfrey Partridge and wonderful display of pudding tossing by our president accommodated by Jan Harris in impeccable style.

The weekend provided for all Rotarians interests including some brilliant walks in the grounds and a round of golf.

Local company Home Instead Senior Care (Stourbridge, Hagley and Halesowen) have shown following a recent inspection from the Care Quality Commission (CQC) that they are setting a new benchmark for high quality care. Established in 2012 with an office in Hagley, Home Instead say they offer a different sort of service which is tailored to each individual person rather than the usual focus on fast visits and high volumes. Whilst Home Instead can offer personal care and specialises in dementia care, many clients just want some help around the house and with the same CAREGivers visiting each week, they seem more like part of the family who can visit simply for good company, to reignite old hobbies or to get out and about in the local area.

The inspection report explains “People received outstanding care. Without exception, people were extremely complimentary about the caring attitude of all the caregivers who supported them.” One person said, "The carers are all very good and I cannot fault any of them. All wonderful to be honest, so caring and kind." Another person said, “I can't speak highly enough about any of them. They will do anything for me and are so nice and caring in the way they do things.”
