Michael Kalka Phone: 9398 2964 [email protected] Dear Parents No.3 16 th February, 2018 It was with great pleasure that we welcomed our new Parish Priest, Fr Michael Kalka to our first school mass on Ash Wednesday. Fr. Michael then joined the staff for morning tea. We look forward to working closely with Fr Michael and benefitting from his guidance, support and experience. OPENING SCHOOL MASS & BBQ: Thursday 1 st March - 6.00 pm. All families are invited to join us for mass in the church. Our new Preps will sing a special Reflection song after communion. All families and friends are then invited to join, Fr. Michael Kalka and school staff in the school grounds for a BBQ and drinks. The Parents & Friends are organising this but they need your assistance. PLEASE” don’t leave this to that famous person “SOMEONE ELSE”. A note has gone out on Care Monkey to all parents. If you have some time to spare the P & F would certainly appreciate it if you could reply via Care Monkey. Thank you in anticipation for your assistance and involvement and I look forward to seeing you on the night. ANAPHYLAXIS: We have nine students in our school who are anaphylactic, which means they have serious allergic reactions. In our particular case most of our students have an allergy to nuts but also to eggs, shell & white fish, kiwi fruit and peas among other things. If these students eat or in some case, touch, any food products that contain any of these foods or traces of these foods they could be put into a life threatening situation. We are asking for your co-operation particularly if one of these students is in your child’s class, that NO sharing of food takes place. These students are well aware of what they can eat but if you reinforce with your own child that these children are not able to ‘eat’ everything that other children can and to please not share food with them. On special occasion days e.g. birthdays, class teachers will have a ‘treat’ that these students can eat. Daniel Giardina - Prep S. Thomas Yacono - Yr 1/2K. Lucas Giardina - Yr 3/4HK. Daniel Ciavarella & Jamison Lehrer - Yr 3/4M. Oscar Devetak & Samuel Pelns - Yr 3/4V Chloe Zuvela - Yr 5/6C, Grace Moon - Yr 5/6L. PARENTS & FRIENDS: The first meeting of the Parents & Friends Association will be held in the staffroom next Wednesday commencing at 7.30 pm. All parents are welcome especially new parents to the school. Come along and see what is involved - You Might Be Pleasantly Surprised.

In the meantime can we ask that you check your SPAM folders and if you find any Care Monkey or school emails in there, simply mark them as ‘NOT SPAM’ We hope that this will help you receive all important emails to your inbox.

CONGRATULATIONS: Congratulations to the Smith Family on the arrival of a baby sister for Charlotte in Prep D

David Kelly Principal ONE DAY ONLY BOOK FAIR: As part of a new reading rewards program St Mary’s is starting called Star Reader, we are having a ONE DAY ONLY Book Fair on Monday 26th February. It will be held in the school hall starting straight after assembly and finishing at 4pm. This is a great opportunity to see some of this year’s new books and encourage our kids to be reading. Our school library and literacy areas will also benefit from a percentage of the total sales. NEWS FROM THE CHOIR: What a great choir we have this year!! Only the start of week 4 and the choir have already sung at two masses. Very impressive - especially for our new members. This year our experienced choir members are buddying up with our inexperienced members. So choir people, keep a look out for your buddies on Wednesdays at lunch so you can come to rehearsals together. EMMANUEL COLLEGE NEWS: Congratulations to our Year 7s on their excellent start. Books are safely stored in lockers, subject timetables recorded and their new laptops are being well utilized. Homework has begun and the three-day camp program at Portsea commences next week. Students are very much enjoying their Maths Pathway, Life to the Full and Instrumental Music programs. It was great to welcome their parents to this week’s presentation by the Year 7s on Project Based Learning. Congratulations to our 2017 VCE High Achievers; Thien Nguyen, 92.25, Bachelor of Communication Design (Honours), Swinburne University; Thien Nguyen is an ex-student of St Mary’s School. We wish Thein all the best in his future endeavours.
