In the background is Gods call to consider the third commandment, still life‑giving and binding, to make holy the Lords Day by worship and rest. Jews see the Sabbath, Saturday, not so much as a day of worship, but as a day of rest, a day of renewing friendship with God by delighting in the beauty of creation and the joy of family and friends. It is a day for contemplating the wonder of Gods creation, but not disturbing it. For Christians in the first three centuries, the Lords Day, Sun- day, was not for rest, but worship. It was a regular work day. People met before dawn, and after Eucharist hurried off to daily routines. Today we come to Mass, but many hurry off to essential work, not a day of rest. The Lords Day is not the Sabbath, but we can enhance Sundays ability to transform us if we consider embracing some Sab- bath values: having a family meal, going for a walk in a beautiful place, making room in our lives to open ourselves more fully to holi- ness of life in Christ. —James Field, Copyright © J. WORD OF LIFE

For all whose hearts ache from participating in abortion: may they be strengthened to seek the Lord’s compassion, mercy, and healing in the Sacrament of Reconciliation; We pray to the Lord: “Throughout salvation history, God has welcomed repentant sinners with special joy. Jesus concludes the parable of the lost sheep with these words: ‘there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous people who have no need of repentance’ (Lk 15:7).”

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

Although New Year’s Day has been fixed firmly on January 1 for several hundred years, Labor Day has the feel of a great dividing line between leisure and routine. The pace of life has since picked up, and new schedules and commitments crowd us. In the background is God’s call to consider the third commandment, still life‑giving and binding, to make holy the Lord’s Day by worship and rest. III. The Characteristics of Faith

I. "Lord, Look Upon the Faith of Your Church"

168 It is the Church that believes first, and so bears, nourishes and sustains my faith. Everywhere, it is the Church that first confesses the Lord: "Throughout the world the holy Church acclaims you", as we sing in the hymn Te Deum; with her and in her, we are won over and brought to confess: "I believe", "We believe". In the Rituale Romanum, the minister of Baptism asks the catechumen: "What do you ask of God's Church?" and the answer is: "Faith." "What does faith offer you?" "Eternal life."54

169 Salvation comes from God alone; but because we receive the life of faith through the Church, she is our mother: "We believe the Church as the mother of our new birth, and not in the Church as if she were the author of our salvation."55 Because she is our mother, she is also our teacher in the faith.

—Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. S. PARTE I LA PROFESION DE LA FE
