FROM THE OGLE OFFICE Dear friends: One of the nice things that happens as a parish priest from time to time is a visit from former parishioners who happen to be visiting and want to see their old home parish. It doesn’t happen a lot, but when it does I’m always impressed with the positive memories folks have of their alma mater parish, whether or not they went to the parish school. Some did, while others attended CCD (including Friday night teen dances), but uniformly they speak well of the experience. Some tell me they were married here, and not a few ask to have their vows renewed on the occasion of their visit, whether in a formal or informal way. It all speaks to the importance of one’s parish church as a place where the bonds of community are built while at the same time dispensing the grace of the Paschal Mystery through the sacraments. Community and sacramental grace do indeed go together for many returning parish alumni, and they still do for us here now. That is why we strive to build community by offering experiences of community that are founded upon the sacramental life that we live. For example, during Advent every parish erects Nativity scenes, both inside and outside the church, which are slowly populated with Nativity figures as we approach Christmas Day. This year, we will solemnize our outdoor Nativity scene with a formal event, highlighted by lighting our first official outdoor Christmas tree, complete with carols, hot chocolate and general good cheer. We’d like everyone to feel free to join the event and build that sense of community that we’ve always been known for. Do join us in Wednesday, December 11 at 5:30 PM in front of the rectory. And I thank our pastoral year seminarian Brendon for spearheading the volunteers that will sponsor the event and run the program. Community is built when there is a common intention to fulfill a shared vision. For us Catholic Christians, that vision is the Beatific Vision, a sharing in an eternal divine union of love, of which our sacramental life in general and the Eucharist in particular is the foreshadowing. Everything we do, from formal liturgies, to small scripture groups, to parish societies, to ice-skating trips, to nights of reflection, to big anniversaries, to baptisms and funerals, in some way bears the imprint of our common vision and is energized by sacramental grace. Let us live this Holy Season of Advent in that grace and vision. Msgr. Sean G. Ogle

2019 GIVING TREE It is time for our 12th annual Giving Tree to help those less fortunate than us. Now through the weekend of January 5, there will be 3 trees decorated with tags that will benefit BRIDGE TO LIFE and some parish members from St. Margaret Mary who need our assistance. These trees will be located in the following areas: 1) in the narthex of the upper church, 2) in the West Vestibule near the elevator and 3) in the lower church. We hope you are able to take a tag or more if possible and buy the items listed. Please do not wrap the gift. Just tape the tag to the bag or box so we can identify the item and where it is to go. Please bring the gift by the weekend of January 5 and give to an usher during Masses or bring to the Rectory for safe keeping. We all know times are tough but for those of us lucky enough, a donation will aid someone during this time of year where it is better to give than to receive. God bless you and your families for your generosity.

Petition Against Assisted Suicide An Assisted Suicide Bill (A2694/S3947), also known as the “Medical Aid in Dying Act,” will be brought before the New York State Legislature in early 2020. The Bill would amend the public health law in relation to a terminally ill patient’s request for and use of medication for medical aid in dying. Catholic Teaching on this matter is clear: the gift of life should be respected in all its stages. Assisted suicide, or euthanasia, is nev-er permissible. The Knights of Columbus will be at all the Masses on December 7 & 8 asking for your signature on a “Petition Against Assisted Suicide in New York State.” The petition is sponsored by NY Against Assisted Suicide, https://www.nyagainstas.com/home.html
