The Church has a great love for motherhood—we honor Our Mother Mary during this month of May and we honor all our mothers on this very special day. We should honor our mothers (and fathers) every day, but we should especially take this day to show our immense gratitude to our mothers. We should thank God for the gift of life they have given us and for all the sacrifices they have made.
I want to personally give thanks to all of the mothers in our parishes and ask for the intercession of Our Mother Mary for her guidance to them today and always:
Dear Mother, intercede on behalf of all of our mothers. Ask your Divine Son to give them the grace of surrendered love so that they join with you in giving their own fiat. May they find daily strength to say “yes” to the call to the sacrificial love—the very heart of the vocation of motherhood. May their love and witness be a source of great inspiration for all of us called to follow your Son. Amen

WELCOME, CHILDREN OF GOD: Welcome Lillian Claire Merkel, daughter of Christopher and Andrea Merkel (photo 1). Welcome Allyson Gomez, daughter of Jony and Wendy Gomez (photo 2). Welcome Liam Bryce Yenser, son of Bret and Kenia Yenser (photo 3). 1 DIACONATE ORDINATION: On Saturday, April 27, we were blessed to have two parishioners become deacons (photo 4). Both Chris Komoroski and Na-than Beiersdorfer of St. Cecilia parish. Nathan will now serve St. Cecilia as a permanent deacon. We are so grateful to his wife, Tricia, for her support and sac-rifice. Chris will continue as a transitional deacon and study at Mt . St. Mary seminary for another year, and God willing, he will be ordained a priest next May. 1
PRIESTS AND SEMINARIANS: After a busy Holy Week and Easter weekend I was able to go out to eat with the priests and seminarians who were part of our liturgies (photo 5). It’s nice to spend time with them. 1 PUP CRAWL: The annual Pup Crawl was a big success! I want to thank Dave Gruber for putting together a great time for people to bring their dogs to the St. Cecilia sideyard for a blessing (photo 6). The food from Mazunte and the Mad Tree beer were both greatly enjoyed! 1 REST IN PEACE: David Lee Gaston (photo 7)—“Dave from Forest Park”—died on April 10. The Mass of Christian burial was celebrated on April 27 at St. Anthony. 1 REST IN PEACE. Long time St. Cecilia parishioner Joe Steuer (photo 8) died on Saturday, April 27. Joe and his fam-ily are beloved by this parish. They are alumni and have been a huge part of the success of our annual fes-tival. He will be greatly missed. ACOLYTE: I am very grateful to Joe Fondacaro (photo 9) for all of his hard work on the liturgies during Holy Week and Easter Masses at St. Cecilia. He works behind the scenes but his role is huge. He gets the practices set up with the servers and does so much more. 1 GOLD PANELS: I want to thank Colleen Donovan for painting the new gold panels (photo 10) for the triptych at St. Ce-cilia. The design and color were a perfect backdrop!

Why do Catholic’s make the sign of the Cross? You can identify the Catholics in a room by noticing those who make a gesture known as the Sign of the Cross before they pray. St. Francis de Sales explains:
“The Christian first lifts his hand towards his head while say-ing, ‘In the name of the Father,’ in order to show that the Father is the first person of the Blessed Trinity and the principal and origin of the others. Then, he moves his hand downward toward the stomach while saying, ‘and of the Son,’ in order to show that the Son proceeds from the Father, who sent Him here below into the Virgin’s womb. Finally, he pulls his hand across from the left shoulder to the right while saying, ‘and of the Holy Spirit,’ in order to show that the Holy Spirit, being the third person of the Blessed Trinity, proceeds from the Father and from the Son and is their bond of love and charity, and that it is by His grace that we enjoy the effects of the Passion.
When making the Sign of the Cross, therefore, we confess three great mysteries: the Trinity, the Passion, and the remission of sins” (St. Francis de Sales, The Sign of the Cross).
The Sign of the Cross has been used in prayer since the earliest days of the Church. Circa 386, St. Cyril of Jerusalem stated, “Be the cross our seal, made with boldness by our fingers on our brown and in everything; over the bread we eat and the cups we drink, in our comings and in our goings out; before our sleep, when we lie down and when we awake; when we are traveling, and when we are at rest” (The Works of St. Cyril of Jerusalem, Vol. 2).
No prophet ever encountered God without withdrawing into solitude and silence. Moses, Elijah, and John the Baptist encountered God in the great silence of the des-ert. Today, too, monks seek God in solitude and silence. I am speaking, not just about geographical solitude or movement, but about an interior state. It is not enough to be quiet, either. It is necessary to become silence. For, even before the desert, the solitude and the silence, God is already in man. The true desert is within us, in our soul. Strengthened with this knowledge, we can understand how silence is indispensable if we are to find God. The Father waits for his children in their own hearts. – Robert Cardinal Sarah

Catholicism: Pivotal PlayersFrom Bishop Robert Barron, this sequel to the legendary CATHOLICISM series includes the Emmy-nominated Michelangelo episode, and has aired hundreds of times on public television stations. You’ll discover the places where St. Thomas Aquinas lived, learned, and wrote. Visit the countryside where St. Francis gathered a group of friars and revived the Church. See the places where St. Catherine of Siena ministered and prayed. Trek through England to where Bl. John Henry Newman and G.K. Chesterton left their mark and sparked an English Catholic revival. And through unprecedented HD footage, marvel at the extraordinary art of Michelangelo, from his David statue in Florence, to the Pietà at St. Peter’s, to the Sistine Chapel.

Ministry to Survivors of Abuse The Archdiocese of Cincinnati regards child abuse in all its forms as a serious matter. Anyone who knows of or suspects child abuse by a priest, employee, or volunteer of the Archdiocese should first report the abuse to the appropriate secular legal authority and then contact the Coordinator of Ministry to Survivors of Abuse of the Archdiocese at 513.263.6623 or 1.800.686.2724 ext. 6623.
Marriage Annulments The Catholic Church dedicates much time and effort to prepare couples for marriage. However, despite the couples’ best efforts, unfortunately a marriage union sometimes fails to reach fulfillment for both parties and may end in a civil divorce. The Catholic Church has mechanisms and processes in place to assist people in these situations, especially if they anticipate another marriage.
If you find yourself in this circumstance, we would like to help. To learn more about how to get assistance, please contact Joe Fondacaro in our pastoral region at 871-5757, ext. 222, or at [email protected]. All inquiries are kept in strict confidence.
Ruah WoodsRuah Woods Psychological Services (RWPS) seeks to integrate the best of psychological science and the truths of the Catholic faith — empowering people to more fully embrace and live out their vocation to love according to God’s plan. RWPS provides psychological assessment and therapy for adults, couples, and children. They can be reached at www.RWpsych.org and 513-407-8878.
Ordination Mass for the men becoming priests of Jesus Christ in our archdiocese will be at the Cathedral of St. Peter in Chains on Saturday, May 18, at 11AM.
A big thank-you . . for your generous support of the Catholic Relief Services Collection and for helping Jesus in disguise. The world today is changing rapidly. What was once settled is now questioned, and old traditions are discarded with reckless abandon. What does it mean to be an authentic man in such confusing times? What, if anything, does the Catholic Church have to offer to men today about living a life of true manhood and virtue?
The Catholic Gentleman is a solid and practical guide to manhood and holiness in the modern world. It offers the timeless wisdom of the Catholic Church to the many questions of men today on this important issue and is a great gift for Father’s Day.

Offertory Gift Bearers at St. CeciliaIf your family, or you and a friend, would like to present the gifts at the offertory, please pick up the crucifix from the offertory gifts table before Mass begins. That will let the sacristans know that someone is committed to bringing up the gifts. If you are bringing up the gifts, please approach the gift table once the offertory hymn is introduced. Place the crucifix back on the table, and then wait there until the priest heads down from the sanctuary. Then take the gifts to the priest at the head of the aisle, bow, and return to your pew. We hope that this system will make it possible for a variety of people to assist at this part of the Mass.
