THE SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM IN THE PARISH Baptizing Infants and Children Under 7 Years of Age

WHY DO CATHOLICS BAPTIZE? After his resurrection, Jesus gave this mission to his apostles: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.” (Mt 28:16-20) By commanding his disciples to baptize all nations, he established the means by which people would die to sin—original sin and actual—and begin to live a new life with God. WHY WAS JESUS BAPTIZED? The origin and foundation of Christian Baptism is Jesus. Before starting his public ministry, Jesus submitted himself to the baptism given by John the Baptist. The waters did not purify him; he cleansed the waters. Jesus’ immersion in the water is a sign for all human beings of the need to die to themselves to do God’s will. Jesus did not need to be baptized because he was totally faithful to the will of his Father and free from sin. However, he wanted to show his solidarity with human beings in order to reconcile them to the Father. WHAT IS THE MEANING OF BAPTISM? In John’s Gospel, Jesus has a dialogue with Nicodemus. Jesus teaches that Baptism is necessary for salvation. “No one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and Spirit.” (Jn 3:5) The word baptism in its origins is Greek and means “immersion” and “bath.” Immersion in water is a sign of death and emersion out of the water means new life. To bathe in water is also to undergo cleansing. Saint Paul sums up this truth when he says, “You were buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through faith in the power of God, who raised him from the dead.” (Col 2:12) Baptisms in our parish for infants and children under the age of 7: Holy Martyrs Church—1st Sunday of the month, during or after the 10:30 Mass Sacred Heart Church—2nd Sunday of the month, during or after the 11:00 Mass St. Gregory Church—3rd Sunday of the month, during or after the 8:30 Mass St. Jude Church—4th Sunday of the month, during or after the 9:30 Mass For further information regarding Baptism, please contact Deacon Dennis Popadak or Georgette Dionne.

CUMBERLAND/FALMOUTH FOOD PANTRIES The New Year is already showing an increase of 15% for families in need of assistance. These figures are a comparison to the same weeks in 2016 and not just due to the school vacation. We know that you respond quickly to the pantry call for help and they are in need of canned fruit, soups, pastas, ravioli, juices, beef stew, detergent, toilet paper, paper towels, soaps, and shampoos. We recently came across a prayer which nicely sums up the mission we all work to accomplish: “Lord Jesus, give us the grace to reach out to those in need. May we emulate you in your compassion and generosity. Teach us to die to our selfishness so that we may, like you, be a person for others.” - Jack Mullin

(followed by the 5:30 Mass) “God made each of us in his own image and likeness. He desires

to be united with us forever in a loving relationship. God loves us,

treats us with respect, and asks us to do the same to others. Every

person is sacred and must be treated with the dignity they deserve.

No one should ever be treated callously or carelessly - everyone

should be cherished and protected!” (Cardinal Timothy M. Dolan)

Seth and I would like to take a moment and thank everyone for their prayers and help over the last few trying months. When we first found out that our youngest, Andy, needed the same brain surgery that his oldest brother had 10 months earlier, we were scared and overwhelmed. Finding out less than 2 weeks later that Andy’s sister, Cynthia, also needed the same surgery would have been devastating except that God in His infinite goodness had given us a parish family to help carry this cross. Claire Levesque reached out to her prayer warriors and they started praying for us. Matthew Rogers organized a prayer vigil for Andy on the day of his surgery and it brought great comfort to our hearts knowing that so many people were asking God to protect our son. A month later when Cynthia’s surgery came around, once again our parish family stepped forward to pray, help, and comfort us. Claire stepped forward and this time organized a week of meals for us. So many people sent so many delicious things and Claire took time out of her schedule to deliver them for us. After months of worry and holding our breath wondering if our children would be okay, it was very nice to come home from the second surgery and not have to think about making meals. We will be forever grateful to God for this blessing/cross and to our parish family for showing us so much love and support. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts, Cathy and Seth Madore and family.

As we enter the winter season we will post cancella-tions and closings on our website, www.pothe.org. That is the best way for you to stay informed.

FRIENDSHIP HOUSE

For our January meal for the men at Friendship House, parishioners donated

numerous main dishes (baked, teriyaki, stew), pork tenderloin/potatoes, turkey

meatloaf, beef stir-fry/rice, three purchased lasagnes, a green bean mushroom

dish, fresh local eggs/cider/various vegetables, and a bag of toiletries. The men

at Friendship House welcomed this large amount of food and goods gratefully,

and will put it to very good use.

Due to the increase in colds and flu during the winter months, the Parish of the Holy Eucharist will follow the

established protocol and has suspended distributing the Precious Blood during Communion. Thank you for your

understanding in this matter.
