Joining the dots.... Every time we come to Mass, we hear Gospel stories of Jesus’ life and teaching. On Sundays this year, these stories have come mainly from the Gospel of Mark although, because this Gospel is very short, there has also been a fair slice of John’s account. Throughout our next liturgical year which begins on November 28, we will turn our focus to Luke’s Gospel. Will this make a difference to our picture of Jesus and our understanding of his life and message?

If you have never read one of the Gospels right through from beginning to end, you’re not alone. Most of us are probably in that boat, so that our acquaintance with the various stories about Jesus comes almost exclusively from the readings we hear at Mass. Unfortunately, this means we often have a less than optimal understanding of the messages these readings contain because we know almost nothing of the context of each incident or teaching, or where it fits within the overall flow of the Gospel.

This year, we’d like to try to join the dots so that we can enter our liturgies next year with greater understanding of the world in which early Christian communities grew and spread; when, how and why the Gospel of Luke was put together; where the stories contained in it come from; how this Gospel differs from the others; who the characters and groups Jesus encounters in Luke’s account were; and the distinctive picture of Jesus this Gospel contains.

The Parish Adult Formation group is providing some opportunities for you to learn a little more about the third Gospel during the three weeks leading up to the beginning of Advent, so that you will have a greater appreciation of Luke when we make the switch. The proposed times and dates are: Wednesdays Sundays October 27 - 9.30 to 11.00am October 31 - 10.15 to 11.45am November 3 - 9.30 to 11.00am November 7 - 10.15 to 11.45am November 10 - 9.30 to 11.00am November 14 - 10.15 to 11.45am

Please come along on either Wednesdays or Sundays and enjoy this fascinating journey. You might be surprised (and enlightened.)

(If there is anyone who can’t make a daytime session but would like to participate, please let us know. We might be able to provide an evening opportunity if there is a need.)

From Adam Bennie, Principal (on long service leave)

Enjoy the holidays. Have a safe and happy holiday break and I look forward to seeing you all in term 4.

Thank you all for your continued support. Stay safe and enjoy this beautiful start to Spring!

A VOCATION VIEW: If we really believe in something, it does not seem to be a sacrifice to give up everything else to pursue that one dream. Jesus asks for total dedication, promising in return rewards that no one else can promise: “Go and sell everything you own ... then come; follow me.”

First Assembly of the Plenary Council

The Plenary members based within the Archdiocese of Brisbane have been gathering each day in Cathedral House to participate via Microsoft Teams in the Plenary sessions and small group gatherings. Participating members at the mid-way point were feeling a great sense of hope. There is a call to trust the process which as Archbishop Mark Coleridge says is a way of saying we trust the Holy Spirit. And amongst the rich diversity of voices represented in the membership there comes a strong shared commitment to listen to the Holy Spirit through the voices of each other. The First Assembly is just the beginning of a 9 month process which will end with the Second Assembly in mid-2022.

Grace of Baptism Retreat day A retreat day to discover how precious you are in Christ, receiving the healing touch of God and experience the Power of the Holy Spirit in your life. All are warmly invited to this retreat day on Saturday 16 October 2021 from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm at Church of the Twelve Apostles, 111 Yallambee Road, Jindalee. Contact Chris Guyler on 0414 481 506 or email : [email protected]
