A Reflection from the desk of the Pastor…June 21, 2020 The Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time

This week and for the next two weeks, the theme of the Mass readings will focus on discipleship; which the Gospel of Mathew significantly highlights. I have this friend who is a minister in the United Church of Christ. He also works as a chaplain in a hospital. His work is very demanding. If he is not working at the hospital, he is working at the Church: either visiting elderly Church members or attending church meetings or programs. Having known him for as long as three years,

I can say he enjoys pastoral ministry. But occasionally, he would tell me, "I think if there were reincarnation, and I had to come back to life, I would have nothing to do with the Church, family, and people. I would want to live a quiet life of my own. It is not worth burning yourself out for people."

I quite understand where my friend was coming from and what he felt since I am a minister myself. As a minister, you meet people at their good, bad, and ugly condition of life; and there could be nothing as draining as these encounters. Most of the people you meet do not have a personal relationship with you. Ministry most often has no "clinical format." Instead, individual cases and circumstances create the format and the plan. That is the difficulty of discipleship.

In the first reading this weekend, Jeremiah shares his prophetic experience. The life of faith is not always serene. It is not merely a quiet submission to God's will. God does not seem to respond to Jeremiah's lamentation. His prophetic tasks take him to the edge of despair. He experiences the silence of God. Call to Worship

Good morning and welcome to the Sacred Heart Church. As things begin to open up and we can see the green valley ahead, remember to thank God for the many gifts we have received during this time of trial. You may have heard your parents or grandparents tell you, “Life is not a rose garden.” They were simply telling us there will always be challenges in our life. But we have the ability to deal with those challenges through our attitudes. As I move through my ministry work I see a lot of people dealing with despair. I challenge them to look beyond themselves by helping someone else see the good in their lives. It is by helping someone else we get a glimpse of the beauty within our own life. During these trying months so many have expressed their gratitude to God for the gifts in their lives that have resurfaced. Sometimes we get so comfortable with the gifts we forget they can be taken away. Maybe this time was a gentle nudge from God to remember that he is good all the time! Joan

We want to thank all our father’s, biological, step or just a special guy who gives of his heart, to guide our youth and families. May God protect and bless you all!

As we begin the journey of Ordinary Time, the longest season of the Liturgical year, Jesus will engage us to look more closely at how we live our lives. Use this most extraordinary time to listen, learn, discern and remember, Christianity is not a noun, but an action verb.

How can you put your Christian calling to work?-Joan

Catholic Service and Ministry Appeal (CSMA) 2020

It is time again to prayerfully consider your stewardship for the CSMA appeal campaign this year. The CSMA enables education programs and supports organizations that help the poor, such as the Catholic Urban

Programs, Daystar Community Program, etc. The appeal also supports such programs as: Respect for Life, Office of Worship, Hispanic Ministry, Seminarians/Vocations and Youth Ministry to name just a few. Sacred Heart has 105 registered households with a pledge goal of $3,866; 14 households have already pledged $1,285.00. The appeal counts on your stewardship, please consider helping to meet our goal and support those agencies who are the hands of Jesus for our community.

Special Collection Dates Changed

We have received information that two special collection dates have been changed due to some parishes being closed due to COVID19:

Holy Land Collection will be held on September 12-13 (originally scheduled for April 10)

Peter’s Pence Collection will be held on October 3-4 (originally scheduled for June 28)

Respect Life Corner- “Even all the hairs of your head are counted.”

In Matthew’s Gospel, we learn that God is hands-on, with us moment by moment; even counting all of our hairs! We are encouraged to “be not afraid” -we are priceless in God’s eyes. But we must be able to talk about God. Say His name. Don’t shy away from bringing up all the good things God has done in your life. He is working for your good. It is our job to work for the good of others by acknowledging Christ and His work in our lives to those people in our life. Failure to do that can separate us from Him. Learn, Act, Connect and Pray- We must know that one day we will stand on our own before the Father. We will hear Him say, “this one is my faithful disciple, or this one is not mine.” Let’s pray and vow daily to be faithful to God and to the unique mission for which God formed us in the womb. God has a plan for us all!

Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time – 21 June 2020

Jeremiah 20:10-13. Psalm 69:8-10, 14, 17, 33-35. Romans 5:12-15. Matthew 10:26-33.

“Do Not Be Afraid.” Who would count every single hair on our heads? God, who knows us better than we know ourselves. And loves us, too. Though we may be afraid of some things in life, afraid of the shape of the world, even afraid of some persons, we need never fear God – who is with us like a mighty champion. Of what and of whom am I afraid? How will I trust that divine power is superior to earthly power? How can I, like God, tend to at least one who is poorer than me? Diane Clark, Diocese of Belleville
