Christmas Market and Concert: Despite the awful weather we were very grateful to all who worked so hard to make this successful. The events in the Marquee during the day were much appreciated and we thank our choir and the Raphaelites, who, at such a busy time, came and supported us. Youth representative (rep), a Caritas rep, a Marriage & Family rep, a lay rep from each parish (ideally a Parish Council member), a Catechist rep, a Deacon, a Catholic Education rep and possibly a secretary. The ongoing work of this group is to share facilities between our three parishes, St Vincents, St Hughs and St Johns, and Holy Angels and to provide formation during the spring and autumn terms. This spring it is our turn to do this. Dates were identified for three talks, 8 March, 15 March and 22 March. Father Martin to approach possible speakers.

SAFEGUARDING: The new members of the group were acquainted with the system that is in place at present. Richard and Carla Keidish are our Safeguarding Officers and are audited by the Diocese. It is the duty of group leaders who head groups that are involved with young children or vulnerable adults to notify Richard and Carla of any new members they may recruit, so that they can be DBS checked. It was also suggested that we should have a list of all volunteers, in any capacity, kept in the parish office. There was to be a meeting prior to the next committee meeting to review this.

PARISH HALL UPDATE: At present we have raised £171,418 and have £200,000 in pledges, a fantastic achievement in just over one year. Meetings are progressing with the Diocese with regard to plans for the Hall; it is hoped that it will have capacity for 150 people, thereby making it a very viable place for lettings etc. As soon as there is definite news the parish community will be notified.

PARISH ROOF UPDATE: The delay in finishing this project is due in part to the unusual shape of the roof over the sanctuary. There is to be a meeting in the next couple of weeks with the contractor, and Father Martin will update when this has taken place.

AOB:

A request that the amount collected in any second collections at the weekend should be published in the Newsletter was duly noted.

MICROPHONE: This is to be repaired as soon as possible.

Present Fr Martin Onuoha, Gavin Delaney, Chris Simpson, Ann Campion, Eamonn Kennedy, Kathleen Case

Apologies Emily Duffy, Chris Howes.

Opening Prayer The meeting started with a prayer led by Gavin.

Parish Facebook Page and Social Media Paul Boyfield had been invited to attend the meeting at the beginning by Fr Martin in order to inform us about having set up a Facebook account for the parish. Paul explained the various ways it could be used. The diocese has been informed and we discussed the guidelines set out by them for social media usage in parishes. Approval to continue and to inform us in more detail in the future was agreed. The page and procedures agreed are in line with the diocesan requirements. Details of the page will be published in the newsletter. Paul was thanked for leading this project which it is hoped will appeal to the youth of the parish.

Minutes of last meeting The minutes of the last meeting were reviewed and accepted.

MATTERS ARISING Parish Spirituality: Kathleen Case had taken advice from Marcel Perch and Eddie Drozdziak who had both attended life in the spirit seminars in the past. They both highly recommended the idea and explained in detail how to go about setting such a seminar up. In brief it usually lasts six weeks and entails one night per week attendance at church. There are usually inspiring speakers followed by breaking up into groups where witnessing takes place. Those attending are given short scripture readings to meditate upon at home each day prior to the church attendance. All sorts of practical advice was given about what types of organisation and support groups e.g. music ministry. Both felt that they personally knew of a lot of people outside our parish who would like to attend should our parish decide to go ahead. Finally it was recommended that a notice asking for prayers for success of the Life in the Spirit Seminars should be put in the Newsletter from now on.

Father Martin had spoken to the Diocese and they have a facility available to support parishes that wish to embark on such a seminar.

It was agreed that prior to taking on such a commitment further discussion would take place outside of the meeting and was delegated to Kathleen, Ann and Gavin.

Mozart Concert: This event proved to be an enormous success and pictures of the event were put on the website. Over £2,000 was raised for the Parish Hall Fund.

Advent Appeal: The parish community were most helpful in making suggestions as to which groups should receive financial support from us. Two additional collections had been imposed on us by the Diocese , Caritas Shrewsbury and an appeal by the nuns of the Servants of the Holy Spirit Nuns. In order to accommodate them all it was agreed that collections would be held on the Sundays of Advent as follows: 1st Servants of the Holy Spirit, 2nd Caritas Shrewsbury, 3rd AND 4th Cystic Fibrosis Research. Aid to the Church In Need were to be offered the First Sunday of Lent.

Carols by Candlelight: This is expected to be a popular event and consideration was given to crowd control and arranging for sufficient numbers of volunteers to help with the smooth running of the service. GD to liaise with Ian Provost on health and safety. Christmas Market:

The stall with Catholic items suitable for Christmas available to purchase has been arranged with Ann Tipper.

Christmas Eve Mass for Children: This is to be held at the same time as last year 4-30pm. The liturgy team had met in the light of the large numbers attending and no gifts would be given out this year. GD to liaise with Ian Provost on health and safety.

Standing Orders to the Church: Kathleen confirmed that supplies of Standing Orders and Gift Aid Forms were available at the back of church for parishioners.

Cafod Representative: The new parish representative is Teresa Tarry. Many thanks to her for taking on this important role.

Office Privacy: This still need to be addressed by Father Martin and Office Staff

Young People’s Award: Unfortunately the deadline was missed this year.

Elections to the Parish Council: Six people who were nominated have agreed to stand. Their details and a short personal statement have been displayed at the back of Church. Gavin is to arrange a ballot to be done during the weekend of 18/19 November (Sunday Masses and Saturday Vigil Mass).

ANY OTHER BUSINESS: Additional Sunday Mass. A Sunday evening Mass is now being offered at 6pm, in addition to our usual three Masses. As the congregation grows it will become necessary to formalise rotas and so on but at the moment it was possible to manage without.

Father Humphrey A request for Father Humphrey to write a short biography to introduce himself to the parish had been made, It was felt that this would be useful.

Organist for 24th and 25th December: So far we have only one organist scheduled to play for the Christmas Masses. No pressure should be put on any one individual to do too much. Other options were to be explored.

Safeguarding: Father Martin recently attended a course on safeguarding and he discussed with the parish safeguarding representatives to ensure we were meeting all the criteria required. Gavin expressed concerns but was told that as long as risk assessments are carefully adhered to we are meeting all our responsibilities in this extremely important area of protection for the vulnerable.

Mini Vinnies: This has now launched in St Vincent's Primary School in conjunction with the SVP. It was asked to be noted that the SVP have our support and prayers in this important initiative. At least one of our parishioners has been made a Mini Vinnie, he is 7 years old (and very proud)

Data Protection: We are continuing to evaluate ways of improving and maintaining to the highest levels all the information held within the confines of the parish. This will become more important once the diocese return the database after Mission Together has finished.

Closing Prayer by Fr Martin.

Date of next meeting: 11th January 2018

MATTERS ARISING

Parish Spirituality: It was decided to investigate ‘Life in the Spirit’ Seminar. Ann Campion and Kathleen Case to

feed back at our next meeting with a view to holding this eight-week seminar between Easter and Pentecost 2018.

Garden Masses Presbytery Mass - 30th August (for volunteers in Father’s Garden): This proved to be a very

happy occasion with a large number of people attending. Congratulations go to Val and Jock Nicolson who were

presented with a Papal Blessing in recognition of all the work they have done and still continue to do for our Parish

Community.

Hale Barns Carnival: This event proved to be a spectacular event exceeding all expectations and raising

approximately £30,000. Huge thanks go to Max Eden, who master minded the whole event, the Parish Hall team and

the many volunteers who helped over the four days. A Mass of Thanksgiving was celebrated on 2 August and

refreshments were served at the Bull’s Head for all those who helped in any way.

Parish Database: Once the ‘Mission Together’ has finished the final version of the database will be sent to us.

School Governors for St Vincent’s Primary: Both the Diocese and the Governing body were now fully aware of

the situation. It is hoped that they will give us notice of any vacancies in good time should they arise and facilitate us

playing a full part in the appointment of new Govenors.

Carols by Candlelight: This event is scheduled to take place on 10 December. There is a team of people

already preparing this service.

Catholic items suitable for the Christmas available to purchase. Gavin Delaney to arrange.

Christmas Eve Mass for Children: This will be held at the same time as last year, 4.30 pm. It was suggested

that children at all the Christmas Masses should receive a little gift, a chocolate bar. This was agreed.

Page 6: parish pastoral council - Holy Angels Church Pastoral Council .pdf · HOLY ANGELS PARISH COUNCIL MEETING 11 JANUARY 2018 AT 7PM 1 PRESENT Fr Martin Onuoha, Gavin Delaney, Sue Brown,

Standing Orders to the Church: For parishioners wanting to give to church in this way the necessary forms should be

made readily available at the back of church. Also, envelopes for visiting parishioners who want to contribute should

also be available to be picked up at the rear of the church. Kathleen Case to look into this.

Parish Minutes: A plea for a hard copy of the minutes to be readily available in the office was made by Gavin

Delaney. Kathleen Case to look to maintaining this.

Bidding Prayers: An annual meeting to exchange views on this ministry was recommended with material available

for the members.

Parish Feast Day:It was agreed that we should move the Parish BBQ to Pentecost in view of the short time available

to organise. Gavin Delaney to visit ‘The Starving Man’ to explain this. To celebrate our feast day, it was agreed that

coffee/tea should be served after each Mass and that we should ask for contributions of cupcakes from our

parishioners. Ann Campion to put a notice in the Newsletter.

AOB: Thanks, were extended to Jo Kinney and Rosalie Carey for the work they have both done in preparing our

young people for Confirmation and First Sacraments. They are both now standing down from these roles. Ann

Campion to arrange for flowers to be sent to them both.

Newsletter.

Office Privacy: Due to the confidentiality of some of the files in the office there is a need to provide a

secure unit to house them. This needs to be urgently addressed by Father Martin and the Office staff.

imminently. The contractors have promised that everything will be off site by the end of November.

Opening Prayer The meeting began with a prayer by Emily Duffy.

Minutes of Last Meeting Confirmation - The candidates and their families all had a wonderful evening. They then met for an after Confirmation Party at Red House Farm. Many comments were made about how lovely the service was and thanks were given to Jo Kinney for her work. Helen Fidler has agreed to help with Confirmation next year.

Parish Database – continues to be discussed about the best way to get the information from parishioners. It was felt that the best way to do this was as a whole parish when Mission Together is launched by the Diocese.

RCIA – this programme is going well with 27 potential candidates. Confirmation will be spread across Easter and Pentecost so there is sufficient time to prepare all the candidates. Holy Angels was the best-represented parish for RCIA with the least number of catechists.

Pilgrimage to Medjugorie – the pilgrimage is ready to go with 20 attendees.

Churches Together in Hale – the new representative is Gabrielle Quirke although there should also be another representative.

Church Fabric It has been decided that Children’s Liturgy should no longer be held upstairs due to the safety concern around buckets on the stairs.

It is hoped that the work on the Church roof is going to begin in the spring. The Diocese, Board of Finance, has approved the repairs to the roof and tenders have been sent out. A date is to be confirmed soon.

Parish Hall Progress continues with fund raising. Donor forms have been given out so that donations, whether small or large, are encouraged.

A Hotpot Supper and Auction is taking place on 29th April. This is being advertised at the back of church.

There is also to be a collection of old £1 coins before they new £1 coin comes in.

The Festival, to be held in July is taking shape and there is a lot of exciting things, which are planned and happening. It was suggested that Father should speak to Max and the committee about making an address from the pulpit, perhaps every month, updating the congregation on the progress that is being made. All fundraising ideas are in the newsletter.

Bishop’s Pastoral Visit It was a success in which the Bishop was delighted with the efforts made by the Parish to celebrate the anniversary of his Ordination. The Bishop expressed what a happy Parish Holy Angels is.

Office Cover The office is to be open every morning. Cover is as follows; Monday is Judith, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday is Maureen and Tuesday and Thursday is Kathleen. The office is open from 9.30am-12.30pm. Kathleen is a volunteer and the Parish thanks her for her efforts.

Page 9: parish pastoral council - Holy Angels Church Pastoral Council .pdf · HOLY ANGELS PARISH COUNCIL MEETING 11 JANUARY 2018 AT 7PM 1 PRESENT Fr Martin Onuoha, Gavin Delaney, Sue Brown,

Heating The heating for the Women’s Day of Prayer was only put on for a short period of time. There were comments about it being cold in church. In response to concern about using the heating, Chris Simpson or Ian Provost should be contacted to ensure it is put on properly for the duration of meetings.

One of the heaters is still not working and the company have been asked to come and either repair or replace it. It is still under warranty.

In future, where events are booked in during the colder months, it is necessary to make a note in the diary regarding heating being switched on in sufficient time and for sufficient duration.

Children’s Community Rob Tanti has suggested a Children’s Community Welcoming Service beginning with a Reception Mass for all children about to begin school in early September and doing First Sacraments that year. There is also the suggestion of a Mass for Year 6 in July when children are due to leave school and Year 7 before they start the Confirmation process. Masses will be on a Sunday.

To extend this to our parishioners who are going to university, a Mass could be held in early September. Our young people could be sent off to university with a Bible/Catechism to remind them they are part of the Church. Mass will be on a Wednesday.

Rob Tanti and Maura Casey to oversee this and to look for additional volunteers. Dates to be fixed at the next PCC on 11th May.

Easter Liturgies Evelyn Delaney is organising the children’s Easter services.

It was suggested that the service on Easter Sunday is focused more on the children and potentially do an Easter Egg hunt in the field opposite. The Altar Servers would hide the Easter Eggs after the 10.30am Mass and families would be asked to take their children to find them. Eamonn is to be asked to organise the Altar Servers.

There will be eggs available at the other Masses.

The Easter Vigil Mass to be organised with Prep School Hall to be booked for the gathering afterwards.

St Vincent’s are holding their Easter Service at Holy Angels on 11th April at 6.30pm. The APA is having their pastoral service at St Vincent’s on 10th April at 7.30pm.

Governors at St Vincent’s School Gavin is liaising with Diocese directly regarding the Governors at St Vincent’s School. Holy Angels is not represented on this Board.

APA Talks All of these meetings had been planned and booked by the time of the APA meeting. St Hugh’s Hall is well used and may not have been available but Holy Angels were not asked. It was felt that the three parishes should each hold a meeting in the future. Emily has asked that Chris and Ann explain the role of the APA in the next PPC Meeting.

Garden Masses Garden Mass – 31st May at 7pm Garden Mass – 21st June at 7pm Garden Mass – 28th July at 7pm Presbytery Mass - 30th August (for volunteers in Father’s Garden)

Mass for Seniors and Housebound This will be held once a month at Sunrise with lunch to be provided afterwards. Volunteers will be sought and mothers with preschool children and babies would be very welcome.

Date of Next Meeting 11th May at 7pm

Closing Prayer A prayer by Father Martin closed the meeting.

ADVENT and CHRISTMAS –

WREATH AND CHRISTMAS DECORATION MAKING – Jo Kinney and Emily Duffy

facilitated these successful events for the children. Thanks were noted.

CAROLS BY CANDLELIGHT – Sunday 11 December. Thanks were noted to Emily

for facilitating this event which was again very successful and very well

attended. Feedback was discussed, mainly regarding the length and content of

the event, and this will be considered when planning the event next year,

musician collaboration and more help being required.

CHRISTMAS FAMILY MASS – Thanks were noted to Cathy Rawlings and everyone

who helped organise this Mass. Cathy joined the meeting to give a review.

This Mass was a resounding success with numbers attending exceeding

expectations; approximately 600 of which 250 were children. This required

some flexibility with proceedings and has given useful information which will

be fed in to next year’s planning; including stewarding.

ADVENT APPEAL – the SUDAN Baby Appeal run by the SVP was really well

1. A suggestion was made that young adults should be invited and encouraged to take part in the liturgies of the major feasts in the Church’s year. It was agreed that this would be done and that we could liaise with the catechists of the Confirmation group in order to do this.
