AUGUST 30, 2015 TWENTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

“Be doers of the word and not hearers only……..” James The curtain has closed on the summer vacation and it is time once again for the students to take the stage at Saint Vincent Martyr School. How quickly the time goes during these months! I am sure that school is the last place that the children want to enter next Wednesday. When they will cross our threshold we are ready to receive them with open arms and open hearts and we are charged with strengthening their resolve to be doers of the word and not hearers only . Being able to share our faith unreservedly is a blessing beyond compare. We pray together in the morning sharing the Word of God so that the children are imbued with a spirit of God’s great love for them. It gives them an opportunity also to take the time to hear God’s individual call to make His love known wherever they are. This is a call that the children take very seriously as can be gleaned from the many service projects that they initiate themselves. The foundation is being laid for future philanthropists among us. The future of the Catholic Church is in good hands with our students. This will be a very exciting year for us! You will get to witness the raising of a new building at the Green Village Road end of our school. How blessed we are! We ask you to continue to pray for the success of this enterprise. I commend our faculty and staff and welcome our wonderful students to another year of striving to build God’s Kingdom among us and ask you our parishioners to be a part of Saint Vincent Martyr School’s “God Team” by joining us in prayer.

DAILY READINGS

TWENTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

First Reading: Deuteronomy 4:1-2, 6-8 Moses tells the people to always observe the statutes God has given them, without adding or subtracting from these laws. He reminds them that the law is just, and that any nation who heard their statutes would consider them a wise nation. Second Reading: James 1:17-18, 21b-22, 27 James discusses the gifts that God has given to all people and implores them to respond by welcoming the words of truth that can save them. He emphasizes that through good deeds and pure conduct, our faith in God is proven to him. Gospel: Mark 7:1-8, 14-15, 21-23 The Pharisees observed some of Jesus’ disciples eating without first purifying their hands and ask the disciples why they are going against their ancestor’s traditions. Jesus responds that nothing from the outside can make a person impure. The only true evil, acts such as fornication, murder, and greed among others, come from within and make a person impure.

ST. VINCENT MARTYR SCHOOL NEWS

When over 460 children cross the threshold of SVMS on September 2 they will come face to face with renditions of the interiors of six new classrooms scheduled to be completed by the end of the school year. The addition will accomodate our growing school and provide the Middle School students with 21st century classrooms with modern furnishings and cutting edge technology. S.T.E.M. is now school-wide and the teachers have been trained in integrating Science, Technology, Engineering and Math into cohesive lessons that are student driven and whet the students' creative appetites. The students enjoy a wide range of special subjects with Music, Art, Gym, Theatre Arts, Library, Public Speaking, Spanish and Latin being a part of the school day. Our school community uses the gospel of the day as a springboard for learning how to live like Jesus. Weekly Masses and Morning Prayer provide the students with the nourishment that they need to have the courage to be like Jesus. Before and after care for the parents who need a safe and nurturing environment for their children beyond the typical school day is also offered. There are a wide range of sports available some of which are basketball, track/field, soccer, baseball. A variety of after school activities include Playwrights, Forensics, Cake Decorating, Chess, Scouting, Reading Buddies, Science club and much more. The Parents' International Club has representatives from 20 countries meeting twice a month. SVMS is officially recognized by the AdvanceED Accreditation Commission. An Open House is scheduled for November 12 and 13. Registration materials are available from Mary Brooks, Director of Admissions at 973-377-1104, ext. 203 or visit the website at www.svmsnj.org. A Family Perspective

In today's Gospel, Jesus warns "What comes from within can defile" a person. Families need to worry about "outside influences" but also about "inside influences." The values our children carry for a lifetime are learned at home. "Habits of the hearth" are the most powerful influences on a child. That's the good news! That can also be the bad news!
