p 2 January 8, 2017

Back at the end of August, St. Lawrence O’Toole hosted the Kelly-Miller Circus presented by John Ringling North. I have known people who have worked for many a year with that circus troop. Today, the show is managed by one of their former performers. It was a real treat to have the circus here despite animal-rights protesters parading near the entrance to our parking lot. It was also a thrill for me to help in the introducing of the show. It was also a thrill to just show-off some of the very limited skill I have in balancing small objects on my index finger – of course, the clown was trying to get me to balance a broomstick on my chin (show-off!).

Before coming here back in 2008, I had been a regular participant in the United States Catholic Conference of Bishops (USCCB) Office of Migrants and Itinerant Workers conference in Sarasota, Florida. And I had been attending since January of 2001 (just 4 months before my ordination to priesthood). In essence, our branch of that office was responsible for the souls who worked in circuses, carnivals, and auto racing (Indy-cars, not NASCAR). It even expanded to ministry for bull riding and other extreme sports. My concentration was on ministering to the circus (as you may have guessed by now). My friend was actually a performer in the circus for some years and also a promoter before entering other professional lives and eventually to the priesthood – hence, my connection.

Over the years, I have had a trapeze lesson, deaconed and celebrated Mass at the United Center, introduced a few shows, including one from the shoulders of an elephant, and learned many other things like the balancing act. I have met “circus royalty” including Mr. North and a few of the great Flying Wallendas family. I’ve even baptized a baby after an evening show in the center of a ring. However, when I think of everything I had seen and done, there are not many other days so memorable as to have been told of a young performer’s fall from above the ring, resulting in her death – during a show. I may not have been there for the show, but we had just been with her and her family a week or so before. Her two children were in final preparations for receiving their first communion. We were devastated. I still cannot fathom what the people at the show felt, let alone the children that were in attendance.

The commonality of nearly every person and performer I just mentioned is their status as migrants. Many of their parents and grandparents came from Europe, Asia, or Central and South America. And that was just the circuses. Quite a few of the carnival workers are migrants, some of the auto racers and other sports are, too. Some of my friends in the ministry are very good friends of Mario Andretti’s family as well as Dario Franchitti’s (who used to be married to Ashley Judd – just saying). Another very important commonality of these people is their faith. They are not all Catholic, but they tend to all realize that they need God or some divine authority. We may not have all of the different religions figured out, but the performers and their families are just amazing, never looking at the color of someone else’s skin or judging another’s faith.

Migrants and immigrants are hot topics nowadays. The sad truth is that it’s a very small percentage of migrants who are ever given a chance. Keep them all in your prayers.

Happy Epiphany, Fr. Mike

Our MANNA program this Christmas season has been a wonderful success! We are continuing this easy and FREE

fundraising program. We will be in the back of Church each weekend with Cash & Carry cards, and we will be placing an order every week, resuming Monday, January 9. So, remember, we all NEED to eat, we all drive or ride in cars, we sometimes eat out, our family and friends have birthdays…..the list goes on and on….The possibilities are endless. So, please remember to use our Manna program, because like we said before Christmas, it is a no stress, easy, and most of all, profitable program for our Parish that doesn’t cost you anything extra. REMEMBER: Everyone needs to grocery shop, we all use gasoline in our cars, there are always birthdays and other special occasions to celebrate—GIFT CARDS help keep us all on budget - if you don’t have a gift card, you don’t purchase it—also they make AWESOME gifts! Why not give MANNA a try? You have nothing to lose, and the Parish benefits from every purchase! Any questions about Manna, please stop at the MANNA table at the back of Church or call the Parish

Office anytime Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM—4:00 PM. Please remember Manna orders are due to the Parish Office by 9:00 AM on Monday morning. UPCOMING MANNA ORDER SCHEDULE: January 9, January 23, February 6, February 20.

The Saint Lawrence O’Toole Book Club will meet in the Parish Office on Monday, January 23, at 4:00 PM.. Everyone is invited to attend for a lively, interesting, fun discussion of our current book: Riverine: A Memoir from Anywhere But Here by Angela Palm. Bring a friend! This is a memoir of place, young

love, social classes, and life-altering crime told by Angela Palm, who grew up in DeMotte, Indiana. The story is told through a collection of interconnected essays and looks at how and why lives diverge. Her community battled the flooding Kankakee River every year. From afar, she fell in love with a neighbor boy and imagined a life with him. She wanted more than her small town offered, and she escaped the confining environment. As an adult, Angela is drawn back. In addition to recalling memories of the place, she tries to understand her family. She visits the prison where the boy from her past is serving a life sentence for committing a brutal murder. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

January 8, 2017 - Epiphany:

Today we celebrate the feast of the Epiphany, where the Magi find the newborn king and offer him gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.

In the spirit of the Magi, please put your gift in the St. Vincent de Paul Poor Box so that comfort and peace can once again be given to a newborn child.

Just a reminder from the Pastor Again thank you to all who have pledged to the “To Teach Who Christ Is” Capital Campaign. Thanks to your contributions and our parish’s 60% of the collected funds so far, we were able to get some of the sidewalk done between the church and towards the parking lot. Due to the colder temperatures, we decided to lay the new walks in sections, but we will resume that work once the weather breaks. I promise. As a friendly reminder, please do not send your pledges to the church nor place them in the collection basket. If you have not received your reminder envelopes yet, please send your pledge payments directly to: To Teach Who Christ Is Archdiocese of Chicago PO Box 7256 Kensington, CT 06037 Thank you for your continued generosity! God Bless, Father Mike

Living Stewardship January 8, 2017 Epiphany of Our Lord “Then they opened their treasures and offered him gifts of

gold, frankincense, and myrrh.” MATTHEW 2:11 The image of the Magi kneeling before the infant Jesus and opening their treasure chests for Him is an image that we should all try to follow all year long. In gratitude for all that we have been given, we are called to generously share all of our gifts, not just the ones we pick and choose. God wants us to be the most generous with that one thing that means the most to us.

STEWARDSHIP PRAYER A Prayer for Vision Author Unknown

Disturb us, Lord, when we are too well pleased with ourselves; when our dreams have come true because we have dreamed too little; when we arrived safely because we have sailed too close to shore. Disturb us, Lord, when with the abundance of the things we possess, we have lost our thirst

for the

water of life. Stir us, Lord, to dare more boldly, to venture on wider seas, where storms will show your mastery; where losing sight of land, we shall find the stars. We ask you to push back the horizons of our hopes and to push us into the future in strength, courage, hope and love. Amen. PLANNED GIVING Remember St. Lawrence O’Toole in your estate plans. Reflecting on God’s Word They were men in love with the lights of night—astrologers, star-gazers, meaning-makers tuned in to the signs in the heavens, as Matthew tells it. A strange star moving across the sky led them into Israel. Arriving in Jerusalem, they

asked where the newborn king of the Jews was, so they could offer homage. Herod was less than delighted, indeed “greatly troubled, and all Jerusalem with him,” at hearing of a new king on the block (Matthew 2:3). But he assembled the chief priests and the scribes, who remembered that the prophet Micah had proclaimed that the Messiah would be born in Bethlehem. So they set out again, with Herod’s duplicitous request whispered into their ears. The star reappeared and led them to the house where the child and his mother were. Falling down in worship, they offered gifts, and went back home. End of story—as we like to remember it. Of course, that is not the end. Receiving no word, Herod is enraged and orders the death of all children under the age of two. Joseph, Mary, and the child flee to Egypt. Power does not welcome competition, even in the form of a child. But God wills all people to know salvation. Jesus came to draw all into the reign of God and to empower them to live the God-life that is the Father’s gift. The darkness of evil continues to threaten but it will not overcome as long as there are those who seek the light, follow it, and allow it to lead them to the child.

Living God’s Word We pray that the light of God’s love, shown to us in Jesus Christ and placed within us with the gift of faith, may lead others to this same faith. We also pray that we may continue our own journey into the mystery of God and find Christ waiting for us at journey’s end.
