For example, if we start a new job or enter into a new relationship or take on a particular challenge, we become nervous. We may doubt whether God will be there for us. Yet those doubts can be the opportunity for us to understand God more, to come to a more comprehensive way of experiencing God who loves unconditionally, in sickness and in health. Doubt is not necessarily the sign that we are losing our faith; instead, doubt can lead us to grow in our faith journey. Although the apostles doubted the presence of the risen Lord, Jesus sent them out to preach the gospel. Perhaps, our doubts can challenge our weak faith and brings us to much more enduring faith that will send us out to evangelize in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. A Reflection from the desk of the Pastor…May 24, 2020 The Ascension of the Lord

We celebrate the Ascension of the Lord on Thursday of the Sixth Week of Easter. It marks the fortieth day after Jesus rose from death. As we know, there are different significances to the number of days found in the Bible and the Church's liturgy. Initially, the early Church celebrated the fifty

days of Easter to Pentecost as a whole. It was not until the fourth century that the Feast of the Ascension marked the fortieth day after Jesus rose from death, and then the fiftieth day was marked by Pentecost to close the Easter season.

The solemnity of Ascension celebrates the completion of the work of our salvation. It stresses the pledge of our glorification with Christ and His entry into heaven with our human nature glorified. Ascension does not mark the end of Jesus' relationship with his Church. Instead, it marks the beginning of a new relationship with the world—in and through the Church. Thus, the Feast of Ascension invites Christians to reflect on the person of Jesus and who we are empowered to become in him. Ascension helps us see Pentecost as the breath of God on the Church and unto every member of the Church.

The gospel reading for Ascension Day describes the disciples' experience of the glory of the risen Lord and the mission to recreate the earth. When the disciples saw him, they worshiped him, but they also doubted the experience. The question is: How is it possible to disbelieve in such circumstances? How does one doubt in the presence of the risen Lord? But we all do it, when we begin a new phase in our life, it can be frightening and we doubt if we could sustain it.

Call to Worship

Good morning and welcome to the Sacred Heart Church website or electronic version of the bulletin. Alleluia He is risen! Today as we celebrate Jesus returning to his rightful place at the right hand of the Father, may we remember that he came and shed his blood for our eternal freedom. This week we also remember those who shed their blood and paid the ultimate sacrifice for our political freedom. Freedom is never free, but paid for by those brave men and women who believe that God desires us to have the freedom to choose. During this difficult time when some see our rights of freedom being challenged, take the time to think about the difference in freedom and cooperation...ask yourself, if wearing a mask that gives comfort to someone who has a compromised immune system or illness an infringement on your right or a compromise? If you see people gathering, you have a the choice to go in the other direction. So do you really need to condemn them? If someone goes down the wrong way in the grocery store aisle, why not just smile and stay on the other side as you pass. We have the freedom to chose patience, kindness and tolerance; they are the gifts Jesus taught us so that we can be a sign to others that God is good all the time!-Joan

On Monday, May 18, 2020, the following information was received from the Diocese office Pastoral Services and Office of Worship:

Dear Priests and Deacons of the Diocese of Belleville,

This is just a brief note to follow up on the letter that Bishop Braxton sent on May 13 announcing that in consultation with the Bishops of the Province of Chicago, we are slowly implementing a plan to reopen our churches and to return to active liturgical life in our parishes.

While we are working in accord with all the dioceses in the Province, the Bishops realize that the implementation will happen at slightly different speeds in each diocese and even in each parish. A packet of information from the newly formed diocesan Reopening of Churches Task Group is being sent. These resources will help you better understand the first steps your parish needs to take before the church doors are open and we resume public participation in the sacramental life of the Catholic Church in the Diocese of Belleville.

In the meantime, please be patient and go slowly with your plans. There may be some people who will be afraid to return to church for fear of contagion. We need to reestablish our trust with them. The only way we can do that is to keep them safe. We will keep our parishioner’s update!

Updates from the Office of the Bishop

The Ordination of Rev. Mr. Nicholas T. Flemming, Rev. Mr. Carl E. Schrage and Rev. Mr. Joel L. Seipp is scheduled for Saturday, July 11, 2020 at 10:30 a.m. in Belleville at the Cathedral of St. Peter.

The blessing of the Sacred Chrism Oil and the celebration of the Priest’s Ordination Anniversaries will also take place at this mass. Unfortunately the Mass of Thanksgiving for married couples, scheduled for June 7th will be cancelled. The Cabinet is looking into alternative dates to reschedule the celebrations commemorating the 50th anniversary of Bishop Braxton’s Ordination and the 25th anniversary of his Consecration and 15th anniversary of his Installation. More information will follow. It is Bishop Braxton’s hope that these events will be open to the public, but will be revisited as necessary.

Memorial Day

May each of us remember all those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. The freedom we enjoy has never been free, but paid by the blood of the brave. Also remember the families who also share in the price. The practice of honoring those who lost their lives in battle goes back thousands of years, noted by the

ancient Greeks and Romans. May we join together and pray…. God of power and mercy, you destroy war and put down earthly pride. Banish violence from our midst and wipe away our tears, that we may all deserve to be called your sons and daughters. Keep in your mercy those men and women who have died in the cause of freedom and bring them safely into your kingdom of justice and peace. We ask this though Jesus Christ our Lord. R/. The Ascension of Christ, what does it mean to our faith?

This Sunday, we celebrate the Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord. We profess our faith in this glorious mystery when we say in the Nicene Creed: He ascended into heaven and  is seated at the right hand of the Father. We believe that Jesus’ earthly life reached its culmination when He passed from this world to the Father. He no longer belongs to the world of corruption and death that conditions our earthly life. He passed into the glorified state in God. Todayscatholic.org May 27, 2014

This week, May 24th, you will have the opportunity to help others, here and around the world, connect to Christ through the internet, radio,

television and printed media. Fifty percent (50%) of the funds collected remain in the Belleville Diocese to fund local communication efforts. Your support helps spread the Gospel message! To learn more, visit: www.usccb.org/ccc.
