Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time ~ September 2, 2018 Twenty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time ~ September 9, 2018

Be Bold ~ Be Catholic

Our Annual Mass for Victims/Survivors of Abuse and for Reparation in our Diocese

Two years ago, I inaugurated an annual Mass for victims of sexual abuse and for reparation for the sins of abusers. For many reasons, that was a powerful “moment of prayer” across our Diocese, as we were united in a special way on that day.

I chose the day for our Masses to be the memorial of Our Lady of Sorrows. It seems fitting, as we pray for victims and reparation, that we would turn to Our Lady, Patroness of our Diocese, for such a commemoration. Her title as Lady of Sorrows reminds us that she accompanies us in our times of trial, and helps by her prayers to unite us with her Son in his Passion. I decided to set the date for the annual Mass on the Thursday closest to 15 September. This year, therefore, the Masses across the Diocese will be celebrated on Thursday, 13 September. Though it is the memorial of St. John Chrysostom, it is permitted for us to celebrate instead a votive Mass in honour of Our Lady of Sorrows. Therefore, I reiterate the following directions as in the past: There is to be one Mass in every parish, parish cluster, or family of parishes on 13 September.

This year our one Mass for our Catholic Family of Parishes in Norfolk on Thursday, September 13 7:00pm will be at Our Lady, Queen of Martyrs Church in Delhi. Please join us!

A Heartfelt Response to Pope Francis’ Letter to the People of God

The stories of children and adults being abused by priests echo with immense pain and loss. There is an ache from the betrayal of the deepest kind. The wounds have left scars that won’t go away. Let me say one thing. I am sorry. I am sorry for your suffering. I am sorry for your tears cried. I am sorry for the silence that roared in the night, waiting to break through. IT SHOULDN’T HAVE HAPPENED.

We cannot undo it. We cannot fix it. But maybe we can all try again. Try to trust.

Try to believe. Try to allow hope to seep into the cracks.

Dear parishioners and friends, Well summer is over, school is back and many of us are returning to our usual busy schedules. Our parishes are beginning with many meetings, social activities and opportunities for faith growth. This past Thursday, August 30, we had an important meeting with the Family of Parishes Pastoral Council, some of the Parish Team, Deacons and their wives and the leaders from our ‘small faith sharing groups’ that met in the homes. Our discussion involved planning for this fall, what to do to meet our needs in faith development, catechesis, teaching and faith sharing. Some of our ‘small faith sharing groups’ have asked to continue, so we need to find a program that meets their needs. The results of this meeting will be in our next bulletin. One idea that we are looking at is the program called Alpha. A simple explanation of Alpha: a small group of people gather to share a meal (usually Pot Luck). This follows with a teaching via video and some faith sharing on the teaching. This would be a 11 to 15 week gatherings. Please keep us in your prayers as we discern God’s will for our parishes. On the lighter side. I, Fr. Alan played golf this past Sunday with the Simcoe-Waterford Knights of Columbus. I asked the parishioners at Sunday Mass at St. Mary’s and St. Cecilia’s, this August 25 and 26 for their prayers, so I could be calm and not use inappropriate language. Your prayers worked. THANK YOU! Some important Meetings coming up!

From Ian Duckworth , Family & Youth Worker

I know summer is a busy time for many families and this Catholic Family of Parishes is no exception! I want-

ed to take this opportunity to share about what God's been doing and the fruits of everyone's support with

the young people of Our Catholic Family of Parishes here in Norfolk!

Steubenville Toronto: The Holy Spirit is always present at these conferences and anyone can check out the

videos online here: https://steubenvilleconferences.com/youth/tor/ and catch a small glimpse at what our

young people experience each year. Friday July 13th we left and the group we took this year was so open.

It's so awesome being on the front lines and see God working in the hearts of our young people. THANK

YOU FOR YOUR PRAYERS! You can check out the Facebook page for some of the video taken during the

conference as well.

Summer Bible Camps: This is truly a blessing to be a part of - and I do mean just a small part. With so many

willing to pitch in and bring the gospel in a child-friendly way to our youngest generation, it's impossible not

to be so grateful to all of you. THANK YOU to all those who donated supplies and to all of the staff that made

the camps run so smoothly - it is thanks to you that the young people of our parishes and their families had

seeds of faith planted and/or grown in their hearts this summer. One parent shared their summer planning

process with the staff saying that they tried to encourage their daughter to register in three or four other

camps, but only wanted to attend the Summer Bible Camp.

This is so exciting because it's not the sole responsibility of the youth ministry team to keep families coming

to church, but an entire parish community that welcomes and supports our young people and their families.

Our efforts are transformed into success thanks to all of you who make the Catholic Family of Parishes feel

like such a comfortable and safe place for families, so once again THANK YOU!
