Christ the Lord is risen today!

Charles Wesley’s great hymn for Easter:

Continued overleaf

Jesus’s death on the cross, and His resurrection on Easter morning are both part of the redemption story. Paul links them in this way: ‘He was delivered for our offences [the Cross] and raised again [the Resurrection] for our justification’ (Romans 4:25). Charles Wesley does likewise in his glorious Easter anthem.Christ the Lord is risen today! Sons of men and angels say.Raise your songs and triumph high Sing, ye heavens, thou earth reply.Charles wrote the hymn in 1739, a year after his Pentecost Sunday evangelical conversion, and the year in which he began his open-air

preaching. Like all his hymns that followed in the next four decades, this hymn is full of New Testament references and allusions. A great stone was rolled into the opening of the grave where Jesus was laid, and as Matthew records, the Jewish authorities ‘made the tomb secure, sealing the stone and setting a guard’ (27:66). But all to no purpose! Christ, the Lord of Life, could not be imprisoned by death!Vain the stone, the watch, the sealChrist hath burst the gates of hell.Death in vain forbids Him riseChrist hath opened Paradise! The NT teaches that Christ’s resurrection was the Father’s seal of approval on His obedient life and atoning death. His resurrection was the proof that He was indeed Jesus Christ the Lord, as Paul argues in Romans 1:4. ‘Declared to be the Son of God …by the resurrection from the dead.’ Charles Wesley works these great salvation truths into his verses. ‘Love’s redeeming work is done.’ ‘Once He died our souls to save.’ ‘Lives again our glorious King.’ ‘Where, O death, is now thy sting?’ ‘Second life we all receive.’ In our Heavenly Adam live.’ As

our Lord promised His disciples long ago – and still promises us; ‘Because I live, you will also live’ (John 14:19).The Resurrection of Christ, viewed as a historical fact, is only part of the NT teaching. His conquest of death He now shares with all His people. Christians are the people of the Resurrection! We are now ‘made alive with Christ;’ ‘raised up with Him,’ and already seated ‘in heavenly places’ (Ephesians 1:4-6). And Charles Wesley takes up this great theme of how believers share in their Lord’s resurrection power.Risen with Him we upward moveStill we seek the things above …

Soar we now where Christ hath led

Following our exalted Head.Made like Him, like Him we riseOurs the cross, the grave, the

skies. Christ has conquered hell!Death has lost its sting! The grave is spoiled! What a Saviour! What a gospel! What a glorious hope!

8 The Parishioner – April 2019

Introduction . . .A lot has happened since I was writing the last Session Report for the March Parishioner! To say it has been a busy time is definitely an understatement, but I am confident things will settle down in the coming months as new arrangements are in place and embedded. The main headlines for me:

Sunday 17th MarchMark’s final service at St Mary’s took place on the 17th March, as anticipated. This was a very emotional time for folks and definitely the end of an era. The service was beautifully conducted, as we have learned to expect – and also very appropriate for the occasion – thank you Mark.We also had the opportunity to catch up over “coffee and cake” after the service and present Mark with his leaving gift. Folks had been contributing to a gift over the previous couple of weeks and thanks to your generosity we collected over £2,000! This allowed us to give two gifts – a short luxury break for Mark and Audrey (when they can find the time), as well as money to purchase a desk for the study in the new manse.

Glasgow CathedralBy the time the Parishioner is available for distribution, Mark’s

Service of Induction to the Cathedral will have taken place. This was on Thursday 4th April and as two buses were arranged for us, I know St Mary’s was well represented on the evening! We convey our very best wishes to Mark and all of the family as they move into this exciting new chapter.

Church Officer17th March was also Margaret’s last Sunday as our Church Officer, after 20 years of dedicated service! I can report that Margaret is coping admirably with the change, although I suspect that the majority of any free time this has generated will quickly be taken up with “Gran” duties!!I am delighted that Paul Malcolm has been appointed to the role of Church Officer. Paul has started already, with his duties initially limited to Sunday mornings, but he will step up to the full duties when he retires from his current job next month. I wish Paul well in both his retirement and his new responsibilities at St Mary’s.

Session MeetingsWe had two Session Meetings in March, due to the increased activity as we prepared for Mark’s departure. We have managed to progress a lot of business during the month, and recognising the increased workload that we will experience, a number of appointments have been put in place. Charles Hay has been appointed to the role of Associate Session Clerk and as part of that role, Charles will have particular responsibility for our Stewardship Programme.Melissa McKenzie has also agreed to take on the role of Minute Clerk – principal duties will revolve around the administration of Session Meeting agendas and minutes.

Finally, John Pears is taking on the duties of “Facilities Coordinator”. The precise remit of the role has still to be developed with John, but it will include responsibility for the use of our premises, implementing the hall lets process and maximising the benefit we receive from this valuable resource.I am very grateful to Charles, Melissa and John for accepting these responsibilities. Equally, I appreciate all of the support that is being offered at this very busy time. Thank you.

Two further significant appointments for us - Firstly, Ian Taylor will be our Interim Moderator during our vacancy. Ian is Minister at Springfield Cambridge Parish Church in Bishopbriggs (One of Mark’s new neighbours!). We will have the opportunity to meet Ian on the 28th April, when he will lead us in Worship. Taking on the role of Interim Moderator is a significant commitment on Ian’s part. As a Kirk Session, we are grateful to Ian and we look forward to working with him.Secondly, we have also been speaking to Morris Dutch, with a view to appointing him as our Locum Minister. Many folks will remember Morris, as he was our Locum Minister before Mark joined us in 2001. The paperwork has not been finalised yet, but it is hoped that Morris will be with us from the beginning of May.

Moving ForwardI appreciate that my report is a lot longer than usual – this reflects the amount of activity that is going on at the moment. These are all things that are moving us forward and it feels like a very positive place to be, as we look to our future at St Mary’s.

Kind RegardsGordon Morrison, Session Clerk

Nursery NewsI am delighted to let you know that we received our sixth Green Flag award this week! This is a tremendous achievement for our nursery. The feedback we received was very encouraging

saying that our application was wonderful and that supporting information was excellent. Indeed, Eco Schools Scotland have asked if they can use some of our supporting material on their social media! Congratulations to everyone in the nursery and thanks to members of the congregation who help us with our eco work.We took part in Waste Week during March when we highlighted the importance of reducing waste to save our environment. A Plastic Waste Audit was undertaken by our children and their families. We were also learning about Spring and the changes this season brings to our environment. We spent time in the garden planting bulbs and will be watching them grow over the coming weeks. A group of children attended a trip to the Glasgow Resource Centre for a Fairy Tales and Dragons during the last week of term.Oor Wullie’s BIG Bucket Trail is a nationwide public art trail, where over 200 life-sized Oor Wullie Sculptures will take to the streets of Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Dundee and Inverness to raise awareness and funds for children’s hospitals across Scotland. As well as the large sculptures which are on the trail, there are a number of mini sculptures. One of our children has been selected by Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity to receive one of the mini sculptures. The nursery children have to decorate the sculpture and then it will be displayed on the trail. Look out for our mini sculpture over the summer months (perhaps share a selfie with us??!!) Open Doors – An Update

We have held four open doors days so far and they have all been successful and worth doing. We have received visitors on all occasions, mostly non-church members, but also lots of our own people dropped in to see us. All are made welcome and offered tea / coffee and a biscuit. Some like to be guided round the church having a few things pointed out to them (to do everything is a little overwhelming) and many say they will come back to do more. Others like to wander on their own with our information sheet and some just like to sit and chat. So far, we have managed to have enough volunteers for all our openings and they have all found the experience pleasant as well as worthwhile. Often visitors arrive with their own stories about St Mary’s from when they were children, or their parents or grandparents attended the church. Sales of souvenirs have been slow but steady and we have almost covered our costs. We would still like to have some more volunteers and the signing on sheet is in vestibule each Sunday. We will be open the first Wednesday in every month and we hope to make some of these Wednesdays ‘special’ We look forward to seeing many of you either as volunteers or visitors over the next few months. You will always be made welcome and there is tea / coffee and a biscuit for everyone.

Nursery News Our pre-school children returned to nursery on 15th August and we welcomed our new starts during week beginning 20th. I’m sure they will all have a fun filled year with lots to learn and explore! We welcomed back our Head of Centre, Joanne MacDonald, who has returned from maternity leave. As Joanne is expecting her second baby, she will start maternity leave again on 20th September. We wish her well as she becomes a mum again! This session the H of C will have three management days and two days

May I remind the leaders of organisations that it is their responsibility to ensure all lights are switched off before leaving. Apart from unnecessary use of power it could be a potential fire risk.

He was the Messiah come to his own people in their capital city, and yet he came in humility, riding on a young donkey, not in triumph, riding on a war-horse.

As Jesus entered the city, the crowds gave him a rapturous welcome, throwing palm fronds into his path. They knew his reputation as a healer and welcomed him. But sadly the welcome was short-lived and shallow, for Jerusalem would soon reject her Messiah, and put him to death. On this day churches worldwide will distribute little crosses made from palm fronds in memory of Jesus’ arrival in Jerusalem.

GOOD FRIDAY: the day the Son of God died for you Good Friday is the day on which Jesus died on the cross. He was crucified at 9am in the morning, and died six hours later, at 3pm. It is the most solemn day in the Christian year and is widely marked by the removal of all decorations from churches. In Lutheran churches, the day was marked by the reading of the passion narrative in a gospel, a practice which lies behind the ‘passions’ composed by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685 – 1750). Both the St Matthew Passion and the St John Passion have their origins in this observance of Good Friday. The custom of observing a period of three hours’ devotion from 12 midday to 3 pm on Good Friday goes back to the 18th century. The ‘Three Hours of the Cross’ often take the form of an extended meditation on the ‘Seven Last Words from the Cross’, with periods of silence, prayer, or hymn-singing. Jesus’ appearances after His Resurrection The following list of witnesses may help you put all those references in order…. Mary Magdalene Mark 16:9-11; John 20:10-18 Other women at the tomb Matthew 28:8-10 Peter in Jerusalem Luke 24:34; 1 Corinthians 15:5 The two travellers on the road Mark 16:12,13 10 disciples behind closed doors Mark 16:14; Luke 24:36-43; John 20:19-25 11 disciples WITH Thomas John 20:26-31; 1 Corinthians 15:5 7 disciples while fishing John 21:1-14 11 disciples on the mountain Matthew 28:16-20 A crowd of 500 1 Corinthians 15:6 Jesus’ brother – James 1 Corinthians 15:7 Those who saw the Ascension Luke 24:44-49; Acts 1:3-8 Easter prayer of thanks Gracious, loving Father, Thank you for the wonderful reality of Jesus’ resurrection on that first Easter Day. Thank you that, because Jesus is alive, life has meaning and purpose. When we don’t understand why some things happen, when life is difficult, when we are struggling through pain and loss, help us to know your risen presence and love in our lives.

The ParishionerCopy for the May Parishioner should be handed to Sandra Burns, left in the

Publications pigeon hole in the Hall vestibule, or sent by e-mail to [email protected] no later than Sunday 28 April.

Visitors are welcome St Mary’s is a sit anywhere Church and visitors are always welcome. If you feel there should be more to life than retail therapy and Friday night clubbing, try coming along to the 11 o’clock service on Sunday morning. You may hear something to change how you value your life and your relationships with those around you. You don’t have to join up to join in.

The Church office is located on the right as you enter the Church Halls. The secretary, Mrs Margaretann Dougall, is available in the office Monday to Friday 8.30 a.m. – 12.30 a.m. and may be the first point of contact for general enquiries. Margaretann will be able to refer you to the person best suited to respond. Church office telephone 0141 775 1166 or e-mail: [email protected]

The Parishioner OnlineMissed or lost your copy of the Parishioner ... why not go to www.stmaryskirkintilloch.org.uk and see this month’s copy.

Stephen McKean, Webmaster, has built up previous issues online so you can look back on past copies. Also if you wish any news or information to be put on the website over the summer months please e-mail [email protected] and we will

put these on the News page of the website.

16 The Parishioner – April 2019

Page 18: Parishioner The - WordPress.com · March 10 Honor Sarah Doreen Fleming, daughter of Kenneth and Yvonne The Lord bless you, and keep you: the Lord make his face to shine upon you,

My dear Nephew DarrenMy generous offer to take last week’s marriage service for you in your church, so that you could attend your weekend plumbing course, proved most unwise. You may now be qualified to unblock church hall kitchen sinks, but I will not be taking another marriage ceremony for you again, no matter how much you have set your heart on that electrician’s course next year, so that you can re-wire the vestry.

At first, I was delighted when the bride’s mother called, inviting me to the reception. I assumed that somewhere called Charnley Hall would be a most fitting location, full of oak floors and waiters bearing sherry to guests. I did not realise until too late that it is only the rather dubious pub next door to your church.

At least I had been placed with the happy couple and both sets of parents. Then it slowly dawned on me: I was there to stop the bride’s mother from attacking her newly-acquired son-in-law. My presence may have kept an uneasy peace at our table, but it had no such effect on some of the others.

Well before the speeches, bride’s and groom’s supporters were exchanging snide remarks and bitter looks. Then all hell broke loose: a bridesmaid slapped an usher and burst into tears.

That was the starting signal for the liveliest wedding reception I have ever attended: chairs were knocked about, plates broken, wedding cake thrown, flowers snapped in two, and memorable insults exchanged. Of course, I could cope with all that, but then someone snatched the bottle of champagne that had been placed in front of me. They were going to waste it by breaking it on someone’s head. I knew then that things had gone far enough.

It took but an instant for me to leap to my feet, lean over the table, and try and grab my bottle back. Unfortunately, that was when the police arrived. Were our churchwarden, Lord Jelleby to have been on the bench that day, matters could have been settled quite amicably. It was not to be: you may enthusiastically pass the peace in your church; I am now bound over to keep it.

Your loving uncle, Eustace
