IhavebeenrewardedwithpersonalchangeandlifelongfriendshipsbyservingasPresidentoftheJuniorLeagueofShreveport-Bossier.Thisexperiencehasgivenmeperspective: Itmaybetruethatnoonepersoncansolvealltheworld’sproblems,butwhateachofuscandoismakethatlittlecorneroftheworldwherewelivejustalittlebitbetter.IlookatmylifeandknowIhavesomuchtogivebacktothiscommunitytomakeitasafeandproductiveplaceforallpeople.Itismydutyasaparenttoteachmychildrenoftheirresponsibilitytomaketheworld—theirworld—abetterplace.

Thisexperiencehasalsogivenmepotential: Volunteeringistheperfectvehicletodiscoversomethingnewaboutourselvesanddevelopnewskills.Itisnevertoolatetolearn.IamcontinuallyamazedatwhattheLeagueteachesmeandthegiftsIcanofferthecommunitybecauseofthetrainingIreceivedduringmyyearsofservice.

LastyearattheMayDinnermeeting,Iendedwithachallenge… Be changed by 2012! Iencourageeachofyoutolookbackovertheyearandconsiderhowyouhavebeenchanged.Thesearemyhopesforyouryear:

• youmetafewgoodfriends • youfeltconnectedtothisLeague,itsmissionandthecommunityandwere

determinedtomakeaunique,lastingandvaluablecontribution • youdevelopedanewskill • youchangedthecommunitybychangingyourself • youtriedsomethingyouhaveneverdonebefore • youfeltappreciatedforyourservice • youcommittedyourselftothecauseandnottherequirements • youhadfun • andfinally,bythisdate,werepurposedthisLeagueintosomethingbetter

WhileIhavenothadtheopportunitytospeakwitheachoneofyouthisyear,Ihavebeenfortunatetoservewithyouinthispowerfulorganizationwhichprovidesustheopportunitytogiveandgrowunderadynamicandunifyingmissionofchange.Ihavelearnedsomuchfromobservingyou,andItreasurethemeaningfulrelationshipsIhavemade.YOUarethemostrewardingaspectofmyyearasPresident.Iwillalwaysbeinspiredbyyourdedicationandstrengthofheart.

Iwanttoleaveyouwithonelastthought… Aconnectioncaninspiresomethingbiggerthanourselves. Becomeconnectedtothisorganization—thisgroupofwomencommittedtopromotingvolunteerism,developingtheirpotentialandimprovingtheircommunity—andendeavortomakealastingchangeinyourlifeandthelivesofothersaroundyou.

A Milestone Worth CelebratingBy: Shelly Stone, President

Whileplanningfortheyearahead,Ihavebeenthinkingalotaboutourpast,presentandfuture.ThiscomingLeagueyear,wewillcelebrateour80thanniversary.Ican’thelpbutthinkhowdifferentourcitywouldbewithoutthetirelesseffortsofthemanywomenwhohaveservedandtrainedwiththeJuniorLeagueofShreveport-Bossier.

Thethreadsofourpast,presentandfutureareconstantlyinterwoven.Theservicesourmembershipprovides—playingbingowithhospitalizedchildren,readingtoschoolchildren,orteachingthemaboutnutrition—andthetrainingwereceivearetheresultoftheeffortsofeachvolunteerwhocamebeforeus.

Thoseninety-eightyoungwomenwhoin1930metinSt.Mark’sParishHalltoformtheJuniorServiceLeague,whichbecametheJuniorLeagueofShreveportin1933,hadnoideathat80yearslaterwewouldbecelebratingoneaward-winningcookbook(andtwoothersthathavesoldmorethan175,000copies)orutilizingourwebsite,email,andFacebooktocommunicatewithourmembers,thecommunity,andacrossthecountry.Nottomentionthatourorganizationwouldgrowtomorethan800timesits1930size!IoftenwonderwhattheJuniorLeagueofShreveport-Bossierwilllooklikewhenwecelebrateour100thanniversaryin2033.

Ofcourse,ournostalgiaforthepastandourhopeforthefuturedonotlessenourgoalsfortoday.TheJuniorLeagueofShreveport-Bossierisanorganizationofwomencommittedtopromotingvoluntarism,developingthepotentialofwomen,andimprovingcommunitiesthroughtheeffectiveactionandleadershipoftrainedvolunteers.

Duringour80thyearwewillcontinuetheworkofthewomenwhopavedthetrailbeforeusbyutilizingourmissiontoachieveourgoals.

Goal #1:Makecertainthatourmembersnotonlyknowourmission,butalsoknowhowweimplementthemissionineveryproject,fundraiser,program,training,andplacementtheJuniorLeagueofShreveport-Bossierproduces.

Goal #2:Celebrateour80thyear!Inthenearfutureeachmemberwillreceiveinformationonour80x80Challenge.Inhonorofthe80thAnniversaryoftheJuniorLeagueofShreveport-Bossier,allmembersarechallengedtogiveatleast80hoursofcommunityserviceand$80totheLeagueduringthe2012-2013year.

Goal #3:HelptoensuretheviabilityoftheJuniorLeagueofShreveport-Bossierforanothereightyyears.Soonwewillannounceour80thAnniversaryProjectwhichwillraisemoneyforarestrictedaccount;wehopethiswillbeasteptosecurethefinancialviabilityoftheLeague.Inaddition,webelievethe80thAnniversaryProjectwillimproveourcommunityandmakealastingimpactthatwillbeenjoyedforgenerationstocome.

Iwillbehonoredtocelebratethismilestonewiththesustainingmembers,activemembers,andthe2012-2013provisionalclass.TheJuniorLeagueisfortunatetohaveaveryexperienced,capableleadershipteamwhichwillworkhardtoachievethegoalsofour80thyear.MyhopeisthatduringthiscelebrationtherewillbecauseforyoutothinkaboutyourownJuniorLeagueexperience,whatbroughtyoutotheLeague,andwhyyouremain.MostofallIhopeyouwillfeelastrongconnectionwithourhistoryandwhytheeffortsofthosecivic-mindedwomenin1933arestillrelevanttoday!

Ifyouarereadingthis,itmeansyouareamember,partner,sponsor,orsomeonewhohasaninterestintheJuniorLeagueofShreveport-Bossier,andforthat,Ithankyou.Yoursupporthassustainedusfor80years,andpropelsustowardourcentennialwhichwillbeherebeforeweknowit.

What you hope to contribute this year:Ihopetobeabletoshoweverymemberhowveryimportanthertalentsandserviceare-nomatterwhatherplacement.Everyone’sjobisimportanttofulfillingthemissionoftheJuniorLeagueandeveryplacementoffersagrowthopportunity.

Message to Shelly:IamthrilledtoserveasPresident-ElectwithShelly.ThenexttwoyearswillcertainlybethemostchallengingofmyLeaguecareer,butIlookforwardtolearningfromsomeoneIviewasawonderfulrolemodelandmentor.Shelly,youaregenuine,honest,hard-working,ladylikeandthoughtful,andI'msoproudtohavetheopportunitytolearnfromyou.

AsIreflectbackontheeventswehavebeenapartofforDoneInADay(DIAD),IcannothelpbutsmilewhenIthinkofourlastplacementattheVolunteersofAmericaVeterans(VOA)TransitionalLivingprogram.TheDIADmembersweretaskedtohelptheVeteransplantavegetablegarden.TheseVeteransnotonlytakegreatprideinservinginthemilitarytoprotectourfreedom,butalsoinbuildingaself-sustainingsupplyoffoodforthemembersoftheirprogram.

TheVOAVeteransprogramisa56-bedtransitionalshelterthatprovidesfoodandshelterforhomeless,singlemen.Forsomeveterans,thetraumaofwarmakestheirtransitiontocivilianlifemorecomplicatedandtheyarenotpreparedforit.Throughastructuredprogramandindividualgoalsettingthemenaregiventhetoolstosuccessfullyreachindependence.Inaddition,familiesofveteranswhoareindangerofhomelessnesscanreceivetemporaryassistanceandcounseling

tohelpthemgetbackontheirfeet.Wehadtheprivilegeofmeetingmenwhohadbeenwiththeprogramforvaryinglengthsoftime,includingonemanwhowillsoongraduateandmoveonwithhislife.EachmanexpressedgratitudetotheVOAforhelpinghimcopewiththeperilsofwarandforteachinghimthenecessaryskillstobeasuccessfulmemberofourcommunity.

So,withmygardenglovesinhandandtheloomingraincloudsabove,Isetoutonanadventure.(AndIusethewordadventureforthisnon-gardener!)Leaningupagainstthecinderblockgardenswereseveralshovels,bagsofdirt,fertilizerandvegetableplants.AsItookinmysurroundings,IhadflashbacksofmychildhoodwhenmymotherandIhelpedmyauntplanthergardenonesummer.Iamstillwaitingfortheokratogrow,butaftertwentyyearsIdonotthinkit’sgoingtohappen.EachtimeIreturntomyaunt’shouseshetellsmewithasmileandalaughthatIwillnotbeplantingtheokra.So,withasmileandachuckle,IgreetedtheVeterans,grabbedashovelandjumpedrightintothegardens.Withamightyshoveofmyfootontheshovel,theearthbegantomove.Wetilledthedirtandcleanedoutweedstopreparethegardenfortheawaitingvegetables.IaskedwhatwewereplantingandtheVeteranssaidcucumbers,tomatoes,peppers,strawberriesandthatdreadedvegetable―okra.Iimmediatelystatedthatmyluckwithokrawasnon-existent.AndjustasIexpected,thelaughterandheadsshaking“no”started.Then,oneoftheVeterans

steppedupasIamsurehedidmanytimesduringhisservicewiththeUnitedStatesNavyandsaidhewouldplanttheokra.Withasighofrelief,Iwentbacktoplantingtomatoesandcucumbers.Innotimeatall,wehadeverythingbuttheokraplanted,which,tomydelight,wouldhavetowaituntilanotherdayasatillerwouldhavetobebroughtintogetthesoilready.Withourdirtygardengloves,muddytennisshoes,dirtyfromheadtotoeandthehumiditycreatingalittlebitofperspiration,wesatdownwithacolddrinkofwaterandadmiredourgardeningskills.TheVeteranswereextremelythankfulthatwegaveourtimeandmusclepowertohelpthemplantagardenthatwillfeedthemformonthstocome.

TheHealthLiteracyteamwaschargedwiththeprojectofeducatingthekindergartenclassesatMrs.EddieJonesWestShreveportElementarySchoolaboutphysicalactivity,nutrition,safetyanddentalawarenessovertheyear.TeammembersMaryEileenGrant,RachelFestavan,KariLaBorde,MeganPoljak,SaigeSolomonandIworkedwith55to65studentsateachofthefivesessionsandhadablastgettingtoknowthekidsandseethemgrowovertheschoolyear.

TheobesitystatisticsforLouisianaarestartling.Wehavethehighestrateofobesityinchildreninournationwith33%ofourchildrenrankinginthiscategory.PrincipalRubyScroggins“waswillingtodoanythingshecouldtohelpeducateherstudentsandtheirfamiliesaboutmakinghealthychoicesandbeingsafe,”andwelcomedthisnewproject.

InSeptember,wemetourpreciousKindergartenersandcompleteda

trainingIdesignedatthesurfacelevelofhealthandsafety.Thetrainingincludedtalkingabouthowourbodieswork,snackingwhilediscussinghealthychoicesandnutrition,makingselfportraitstotakehomeandshare,andplayinggamesforexercise.“SimonSays”wasunanimouslychosenastheirfavorite.

InOctober,weswitchedgearstotalkaboutdentalhealth.EmilySchaumburgcreatedthissessionwiththehelpofourveryownSustainerDr.MaureenFenton.Dr.Fentonwassoawesomewiththekidsandbroughtgoodiebagsintheshapeofteethcompletewithatoothbrush,toothpasteandflossforeachchild.Studentsmadetoothpuppetandafunsnack,andevenexperimentedwitheggstodemonstratetoothdecayandtheeffectsofgooddentalcareinprevention.

InJanuary,wetaughtStrangerDangerdesignedbySageSolomanandhadLieutenantEddieWalkerfromtheCentenaryCollegePoliceDepartmentastheguestspeaker.ThekidslovedlearningaboutgoodstrangersandbadstrangersandespeciallyLt.Walker’suseofwigsandsunglassesasprops.Studentspracticedtellingastranger“No,Iwon'tgo!”andfollowingprotocoltofindagrownup.Theyreceivedgoldbadgesandwhistlesjustincasetheyranintoastranger.

InFebruary,wesharedasessionorganizedbyRachelFestavanaboutgoingtothedoctor.HerLSUinternco-workerswereguests.Activitiesincludedmakingafruitpizza,learningmedicaltrivia,measuringandtakingbloodpressureand“Dr.DressUp,”whichincludedakitwithgloves,

booties,andmaskstotakehome.

InMarch,wesharedKariLaBorde'sWaterSafetyLessons.Therotationincludedmakinganartprojectcalledsinkorswimandasnack,goldfish“swimmers”ontopofgrahamcrackerswithbluewhipcream.Thechildrenalsoreceivedpacketofsafetyinformationtocolor.

Afterthelastsessionourteamcouldnotbelievehowmuchfunwehadandhowmuchthestudentshadchangedovertheyear.SaigeSolomonsharedherfavoritememory:“WhenwehadOfficerBoucherthereforStrangerDangerandweplayedagamewiththekids,wefinishedearlyandIaskedthemifanyonehadaquestionforOfficerBoucherandateenylittlegirlraisedherhandandsaid‘IloveyouOfficerBoucher!’”OurteamisespeciallythankfulforPrincipalScrogginsandMs.DonnaDuell,theschool'sleadKindergartenteacher,forworkingsocloselywithusandmakingsuretheprogramwasasuccess.

ForaperiodoftwoweeksinFebruary,leagueladiespartneredwithlocalorganizationstopromotehealthylifestylechoicesforthechildrenandyouthofourcommunity.Thisyear,KidsintheKitchenfocusedonnutritionandhearthealthawareness.Participantswereeducatedonthenewfoodplatewhichincludedanactivitytocreatetheirownhealthyplate.Childrenwereremindedtofillhalftheirplatewithfruitsandvegetables!Aspecialyogurtbarwascreatedallowingchildrentomakeasnackwithseveralofthefoodgroups—dairy,fruits,andgrains.

BypartneringwithorganizationssuchasVolunteersofAmerica,CommunityRenewal,ProvidenceHouse,andBarksdaleAirForceBase,theseladieswereabletoreachover150children.Eachevening,ladiesarrivedatadesignateddestinationtomeetandteachthechildrenattendingtheafterschoolprograms.Alongwithnutritionaleducation,topicsincludedhandhygiene,dentalhygiene,andexercise.Allparticipantsweregivena100CalorieSnackPackwithhearthealthytipsattachedandaKidsintheKitchenreusablewaterbottle!

continued service2012-2013 Planned Community Projects

TheProjectResearchandDevelopmentcommitteehasbeenworkingdiligentlytodevelopnewprojectsforourmembershipbasedontheJuniorLeagueofShreveport-Bossier’sfocusarea,FamiliesandChildrenatRisk.Asaresultofallthecommittee’shardwork,PR&Ddevelopedtwonewproposals,approvedbyourmembershipduringourFebruarymeeting,whichwilltakeplacebeginninginthe2012-2013Leagueyear.

ThefirstprojectwillbeacollaborativeeffortwiththeProvidenceHouseinShreveport.Therewillbethreepartstotheproject.First,therewillbehands-on,eighthourvolunteeropportunitiesatthebeginningoftheLeagueyearwherethecommitteememberswillvolunteeratProvidenceHouseandlearnmoreabouthowthisorganizationservesourcommunity.Second,thecommitteewillbetrainedbyProvidenceHousestaffondifferentaspectsofdomesticviolence.Third,memberswillattendmonthlyeventsduringtheyearwheretheywillgiveapresentationonDomesticViolenceandactascommunityeducatorsandteachtheprogramdevelopedbyProvidenceHouse.

ThesecondprojectismodeledaftertheJuniorLeagueofPortland’s“BetweentheLines.”StatisticsshowthatoneinfortychildrenintheUnitedStateshasanincarceratedparent.Despitethisfact,therearerelativelyfewagenciesorprogramsdesignedtoaddresstheneedsofthisuniquepopulation.Shreveport-Bossierisnotexempttothisreality,somembersofJLSBaresteppingoutofourcomfortzoneandpartneringwiththeBossierSheriff’sDepartmentforthesakeofourchildren.BetweentheLineswillprovideopportunitiesforchildrentoremainconnectedwiththeirabsentparentsthroughaliteracyexperience.TheprogramwillinvolveLeaguevolunteersvisitingBossier’sMediumCorrectionFacilityinPlainDealingtodigitallyrecordparentsreadingchildren’sbooks.Therecordingswillthenbemailedtotheincarceratedindividuals’childreninCDorDVDformatalongwithanew,wrappedcopyofthebookandapersonalnotefromtheirparent.Thesematerialsgiveeachchildtheopportunitytohearhisorherabsentparent'svoicewhenevertheywishandshareauniqueandpersonallearningexperience.

PR&DnotonlydevelopedprojectsforthiscomingLeagueyear,butalsomaderecommendationstodiscontinuesomeprojectsandchangetwoongoingprojectsfor2012-2013.AllofthesechangeswerebasedonmemberinputfromsurveysdistributedattheSeptemberGeneralmeetingandonmemberdiscussionsattheNovembergroupmeetings.AmongtheprojectsthatwillbediscontinuedfornextyearareShriner’sBingo,PairedReadingatAtkinsElementary,HealthLiteracyInitiativeatWestShreveportElementary,andRiverCitiesYouthSummit.TheseprojectsweresuchablessingtoourLeague,butdonotmeetourcommunityandmembers’needsgoingforward.AmongtheprojectsthatwillcontinuewithchangesareHealthLiteracyInitiativeSummerCampandDoneinaDay.TheSummerCampwillbeexpandedtothreemoreschoolsforatotaloffoursummercamps.ForDoneinaDay,memberswillhavetheoptiontochooseaFallorSpringsession.Membersindicatedthattheywouldliketoseemoreconcentratedplacements,andhopefullythesetwochangeswillmeetthatneedwhileservingourcommunityandmeetingourfocusarea.

PR&Disveryhumbledbythetrustourmembershaveputinthisyear’scommitteeandwillcontinuetoworkdiligentlytomakesurewearemeetingourmembers’andcommunity’sneedsaswemoveforward.StaytunedforanewandexcitingyearforPR&DasweenteradevelopingyearandrevisitprojectslikeRedRiverRevel’sArtistforaDay.PR&DlooksforwardtoshapingthefuturefortheJuniorLeagueofShreveport-Bossier!

IhadthehonorofbeingagroupleaderfortheFamily,Fitness,FunprogramatCreswellElementary.ItwassuchpositiveexperienceandIwouldliketoencouragethenewprovisionalstostepupintoaleadershiprole!Hereisalittleadviceforthenewleaderstohelpmaketheirprovisionalprojectassuccessfulaspossible.

1. Communicate -Communicatewitheveryoneinvolvedintheproject:allofthemembersinyourgroup,yourJuniorLeagueprovisionalprojectchairmen,andyourcontactpersonforwheretheprojectisbeingheld.Keepyourgroupupdatedondeadlinesandalsosende-mailsofencouragement!IalsofriendedeveryoneinmygrouponFacebooksowewouldhaveonemorelineofcommunication.Don’teverfeellikeyoumightbesendingouttoomuchinformation,especiallywhenitcomestodeadlines.Youwillfeelmuchbetterknowingthateveryoneyou’reworkingwithis“intheknow”!

2. Delegate -Beingaleaderisabigresponsibilitybutthereisgreatnews,youhaveawholeteamunderyou.Icanguaranteeyou’renottheonlypersoninyourgroupwithleadershipskills.Askforhelpanddelegateresponsibility.Breakyourgroupupintogroupswithinthegroup,thatwaytasksaremoremanageablewithasmallergroupofladies.

3. Be Flexible -Whenthedayofyourprojectfinallyarrivesitmightnotgoexactlyasyouhadmappedoutinyourheadorevenwrittenonyouragenda.Don’tstress!Improviseandbeflexible.Rememberthemostimportantaspectofyourprovisionalprojectisthatyou’reservingthoseinthecommunityyoulove.Ifthepeopleyouareservinghavesmilesontheirfaces,yourprojecthasbeenasuccess!
