Spend a special day going back in time to Dover, Ohio, a small com-
munity south of Cleveland! After a relaxing one hour ride, we will tour the historic J.E. Reeves Vic-
torian Home and Carriage House
Museum. This beautiful 17- room mansion has been care-fully restored to its Victorian elegance and contains nearly all the original furnishings of Jeremiah E. Reeves, a Dover industrialist and banker. The Carriage House features a wide variety of antique carriages and cars. Also enjoy strolling through the beautiful gardens. We will have our brown bag lunches in the Carriage House.
Next stop is Dover’s fascinating Warther Museum where we will tour the 64 ebony, ivory and wal-nut model trains and other items hand carved by Ernest Warther. We will also marvel at Freida Warther’s collection of 73,000 antique buttons arranged in beautiful designs and enjoy the Swiss-style fl ower gardens. Our tour will take us to see the Warther knife-making studio where outstand-ing kitchen cutlery is produced. Last stop will be the gift shop where you can purchase the Warther cutlery, as well as other beautiful gift items, before we depart for home.

As reported by The Chicago Tribune, Reuters, and the Today Show, Hollywood screenwriter Joe Eszterhas, writer of numerous movies including Basic Instinct and Jagged Edge, recently accused Mel Gibson of hating Jews, using Anti-Semitic slurs, minimizing the Holocaust, and warning of a “Jewish conspiracy.”
“Fracking,” or hydraulic fracturing, the drilling of shale under the ground to extract natural gas and oil, is a
hot topic in Ohio and many other states. Is it a good practice? What is the environmental, health, and
economic impact of fracking? Hear a panel of area experts on all sides of the issue discuss what fracking is, its pro’s and con’s, current and pending legislation
to regulate fracking, and more. Become educated and informed to take action about this important Ohio issue!

Park Preschool Corner
June 2012 5
I often kvell (brag) about the many wonderful things that make Park Preschool the high quality preschool program it is. Not only can we look to our fabulous teachers, inte-
grated curriculum, exceptional facilities and, of course, our remarkable children, but to a team of other people who are an integral part of our program yet whose praises often go unsung. Without them, we’d be just another good preschool.
Zehava Galun has been with Park Pre-school for over 10 years. She started in the classroom where her specialty was the very youngest students here, the 18 month olds. Boy did they love her! When she decided that it was time to move beyond the classroom, she combined her teaching skills and her Israeli roots to make weekly classroom visits for He-
brew language education. She captivates and educates the children with songs, games and fi ngerplays while setting the foundations for learning Hebrew. The children adore her visits and soak up the language at the same time.
Michelle Geller is our wonderful music teacher. I met Michelle during Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, a community theater production where I was the musical director and she was star-ring in the role of Narrator (for those of you who have seen Joseph, there would be no show without the narrator). We were reunited when she applied for a teaching
position in 2008. She is incredibly talented, has a fabulous rapport with the children, and has a number of children’s CDs on the market. We are very fortunate to have her at Park.
To spread our love for reading, we part-nered with the Cuyahoga County Public Library who brought Young Kim into our school. She visits once a month in the Park Synagogue library to read to the children. But she goes way beyond just "reading" a book – she brings music, puppets and costumes! Our children don’t just hear a story, they live the story. And when our
children run into Young Kim at the Orange Library they feel an extra special connection between Park Preschool, the public library and the importance of a good book.
Next month watch for: Who else “lives” at Park that helps
makes our school special?
Happy Summer,Morah Kimmy aka Kim Lausin,

GCC UpdatePark Synagogue is a founding member of Greater Cleveland Congregations, a coalition of 40 congregations and com-munity organizations working together to make our region a more just and prosperous place. Listed below are the fi ve issue areas on which GCC is focusing. We encourage you to get involved with GCC through one or more of the Issue Teams. Your input can make a diff erence to the lives of many!
CRIMINAL JUSTICE TEAM:
The Criminal Justice team looks at local and state legislation that can remove barriers to employment for ex-off enders. The team is also working to assess the viability of making an impact on the death penalty, racial profi ling, and expunge-ment. Contact Susan Reis at [email protected], or Judi
Greenspan at [email protected] for more information.
EDUCATION TEAM:
After weeks of research and deliberation, the GCC an-nounced its support for Mayor Jackson’s education reform legislation. The Education Team is now working to under-stand the details behind the proposed fall school levy in Cleveland and discern its role in that campaign, and to investigate how to bring more resources to the area of early childhood education. Meanwhile, the GCC is working to build teams of parents in CMSD schools that can be an active voice in the implementation of school reform. Contact Sandy Ellis at [email protected] for more information.
FOOD ACCESSIBILITY TEAM:
This team is building a constituency of residents living in neighborhoods identifi ed as "food deserts.” Their future action steps will be determined by the interests and commit-ment of this new constituency. Contact Joe Arnoff at [email protected] for more information.
HEALTH CARE TEAM:
The Health Care team is presently focusing on the provi-sion of mental health services. The team will be conducting meetings with congregants connected to the mental health system as patients, professionals, and family members to discern where GCC can make a diff erence. Contact Michael
Weil at [email protected] for more information.
JOBS TEAM:
The jobs team is launching a pilot program to help job hunters in our congregations improve their eff ectiveness in seeking employment, and to connect them with potential employers in our congregations. Contact Michael Weil at [email protected] for more information.
For more information, contact Park’s GCC Co-Chairs Michael
Weil at [email protected], or Edie Ungar Shafron at [email protected], or call Ellen Petler at (216) 371-2244, ext. 122.

Park Was Crazy with Kugels at the Kugel Cook-Off!
Kugels, kugels, kugels! Park was crazy with kugels at the Kugel Cook-Off Luncheon on May 5th! Winners of the Kugel Cook-off were Rabbi
Sharon Marcus in the savory kugel category, and Sharon
Epstein and Charlotte
Kaminsky in the sweet kugel category. Thanks to all our creative Park chefs who made their delicious kugels earlier in the week to be judged and served at the luncheon. Thank you to Judy Becker,
Jackie Brooks, Sharon Epstein, Johanna Goldfarb,
Joan Horowitz, Charlotte Kaminsky, Rabbi Sharon
Marcus, Mary Perlmutter, Ieda Warshay, Ruth Baker
& Jordan Wexler, Ellen Young, and Park’s 7th grade
Kashruth and Cooking Class.
Thanks also to our expert judges who took their job very seriously – Linda Griffi th, Marlene Leitson, and Cantor
Misha Pisman. They did a “blind” judging, not knowing who had made each kugel, and tasted and then rated the 12 kugels in 5 areas: taste, richness, appearance, originality, and consistency. The winners each received a beautiful kugel server hand made and donated by Jackie
Brooks.
Thanks to the hardworking committee from the Women’s Rosh Chodesh Group, sponsor of the event: Lee Apple,
Judy Becker, Jackie Brooks, Sharon Epstein, Donna
Levine, Audrey Lowe, Joyce Norr, Mina Saidel, and
Susan Stone. Money raised from this event went to Park’s Nashim Fund for Jewish Education for Women.
