Only for use in the BMW trading organisation.Installation time approx. 4 hours, which can varyaccording to the condition and fittings of thevehicle.Electrical knowledge is required.

General notesThe method of installation is illustrated on a left-hand drive model. For right-hand drive models,under certain circumstances installation must becarried out in mirror image.In the event that given PIN spaces are alreadyassigned, bridges, double crimpings or parallelconnections will have to be made.

Cable installationTo avoid the possibility of faults occurring, keep tothe prescribed installation paths in the vehicle!

Do not work under any circumstances with so-called Scotchlock quick connectors as these cantrigger faults in the on-board electrical system.

When installing cables in the vehicle, make surethey do not get kinked or damaged as likewisefaults may occur which can only be localised byextensive reworking later. Costs arising in thesecircumstances will not be indemnified by BMW.

4. Installation of ultrasonic sensor

Install power supply wiring harness (1) from thePDC control unit (2) to the fuse strip (3), to thegong (4) at the left footwell trim-panel and to thejoint connector (5) in the vicinity of the steeringcolumn. Install ultrasonic sensor wiring harness (6)from the control unit (2) to the ultrasonic sensors (7).Only BMW 3 Series touring (E46/3)In the E46/3 the PDC control unit (2) is found in thearea to the rear of the rear seat bench.

Remove boot mat (1) and the cover plate lyingunderneath it.

Undo plastic screws (1). Remove storage tray (2).Prise out cover (3) carefully with screw driver.

Undo expanding rivets (1), dismantle storage tray (2). Remove screw (3) and lift out car jack (4).Prise out cover (5) carefully with screwdriver.

Undo hex nuts (1) (on right and left side of thevehicle in each case) in order to dismantle the rearpanel. Then remove rear panel.

Undo the plastic nuts (1) and remove cover (2).

Prise out cover (1) of the rear panel (2) carefullywith a screw driver and remove it.

Clip the ultrasonic sensors (1) into the holders (2) inthe bumper.

Replace the central bump strip for the bump stripwith recesses (1) contained in the parts kit. Do thisin accordance with repair manual 51 12 080.

Clip the ultrasonic sensors (1) into the holders (2) inthe bumper.

5. Install ultrasonic sensor wiringharness

Put cable straps (1) on weld studs (2). Removecovering (3).

Hang the ultrasonic sensor wiring harness (1) in thecable straps (2). Thread plug connector G throughthe body lead-through and insert grommet (3).Install plug connector G to installation location ofthe PDC control unit.

Insert plug connectors (H, I, J, K) of the ultrasonicsensor wiring harness into the appropriateultrasonic sensors (1). Fit the rear panel onto thevehicle.

6. Installation of PDC control unit

Fasten PDC control unit (1) to bracket (2) withplastic nuts (3).

Screw in hexagon head screws (1) into the bracket(2) by only a few thread turns.

Insert the hexagon-head screws (2) which havebeen fastened to the bracket (1) by only a fewthread turns through the two elongated holes onthe chassis reinforcement (3) and screw them tight.Insert plug connectors (F, G) into the identical-colour mating connectors of the control unit andarrest them in place with retaining clips (4).

Only vehicles with towing-hitch module

Pull off plug connector (3) at towing-hitch module(1). Undo hexagon-head bolts (2) and take outtowing-hitch module towards the rear.

If the vehicle is equipped with a towing hitch,the support is already fitted in the vehicle and thePDC control unit is fastened to it.

7. Install power supply wiringharness

Only BMW 3 Series touring (E46/3)

Guide the wiring harness for the power supply (1)from the PDC control unit in the boot through thegrommet (2) on the right behind the rear seatbench and install it along the right sill strips to thefuse box in the glove box.

Only E46/3Install the wiring harness for the power supply (1)from the PDC control unit in the area behind therear seat bench along the right sill strips to thefuse box in the glove box.

In right-hand drive models, the sameinstallation route of the power supply wiringharness as in left-hand drive models should beadhered to. The lacing on the power supply wiringharness must be opened up.

Insert cable (1) of the power supply wiring harness,cable colour green/white, into the fuse holder (2)X10016, pin 48, plug-in place F 24 and put in 5Aflat-bladed fuse (3).

Cut out pre-punched aperture (1) for gong (3) outof the foot-well trim panel on the drivers side andinsert the gong (3). Insert the socket contact, cablecolour blue/grey/ in the 1-pole socket housing D.Insert the socket contact, cable colour brown, inthe 3-pole socket housing C, pin 1, and insert thesocket contact, cable colour red/yellow, in the 3-pole socket housing C, pin 3. Plug in plug-connectors into the appropriate plug-in places onthe gong as follows:

1-pole socket housing D plug-in place T4 (X 363)3-pole socket housing C plug-in place T3 (X 522)

Vehicles with gong

Tie back not needed cable.

Insert plug contact on the cable, colourbrown/black, (1) into the joint connector (2) largecharacters (X 217) in the vicinity of the steeringcolumn in the footwell on the drivers side.In right-hand drive models, tie back the not-needed cable length.

Fasten joint connector and cable with cablestraps. Choose the installation route of the cableso as to rule out possible damage to it frommoving parts.

8. Coding the PDC control unit

Coding of the PDC control unit is necessary inorder to provide optimal conformity of the PDCretrofit system to the vehicle-specific conditions.For coding the PDC control unit, the MobileDiagnostic Computer MoDiC III or the DIS with CDversion 13 (or higher) is required. Coding with anolder version is not possible.

The following sets out briefly the step-by-stepprocedure for coding:

Connect MoDiC III to the diagnostic plug in thevehicle and switch on the ignition.

2Allgemeine HinweiseDie Einbauweise ist am Linkslenker-Modell dargestellt. Beim Rechtslenker-Modell mu der Einbau unterUmstnden spiegelbildlich durchgefhrt werden.Falls angegebene PIN Kammern belegt sind, mssen Brcken, Doppelcrimpungen oder Parallelanschlge durchge-fhrt werden.

KabelverlegungHalten Sie sich zur Vermeidung von Strungen genau an die vorgesehenen Verlegungswege im Fahrzeug!

Arbeiten Sie auf keinen Fall mit sog. Scotchlock-Schnellverbindern, da diese Strungen in der Bordelektrik ausl-sen knnen!

Achten Sie darauf, dass die Kabel bei der Verlegung im Fahrzeug nicht geknickt oder beschdigt werden, da sonstebenfalls Strungen entstehen, die spter nur durch umfangreiche Nacharbeiten lokalisiert werden knnen. Diedabei entstehenden Kosten werden von BMW nicht vergtet.

Kunststoffschrauben (1) lsen. Ablagefach (2) ent-nehmen. Abdeckung (3) mit Schraubenzieher vor-sichtig aushebeln.

Spreiznieten (1) lsen, Ablagefach (2) ausbauen.Schraube (3) entfernen und Wagenheber (4) her-ausheben. Abdeckung (5) mit Schraubenziehervorsichtig aushebeln.

Sechskantmuttern (1) (jeweils auf rechter und linkerFahrzeugseite) zum Ausbau der Heckverkleidunglsen. Danach Heckverkleidung abnehmen.

Nur BMW 3er touring (E46/3)

Die Kunststoffmuttern (1) lsen und Abdeckung (2)herausnehmen.

Stoleiste (1) der Stofngerverkleidung (2) vor-sichtig mit einem Schraubendreher aushebeln undabnehmen.

Stoleiste mit Aussparungen fr Ultraschallwandler(1) in die Stofngerverkleidung (2) einsetzen undandrcken. Ultraschallwandler (3) in Blende (1) ein-stecken bis Verriegelung einrastet. Lage der Sen-soren ist durch Markierungen vorgegeben.

Nur BMW 3er Limousine (E46/4) ab 09/2001

Mittlere Stoleiste gem Reparaturanleitung 51 12 080 gegen die im Teilesatz enthalteneStoleiste mit Aussparungen (1) tauschen.

Ultraschallwandler (1) in die Aufnahmen (2) desStofngers einrasten.

5. Ultraschallwandlerkabelbaumverlegen

Kabelbnder (1) auf Schweibolzen (2) aufstecken.Abdeckung (3) entfernen.

Ultraschallwandlerkabelbaum (1) in die Kabelbn-der (2) einhngen. Stecker G durch die Karosserie-durchfhrung fhren und Tlle (3) einsetzen.Stecker G zum Einbauort des PDC-Steuergertesverlegen.

76. Einbau PDC-Steuergert

Nur BMW 3er Limousine (E46/4)Nur Fahrzeuge ohne Anhngekupplungsmodul

PDC-Steuergert (1) mit Kunststoffmuttern (3) aufHalter (2) befestigen.

Sechskantschrauben (1) in Halter (2) nur wenigeGewindegnge eindrehen.

Die am Halter (1) mit nur wenigen Gewindegngenbefestigten Sechskantschrauben (2) durch die bei-den Langlcher am Karosserieverstrker (3) fhrenund festschrauben. Stecker (F, G) in die farbglei-chen Gegenstecker des Steuergertes einsteckenund mit Sicherungsbgeln (4) arretieren.

Nur BMW 3er Limousine (E46/4)Nur Fahrzeuge mit Anhngekupplungsmodul

Stecker (3) am Anhngekupplungsmodul (1) abzie-hen. Sechskantschrauben (2) lsen und Anhnge-kupplungsmodul nach hinten herausnehmen.

PDC-Steuergert (1) mit Kunststoffmuttern (3) aufHalter (2) befestigen.

Anhngekupplungsmodul (1) mit den Kunststoff-muttern (2) am Halter (3) befestigen.

8Sechskantschrauben (1) in Halter (2) nur wenigeGewindegnge eindrehen.

Die am Halter (1) mit nur wenigen Gewindegngenbefestigten Sechskantschrauben (2) durch die bei-den Langlcher am Karosserieverstrker (3) fhrenund festschrauben. Stecker (F, G) in die farbglei-chen Gegenstecker des Steuergertes einsteckenund mit Sicherungsbgeln (4) arretieren.

Nur BMW 3er touring (E46/3)

Das PDC-Steuergert (1) mit zwei Kunststoffmut-tern (2) auf dem Trger (3) befestigen.

Den Trger mit dem PDC-Steuergert (1) mit denSechskantschrauben (2) und den Kunststoffmut-tern (3) im Fahrzeug befestigen.

Sollte das Fahrzeug mit einer Anhngerkupp-lung ausgerstet sein, ist der Trger bereits imFahrzeug verbaut und das PDC-Steuergert wirddaran befestigt.

7. Stromversorgungskabelbaumverlegen

Nur BMW 3er Limousine (E46/4)

Den Kabelbaum fr die Stromversorgung (1) vomPDC-Steuergert im Gepckraum durch die Tlle(2) rechts hinter der Rcksitzbank durchfhren undentlang der rechten Einstiegsleisten zum Siche-rungskasten im Handschuhkasten verlegen.

Nur BMW 3er touring (E46/3)Den Kabelbaum fr die Stromversorgung (1) vomPDC-Steuergert im Bereich hinter der Rcksitz-bank entlang der rechten Einstiegsleisten zumSicherungskasten im Handschuhkasten verlegen.

Beim Rechtslenkermodell ist der gleiche Ver-legeweg des Stromversorgungskabelbaumes wiebeim Linkslenkermodell einzuhalten. Es mu derAbbinder am Stromversorgungskabelbaum aufge-trennt werden.

Vorgeprgten Ausschnitt (1) fr Gong (3) aus derFuraumverkleidung Fahrerseite (2) ausschneidenund den Gong (3) einsetzen. Den Buchsenkontaktmit der Kabelfarbe Blau/Grau in das 1-poligeBuchsengehuse D einstecken. Den Buchsenkon-takt mit der Kabelfarbe Braun in 3-polige Buchsen-gehuse C Pin 1 und Buchsenkontakt mit Kabel-farbe Rot/Gelb in das 3-polige Buchsengehuse CPin 3 einstecken. Stecker in die jeweiligen Steck-pltze am Gong wie folgt einstecken:

Fr die optimale Anpassung des PDC-Nachrst-systems an die fahrzeugspezifischen Gegebenhei-ten ist eine Codierung des PDC-Steuergerteserforderlich. Zur Codierung des PDC-Steuerger-tes wird der Mobile Diagnose Computer-MoDiC IIIoder der DIS mit der CD-Version 13 (oder hher)bentigt, eine Codierung mit einer lteren Versionist nicht mglich.

Nachfolgend werden die Ablaufschritte der Codie-rung kurz aufgezeigt:
