A Warm Welcome to the 2011 Parker Summer Program!THE SCHOOL YEAR BEGINS WITH PARKER’S SUMMER PROGRAM

Great Courses, Great Activities…and a Great Value!Inspiring excellence is a notion that

defines so much of the fall/winter/spring

terms at Parker — and is also integral to

Parker’s summer classes and related

activities. From junior kindergarten

through grade 12, Parker’s Summer

Program offers an array of learning

opportunities in the classroom and

beyond. Be it at the Lower, Middle, or

Upper School, the focus is on enrichment

and advancement, keeping students’

brains in the fast lane during the

summer months.

Those of us associated with the

Summer Program understand that

the general economy continues to

recover only slowly. Accordingly,

virtually every course and activity has

had its tuition or fee reduced by 5%

from last summer. Coupled with the

“Early Bird” registration option, families

can save up to 10% over last summer

when registering!

New for Summer 2011: Online RegistrationThe Summer Program is delighted to

advise that complete online registration is

now available for the first time! Parker

has retained the services and support of

CampBrain, the pre-eminent school and

camp management software company.

We believe you will find the Summer

Program’s new online registration

convenient and user-friendly. (If you

prefer, however, you may complete a

paper registration. A registration form

can be found at the end of this brochure

for your use. You can make copies of this

registration form for registering

additional students.)

Please review the information, courses,

and related activities presented on the

pages that follow. Should you have

questions about the curriculum, the

registration process, or the Parker

Summer Program in general, please

contact me directly in the Summer and

Extended Programs Office, located on

Parker’s Linda Vista campus.

The Parker teaching faculty, coaching

staff, and I look forward to providing

a rewarding and fun learning experience

for each and every student who joins us

this summer.

2011 PARKER SUMMER PROGRAM LOWER SCHOOL

WWW.FRANCISPARKER.ORG 2 858.569.7900

Lower School CoursesFor all who have had the opportunity to visit or spend time on

the Lower School campus located in Mission Hills, it is clear

that this is a magical place. For summer 2011, some exciting

courses and activities have been organized.

At the junior and senior kindergarten levels, the morning-long

Little Explorers is back once again. New for summer 2011,

for 1st-5th grade students, several grade level-specific

JumpStart courses are being offered. Student numbers will be

kept small for all classes to ensure the best possible learning

environment, so sign up soon!

Also new this summer and as an alternative to our JumpStart

classes, a number of stand-alone courses are available. Please

see the course descriptions, dates, and times for all Lower

School courses, appearing on pages 4-7.

The Summer Fun afternoon program typically finds the children

off-campus, involved in fun, safe, age-appropriate activities. The

youngest kids may enjoy a variety of beach and aquatic

adventures, games and crafts — all supervised closely by a

veteran Parker staff. Older students (grades 3-5) may head for the beach or embark on field trips to local attractions like

Soak City, Solid Rock Gym, Boomers and other destination points in and around San Diego. Regardless of age or grade

level, the emphasis of Summer Fun is to have fun and learn about the many features and attactions that give San Diego

its unique character.

“Thank you for the welcome extended to Emma during the summer math course she took. Although we were ‘guests’ atParker, the School’s concern andthoughtfulness were evident fromthe first day and made us feel like a part of the Parker community.”IRIS HALPERN, 2010 PARKER SUMMER PROGRAM PARENT

The Grandest of Classrooms: The Grand Canyon, Lake Powell/UtahCanyons AdventureINSTRUCTORS: LESLEy UNDERWOOD & GRAND CLASSROOM STAFF

This is a two-week life skills and outdoor adventure/field

study course, with Week #1 spent on the Linda Vista

campus prepping students for a once-in-a-lifetime

wilderness experience. Working with Parker Middle

School teacher Lesley Underwood, an accomplished

outdoors enthusiast, students prepare for the adventure

portion of the course to take place in the Grand

Canyon/Lake Powell/Utah canyons region.

Students learn about the unique

Southwestern environment they are to

visit, the individuals and groups who have

inhabited these lands and the challenges

faced to keep these special places pristine

and unspoiled. Students come to understand the geology,

biology and ecology of the areas, as well as researching

and learning about the environmental challenges looming.

They are prepared for all outdoor activities, even if they

have never hiked, kayaked or camped.

The real adventure begins with Week #2! After a short

flight to Las Vegas, Ms. Underwood and the students will

be met by representatives of Grand Classroom at the

airport and drive up as a group to Utah. Grand Classroom

is one of the premier outdoor educational student travel

groups in the country, based in Charlottesville, VA. Its

guides lead thousands of students of all ages “into the

wild” each year. Students come to grasp how a human

presence impacts a unique environment — in the Grand

Canyon, on Lake Powell and in the Utah canyons — and

just as important, how to leave these environments

undisturbed upon departure. Students become responsible

adventurers, gain an appreciation for the outdoors, build

self-confidence and come to understand the relevance of

teamwork.

The student to Grand Classroom guide ratio is 7:1 on

Lake Powell, 8:1 in the Utah canyons, maximizing

student learning and ensuring group safety. (All Grand

Classroom guides have earned their Wilderness First

Responder Certification. Learn more about this

remarkable company by going to

American History for young CitizensINSTRUCTOR: DR. ERIC TAyLOR

This course presents a chronological overview of

American history from the pre-colonial period to the

present. Students develop a command of systematic

factual knowledge and the ability to analyze that

knowledge. Information is presented and assessed

through lecture, discussion, essay writing, objective

testing, and critical examination of sources, documentary

material, graphs and charts. Major movements including

Nationalism, Agrarianism, Expansionism, Immigration,

Conservatism, Liberalism, and Urbanization are studied.

The course focuses on the nature and evolution of

citizenship in America so that students better

understand their role as individuals in their country.

Special emphasis is placed on analyzing how Americans

develop popular cultural representations of historical

events. In today’s society the medium of film, television,

and the Internet are critical to how young citizens

understand and relate to the past; as especially relevant

sources, these will receive significant attention during

the course of study. In addition, local historical sites are

visited so that students gain a stronger sense of San

Diego history and culture within the bigger picture of

American national development.

RegistrationRegistration for all courses and activities for Parker

students begins on Tuesday, March 1, 2011 at 8:00am.

All courses and activities are filled on a first-come,

first-served basis.

New Online Registrationfor 2011: Parents are urged to take advantage

of the Summer Program’s Camp

Brain online registration and

payment option. For complete

information on how to register your child(ren) online

using the Camp Brain system, please go to

www.francisparker.org/summer.

Alternatively, students may be registered by completing

a paper registration form as in past years. A printable

registration form may be downloaded from Parker’s

Summer Program link (www.francisparker.org/summer),

completed and then submitted to the Summer Program’s

office located on the Linda Vista campus. One

registration form per child, please. There is also a

registration form in the back of this 2011 Summer

Program course catalogue that may be removed and

completed.

Completed registration forms and tuition payments may

be left with the Upper School receptionist in the

Administration and Student Services Building on the

Linda Vista campus (Building 500) or with an

administrative assistant at the Lower School Office on

the Mission Hills campus, or mailed to:

Francis Parker School

Summer Program

6501 Linda Vista Road

San Diego, CA 92111

A student will not be registered formally until both a completed

registration form and the full tuition payment are received. Completed

registrations may also be faxed to 858.569.0621, but will not be

considered complete until the full tuition payment is received by the

Summer Program Office.

AttendanceDue to the relatively short length of the Summer

Program, absences must be avoided. For those courses

receiving trimester, semester or year credit, missing

more than one class will in all likelihood prevent a

student from fulfilling the classroom hours requirement

of the course and warrant a “no-credit” for the course.

IMPORTANT: If a student will be absent for any reason,

please advise the Summer Program office by 7:50am by

calling 8585-569-7900, ext. #4236, advising the Director

directly or by leaving a message.

AttireStudent dress is intended to be casual at all times —

thus, cool and comfortable. We ask that students

exercise good judgment, however. Recommended attire

for girls is blouses or polo shirts, slacks or shorts. For

boys, sport or polo shirts, slacks or shorts. Jeans and t-

shirts for girls and boys are acceptable, but they should

be neat and free of holes or tears.

BehaviorThe Parker Summer Program reserves the right to

dismiss at any time, any student whose deportment or

conduct is deemed to be unsafe, inappropriate and/or

counter to the classroom experience or to the goals of the

Summer Program. In the instance of a dismissal (or a

student withdrawal once classes have begun), no refund

of tuition or fees will be issued.

Late Registration FeesIn an effort to confirm courses, teachers, order

teaching materials and books, and reserve

classroom space, registrations must be

completed and received by May 31, 2011.

Registrations submitted after May 31 for either

Session I or Session II will incur an additional

fee, per the following schedule:
