Happy 93rd Birthday June 12th George H.W. Bush!

TRIVIA: Which president is the only president who was once head of a labor

BRING A LADY VETERAN TO THE PCAD MEETING!

On June12th, remember our women in the military. Seventy five years

ago, in 1942, Congress enacted the bill which established the WAACS,

WAVES, and the USMC SPARS. They served admirably in WWII and

    every conflict since.

Elections Have Consequences, Especially at Weatherford College

    Swamp Draining at WC

There seems to be a huge impact that has occurred with the election of

Lela Morris and Sue Coody to the Board of Trustees. The President has

stepped down and requested a minimal pay position so he can qualify

for retirement, and recently another one of the Trustees has resigned.

Weatherford College will become a better place because of the May

    election.

  • Texas Commissioner of Agriculture candidate Kimberly Olson

to speak at Parker County Active Democrats meeting on June 12

From a Claire Olson press release

Active and veteran service women throughout the region are invited to be honored

at the meeting to celebrate Texas Women Veterans Day

Weatherford, TX--Kimberly Olson, Col., United States Air Force,(Ret.), will be the

keynote speaker at the upcoming meeting of the Parker County Active Democrats.

The meeting will be held Monday, June 12. The meeting starts at 6:30 p.m. with

social time and refreshments, and the program begins at 7 p.m. The meeting will be

held atthe Twentieth Century Club, 321 S. Main St., Weatherford, and is open to the

    public.

The Parker County Active Democrats are reaching out to active and veteran service

women throughout the region to come to the event and be honored for their service.

The Texas Legislature just passed a law making June 12 Texas Women Veterans

Day. The law acknowledges the "Women's Armed Services Integration Act," enacted

on June 12, 1948, which enabled women to serve as permanent, regular members

    of the Armed Forces.

Olson is a candidate for Texas Commissioner of Agriculture. The primary will be held

in March of 2018 and the general election in November of 2018.

Olson, a farmer, veteran, pilot and champion of education, is influencing the future of

sustainable food production through her Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) at

the 4K River Ranch, Mineral Wells, Tex.

In working with veterans, nutritious food became the great healer for those struggling

with the human heartbreak that is war. Olson has a Natural-Organic Certification

from the Texas Organic Research Center and is a Texas Master Gardener, provides

naturally grown food, raises bees, and is committed to sustainable Eco-

Agriculture. She grows produce for Texas families, provides training on growing

healthy food, and lectures on small scale farming.

  • Her 25 years in uniform encompassed a time of great change. She was part of the

first generation of female military pilots, eventually accumulating nearly 4,000 hours

of flying time. As one of the first women to command an operational flying squadron,

Olson rose to the rank of Colonel, served in the Pentagon on the Joint Staff, Office

of the Secretary of Defense, and the Air Staff and deployed to several combat

    zones, including Iraq.

After her military retirement in 2005, she entered the field of public education. By

2007 she was the Director of Human Resources for Dallas Independent School

District, the second largest in Texas. In that same year, she was elected to the

Weatherford Independent School District Board of Trustees, and in 2009 the district

was recognized as the “Texas Outstanding Board of the Year.”

As the retired CEO/President of Grace After Fire, a Texas-based nonprofit dedicated

to helping women veterans help themselves, she reshaped how care was delivered

    to thousands of women veterans.

Olson exemplifies those military veterans who continue to serve their communities

and their nation and in 2014 was inducted into “Texas Women’s Hall of Fame.”

Olson’s website is https://www.kimolson4txag.com/ and her Facebook page is “Kim

    Olson for Agriculture Commissioner.”

Parker County Active Democrats meet monthly on the second Monday of the month

at 321 S. Main St. The group also meets socially for dinner the third Tuesday of

each month at Antonio's Mexican Restaurant, 1900 Santa Fe Drive, Weatherford.

  • PARKER DEMS HAVE SUPER FLOAT IN

    THE SHERIFF'S POSSE RODEO

PARADE "The Democrats float is the best one in the parade." - Nancy McVean

Our Parker County Democratic Party float knocked 'em dead the the Sheriff's Posse

Rodeo Parade, with the Parade Announcer stating we were "very patriotic". Parade

organizers graciously placed our float just before both of the Sons of the

Confederacy floats, which kept us moving at a brisk pace.

Vanessa Adia, candidate for U.S. Congressional District 12, and Kim Olson,

candidate for Texas Secretary of Agriculture both joined us on the float.

Everyone had a great time. Special thanks to all those who worked so hard to make

    this happen.

  • PCAD Meeting Minutes of 8 May 2017 PARKER COUNTY ACTIVE DEMOCRATS

Meeting started at 7:00 p.m. with a greeting by President Claire Olson to all in

attendance followed by a group recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance. President Olson

explained the structure of the Democratic Party in Parker County. The county has an

official Parker County Democratic Party, headed by County Chair Kay Parr. There are

two structured groups that are affiliated: the Parker County Active Democrats being a

PAC (Political Action Committee), and the Parker County Texas Democratic Women

being a club under the auspices of the Texas Democratic Women’s club statewide.

Vice President Sandy Gandy then introduced our speaker, Vanessa Adia, a young

Latina science teacher from Benbrook, who is running against Republican U. S.

Senator, Kay Granger, in the 2018 mid-term elections. After an inspiring view of Ms.

Adia’s plan for the future, a Q and A followed which included various topics. Of great

importance discussed was how to get the message out, and the need to have a

dialogue with unions (MsAdia has spoken with Lockheed union members already and

plans more talks.) A heartfelt plea was expressed for the need to get back to “Texas

Values” so that Parker County residents may have the ability to better

themselves. Another aspect explored is the need to seek out individuals, not

corporations, and build relationships…things that Kay Granger has failed to do. As a

devoted teacher, Mrs. Adia stressed the need for improvements to education, including

the school structures, the administration, and the dissolution of unneeded

testing. School vouchers were discussed with the obvious negative effects of them

    being enumerated.

Title II was explained by Mrs. Adia as an important factor; she stated the three main

objectives are to reduce class sizes, emphasize afterschool programs, and support

professional development. Of course, the Q and A couldn’t end without discussing the

all-important subject of jobs. It was suggested that Mrs. Adia consider holding town

halls to get her message out. Another topic on everyone’s mind was Governor Abbott’s

attack on “sanctuary cities”…yet another of his blatant ways of disregarding local

governments’ right to make their own choices in matters of this nature while touting the

  • age-old GOP mantra of “smaller government”. Members encouraged Mrs. Adia to

entreat Democrats to volunteer on her behalf with their time and money.

Following the speaker, President Olson officially called the meeting to order.

First order of business was to congratulate PCAD member, Lela Morris, on her win as a

Trustee at Weatherford College. Also applauded was Sue Coody’s win of Trustee of

    Weatherford College.

Second order of business was the recognition of poll workers as follows: Gary Howard,

Mike Kinser, Charlie Smith, Ruth Groomer and Peggie Herring, among many others.

Third order of business was a thank you to all who donated food items for the

Weatherford Senior center. Note was made that food items may be brought to the

Drinking Liberally meeting on Tuesday evening, May 16th.

Approval of April 2017 PCAD minutes was unanimous.

Lela Morris presented the Financial Report stating the ending balance as of April 2017

    to be $2,152.27.

County Chair Report was made by Shelley Pace in the absence of Chair Kay Parr who

is recovering from eye surgery. Kay had received a call from the National Democratic

Party to ask what support rural counties need. The call had come to her as a result of

an encounter with Keith Ellison,Deputy Chairman of the National Democratic Party, at a

training session in Austin. At that time Kay told him that the National and State

Democratic Party organizations needed to provide more resources to rural counties like

Parker County. She also discussed the possibility of having a fund raiser for Mike

Collier, candidate for Lieutenant Governor, Beto O’Rourke, candidate for U. S. Senate

seat (District 16) against incumbent, Ted Cruz. and Kim Olson, Candidate for

    Agriculture Commissioner.

  • Membership Committee report was given by Shelley Pace. Chair of that committee, as

follows: tonight PCAD was honored to have 20 visitors and 5 new members.

Communications Chair report was given by Chair Gary Howard; he reminded us that if

you’re not getting his newsletter to give him your info to access it. Gary continues to

    update the website.

President of the Parker County Texas Women’s group, Pat Jackson, reported on the

successful scholarship search culminating in the selections of three outstanding senior

girls from Aledo High School who will be presented their awards on May

22nd. President Jackson is hopeful that the women’s group will have a successful fund-

raiser in the fall to bolster its funds for next year’s scholarship winner(s). PCAD

member, Paula Hall, will be the presenter at the awards ceremony. As always, Mrs.

Jackson would love to see new members joining this group.

Other reporting included the need for volunteers to work with Mike Oates in planning a

raising awareness and fund raising event…specifically a picnic on July 22nd at the Doss

Center to coalesce Democrats around candidates and the present leadership in Texas,

Gilberto Hinojosa. The proposed time for this event is from 3 p.m. – 6 p.m. With the

date of the picnic being in late July, having it indoors in the lovely setting of Doss

Center seems to be a winning venue. Dawn Bourland is researching PCAD t-shirts that

Democrats might wear to this event and others. Nancy McVean will be helping with

this event after returning from a long vacation trip, and Rebecca Gutierrez will help with

    the picnic.

In an effort to acquire new audio-visual equipment, Ric Zahourek has volunteered his

services. Cynthia White, as volunteer in getting snacks for PCAD meetings, sent

around a sign-up sheet. Mike Oates volunteered his services in displaying a PCAD

banner on the grounds of the 20th Century Club each meeting day as a reminder to

members and to inform the public as they pass on South Main Street. Sandra Ringo

offered to help Gary Howard with his communications projects, and Laurel Kimball, to

help Shelley with membership and greetings. With her husband being a member of the

  • Sheriff’s Posse, Lela Morris has volunteered her services at the Parker County Sheriff’s

    Posse Parade on June 7th.

Other Business: Lela Morris made a motion for PCAD to donate $500 to Vanessa

Adia’s campaign, followed by a second from W. D. Kimzey. The motion and second

were deemed moot after Waymond Horton reminded us that, as a PAC whose by-laws

indicate that no preferential treatment, such as donations, may be made to any

Democratic candidate, it would be necessary to wait until after it is determined that Mrs.

Adia has no opponent before a donation is made. As an alternative, donations from

individual members were made giving Mrs. Adia a total of $400+ for her campaign.

Recognition of Calvin Clay, President of NAACP in honor of his organization’s 80th

anniversary was extended. Mr. Clay touted the many philanthropic deeds of his group

which include scholarships, MLK promotional programs, and work against voter

    suppression.

Open Forum: Jean Lockett invited any and all to join her at a “Die-In” at the office of

Kay Granger on Tuesday, May 9th from 10:00 a.m. till noon…the first of two with

another bigger one to be held on Saturday, May12th.

Shelley Pace encouraged everyone to take pre-addressed postcards to Greg Abbott

and Paul Ryan on which to write your comments about each ones’ leadership.

Motion to adjourn was made by Judy Beeman with a second by W. D. Kimzey, followed

    by a unanimous vote.

    Respectfully submitted,

Judy B. Beeman, Secretary, Parker County Active Democrats
