Parkerville Children and Youth Care (Inc) AUTUMN NEWSLETTER MARCH 2014 In February Parkerville Children and Youth Care, in partnership with the Western Australian Council of Social Services (WACOSS) and four other not for profit agencies, brought one of the world's most renowned authorities on child development, Dr Stuart Shanker and Educator, Mr Mike McKay, to Perth to share their knowledge and experience regarding child development and self- regulation in children. On Wednesday, 12 February Dr Shanker presented a workshop entitled 'Children and Self-Regulation: Implications for work with families' to 30 professionals from across the WA social services sector, including 15 Parkerville staff, at the George Jones Child Advocacy Centre in Armadale. Self-regulation is a method devised by Dr Shanker to help children deal with stressors which can lead to behavioural issues. He's quick to point out that the idea of self-regulation has nothing to do with self-control. “People think that, but in fact, self-regulation is about a system deep in the brain that deals with stress and then recovers from that effort”, says Shanker. “What we've discovered is that children in Canada and the US have the highest levels of stress that we've ever seen. “Stress comes from all kinds of things and as a result of all that stress the recovery function wears down and when the recovery function wears down you start to get problems in behaviour, mood, learning or focus. “What we do to enhance this is figure out what is causing the child stress and try to reduce that by teaching them and their parents how to manage that on their own efficiently and effectively”. Joining Dr Shanker on his visit was Mike McKay head of the Surrey School District, a diverse and dynamic school system in British Colombia, Canada. As Superintendent and CEO of Surrey Schools, he is responsible for a student and staff population of almost 80,000. I wish you all a peaceful Easter holiday. Remember, chocolate Easter eggs have no calories on Easter Sunday!

March was a month of celebration for the George Jones Child Advocacy Centre (GJCAC) in Armadale with staff marking the Centre’s 3rd birthday with a lunch on Monday, 10 March, and then celebrating St Patrick’s Day the following Monday, 17 March, by covering everyone and everything in an emerald green glow. Happy 3rd Birthday to the Centre, its children, families and staff and sláinte!

In March 2011 the GJCAC was officially opened and remains the first of its kind in Australia. The Centre is a place where professionals from different agencies including doctors, police, child protection workers, psychologists and child and family advocates form a multi-disciplinary team to provide services to children, young people, and their families, who have experienced trauma from abuse. The various programmes delivered from the Centre have provided support to 2000 children and their families since its doors opened. Other programmes run from the Centre include the Armadale Family Support Network and School Based Support Services.

CAC Celebrations

The Wednesday workshop followed a free seminar the week prior, at the Champion Lakes Auditorium, attended by 85 parents and carers interested in learning strategies to help them manage their child's energy, emotions and attention to assist them to achieve positive goals and improve their learning and wellbeing.

Dr Shanker and Mr McKay's visit is the first step in implementing the Self-Regulation Framework in schools across Australia. Here in WA, it is hoped that the Framework can be rolled out through the State Government's new Child and Parent Centres, 16 of which are due to be up and running at public primary school sites across the State by the end of 2016, offering child development, health and parent support programmes and services.

The Centres will deliver parenting workshops, child and maternal health services, playgroups, early learning programmes and counselling and family support, depending on the specific needs of each community.

Parkerville has been appointed lead agency responsible for the implementation at two of the sites; Brookman Primary (Langford) with associated schools, Thornlie and Yale Primary; and the Challis Early Childhood Education Centre in Armadale, with associated schools, Challis Primary and Nerrigen Brook.

Coinciding with Dr Shanker and Mr McKay's visit, was the announcement by oil and gas giant Woodside of a social investment of $20 million over 10 years, focussing on Early Intervention and specifically the topic of child development. As a leading non-government organisation, Parkerville will be attuned to this plan to change the culture of how we work to develop our children into healthy, educated and resilient adults.

“What self-regulation actually does is to try to identify the reason behavioural issues are occurring in each individual child and puts a plan in place to bring them down to a state where they are calm, focussed and alert”, said Parkerville Children and Youth Care Chief Executive, Basil Hanna.

2014 EVENTS

Annual Parkerville Children and Youth Care Charity Lunch

At Parkerville Children and Youth Care we work with more than 1800 children and young people each year who have been affected by trauma from abuse. Recently, three such young people reached adulthood and are now leaving us to pursue their hopes and dreams and make their way in the world. We took the opportunity to ask them a little about their time with us and what the future holds for them.

How long did you stay with Parkerville Children and Youth Care either in the cottages or with carers in the community

What was good about your time at Parkerville Children and Youth Care?

How did your time at Parkerville Children and Youth Care change your life?

What are you looking forward to?

What goals do you have for yourself?

What do you hope to be doing in 10 years' time?

If there is one thing Parkerville Children and Youth Care and their supporters should know that will assist

them to look after other children better, what is it?

Amber

I went into care at aged 9.

The fun times I had with other children in cottage care. I especially enjoyed nights at Parkerville spent playing games with other children such as 'spot-light'.

They took great care of me and my siblings, and for a moment in our lives, we genuinely felt safe and at home.

My future.

My goal is to become a professional pastry chef, and to travel the world (especially Japan and France).

Hopefully, I will be teaching others what I have learnt in life and about pastry cooking. My dream is to own a café where all my customers are smiling

Support and love the children as much as you can, because I can guarantee that kids like me will have a bright and happy life ahead of them.

?

We wish them well… Will

I first came into Parkerville Children and Youth Care in July 2007, when I was 11. In October 2009 I went to live with my Nanna in Kwinana. I stayed at Nanna's until July 2010, when I moved to the Fremantle Cottage. I have lived at the Fremantle Cottage ever since. So all up, 6 years and 9 months.

I didn't have to move schools anymore; I was safe; I got to make choices about my own life (to an extent).

Going on holidays to Eagle Bay with my carers. Seeing the massive waves at Dunsborough and freaking my cottage mum out when I told her I was going to jump into the surf! Going on a Bush Tucker canoe tour up the Margaret River with the other kids and eating gross food! Going horse riding and being bossed around by the horse! I decided that I wasn't going to ever ride another horse after that!

I was safe; had a stable life and schooling; got help and support when I needed it.

Getting my driver's license; getting a car; finishing my IT Diploma.

Finishing my IT Diploma and continuing on to university; getting a good job in IT; eventually running my own business.

Running my own IT business; own my own home; travelling overseas, especially Japan; driving an Audi R8 (a black one).

Children in care are always going to feel like outsiders, no matter how much you try to prove to them otherwise. They will always feel an emptiness inside. But that doesn't mean you shouldn't keep trying.

How long did you stay with Parkerville Children and Youth Care either in the cottages or with carers in the community?

I came to Parkie at about the age of 7 and stayed in the thcottages on site until just before my 11 birthday. That's when I

I moved in with the Stevens until ... well I'm 18 and a half and still going strong.

Probably the people. I had some great cottage parents, Regina and Ian. “Uncle Basil” has always been there for me and of course, the Stevens family – my foster family – so now I have half-brothers to go with my biological sisters.

When I was about 14 we decided to go on a family adventure. The Gold Coast theme parks needed to be explored. As always we had to make it an adventure and decided to drive all 7 of us across the Nullarbor in our transit van. Seven days to get there watching DVDs and arguing about who sat in which seat. We borrowed a penthouse apartment on the shores of Surfer's Paradise. Dad freaked out about us being on the balcony, on the 24th floor. A week in the theme parks over Christmas was amazing; a quick week in Bundaberg with more family friends; then two weeks camping outside Sydney, visiting all the sites was pretty special. It only took us five days to get home. Only! What was special? Being together, making memories and sharing life.

t gave me a sense of home both in the cottages and with my foster family.

I have chosen to be a chaplain and help kids who have been through what I have. So I am currently doing a cert 4 in church ministry, majoring in working with children. So to answer the question… I'm looking forward to coming back and spending time with the kids.

I want to finish my cert 4, maybe go to uni… but ultimately to be a primary school chaplain.

Loving kids, helping them find life and hope.

t's all about finding quality family-type relationships. I was blessed to fit with my new family but was also very fortunate to find a wider church family who have loved me through the good, the bad and the ugly… well actually in my case the good , the bad and the amazingly good looking ;)

Who are Pindan and what do you do?

How did you first become aware of Parkerville Children and Youth Care?

Why have you chosen to support Parkerville Children and Youth Care?

What has been your involvement with Parkerville to date?

How do you plan to support Parkerville in 2014?

What else is on the horizon for Pindan in 2014?

Established 37 years ago, Pindan is a leading property and construction group specialising in construction and development management across a myriad of sectors throughout Western Australia. We are the largest multi-unit builder and one of the top 5 commercial builders in Perth. Our purpose is to work in partnership with our clients to create wealth for all parties through involvement in the building and property industry.

Many members of our executive team were aware, through media and other sources, of the work Parkerville Children and Youth Care is involved in. David Pringle, an owner and Director of Pindan, put forward Parkerville Children and Youth Care for consideration as Pindan’s charity for 2014/2015. The nomination was unanimously accepted by the executive team.

We believe that Parkerville Children and Youth Care is an extremely worthwhile charity, playing a very valuable role within the community. Every two years Pindan chooses a charity to support through ongoing staff fundraising programmes. In addition, Pindan undertakes to build and sell a charity home for its chosen charity. We hope and believe that this will make a difference to Parkerville Children and Youth Care.

Although our involvement with Parkerville Children and Youth Care has just begun, we have already made good progress in the planning stages of the charity home. We will be in a position to reveal more details in coming months.

We hope to begin construction of the charity home in 2014 and Pindan staff will shortly kick-off an ongoing fundraising programme that will include sausage sizzles, morning teas and raffles. In the past, we have held an annual quiz night. However, this year, we are going to try something different - a Bogan Bingo night, which promises to be a lot of fun. We hope to have a number of raffles and auctions during the bingo night, so in addition to a fun night out, participants can also walk away with some great bargains.

This looks to be an exciting year for Pindan. We have recently opened offices in Darwin and Brisbane as we expand operations into other areas of Australia.

We are currently building six multi-level apartment complexes in the Perth metro area in addition to three group housing developments - with a fourth to commence shortly.

We have also branched into the modular housing market and can manufacture modular houses and granny flats at our yard in Maddington.

We have seen an improvement in the housing market over the past year which is a positive for the group, and we continue to secure significant commercial contracts.

Pindan supports Parkerville
