St. Alphonsus Parish • Parroquia San Alfonso

Dear Friends, As we pass the “half way point” of Lent, it is worth considering whether or not we have made good use of this season which the Church has given us: to deepen our prayer life, intensify our connection with Christ, learn from the discipline of mortification, and offer tangible outreach to the poor. How many Lents have passed us by without our having really grown in our faith or strengthened our commitment to the values we hold dear? If you would benefit from a Lenten “booster shot,” consider this it! Make it a point to come to the “mini-Mission” after this Sunday’s 5pm Mass; spend time with the Lord in the Blessed Sacrament on Wednesday evening between 6:30 and 7:30; get yourself to confession; take money out of your wallet right now and put it in the poor box against the back wall of the church; stay for the 10-Minute Catechism after Mass today; wake up fifteen minutes earlier tomorrow and pray the rosary or read from the Gospel of Mark; make an effort to reach out to someone from whom you are estranged or alienated and initiate reconciliation.

In truth, you don’t need me to tell you what to do. But you may profit from a little exhortation from this column, and so if these words motivate you to get your Lent into gear, wonderful! I pray that this Easter may find us all more meaningfully connected to Christ and to one another in the faith. For this to happen, we must each do our part!

May your week reflect the encounter with Christ we experienced at Mass today!

A MESSAGE FROM the Pastor UN MENSAJE DEL Párroco

PARISH STAFF Directory

Queridos amigos:

Catholicism 101 will happen on Wednesdays, beginning on March 29 at 7:30 PM.

Who is Catholicism 101 for? Those curious about what it means to live and believe as a Catholic. Those who feel like they weren’t listening closely in eighth grade. Those who want to explore their faith as adults.

It also serves as preparation for the sacrament of confirmation for adults who have already made their First Communion. You can download a confirmation prepara-tion registration form at www.stalphonsuschgo.org or you can contact Cathy Crino at 773-525-0709 or at [email protected]

You can come to one or all. If you are not being confirmed, you don’t need to pre-register. Just come to the Lower Church on Wednesdays ready to learn, to ask questions, and to engage this living faith tradi-tion.

For full information, to go to the Catholicism 101 web page on www.stalphonsuschgo.org or con-tact Cathy Crino.

This Lent, take the time to deepen your faith….

KEEPING LENT 2006

This is the time of fulfillment. The Kingdom of God is at hand! My name is Zane Coleman. During my childhood, I was exposed to Christianity, but I never gained much interest until about 4 years ago when I came to Chicago from where I grew up in Atlanta. Throughout my life I had focused my career on the sciences, and for most of my life I was uncertain of

my faith and continued to put off answering the important underlying questions I had within myself. A colleague of mine explained how science and religion are not contra-dictory and he introduced me to books with the evidence and logic for faith in general and more spe-cifically the evidence for Christ as our Savior. As I read and learned more about Christianity I felt hap-pier and my faith began to grow.

I then found myself desiring to be a proper Christian, but I didn’t know which type of Christianity or where to start. I was seeking direction and God granted me the guidance I needed and strengthened my faith by introducing me to the love of my life, Theresa, a wonderful person and devout Catholic. After a few months of dating I joined her here at St. Alphonsus and have been at-tending mass here every Sunday for over 2 and a half years. The more I learned about Catholicism, the more my faith grew, the more I wanted to know, and the more I

wanted to join the Church by first becoming a disciple of Christ through baptism. Experiencing Mass at St. Alphonsus Church every Sunday with Theresa has brought me closer to God and I feel blessed to be a pupil of the Church, and blessed to have been instructed in faith by the staff here in the parish.

The RCIA has been a great spiritual learning experience and I am thank-ful for the wonderful insight and teachings of all of those involved with the program, including my fel-low Catechumens. Throughout the RCIA I have felt the welcoming unity and spirit within the universal Church, and in particular St. Alphonsus Church has played an important role in my spiritual life. I could think of no more important or appropriate place to profess my love and request Theresa’s hand in the sacrament of marriage than the place where we have found Christ’s union with the Church. And on Feb-ruary 26, 2006, in the upper chapel of the St. Alphonsus Rectory, she said yes.

I'm Blake Rutkowski, and I have lived in the Chicago land area all my life. I briefly left Chicago for

four years to further my education at the University of Michigan. I cur-rently work for a Insurance Broker-age in downtown Chicago called Thilman Filippini. The reason I de-cided to go through the RCIA proc-ess was to become more knowl-edgeable about the Catholic faith. I am very happy that I have gone through this process because it has opened my eyes to the Catholic faith and it has strengthened my relationship with God.

José Paredes, the son of Kim Conlon, is also preparing for baptism, confir-mation and Eucharist. He will be baptized along with 11 adults and 3 infants at the

Easter Vigil. José is a fourth grader at Alphonsus Academy and Center for the Arts.

He has been preparing with other students to receive the sacraments and has been working with his mother to learn more about bap-tism and confirmation. His answer to what would happen to him at baptism is I will lose all my sins and start out new. That, in a phrase, is the promise of Christ, so he’s got-ten it!

Operation Rice Bowl

Operation Rice Bowl is sponsored by Catholic Relief Services. Every year during Lent, we are encour-aged to take the money saved from our fasting —and donate it to those in our city and around the world who struggle to find enough to eat. This week, as you fast…. We hear from 2 Chronicles of the destruction of war and the rebuild-ing of Jerusalem. We are the spiri-tual heirs of those who lost their homes and land violently. In to-day’s world, how can you help re-build the lives of those who suffer the same disrup-tion and tribula-tion?

Fact: Immigrants are your neighbors. It is estimated that the number of undocumented immigrants living in Illinois from all parts of the world is approximately

400,000. They are subject to potential exploitation in the workplace and in other settings. They are also raising children who mostly are citizens.

Fact: Current legisla-tion proposed in Con-gress would make ille-

gal immigration a felony and also criminalize even hu-manitarian assistance to the undocumented.

Ways to become better informed about Immigration issues and policy:

• Go to www.justiceforimmigrants.org, the web site of the US Catholic Bishops

• St. Benedict is hosting a forum on Justice for Immi-grants on Wednesday, March 29 at 7:00 PM in their Social Center at Bell and Irving Park.

• St. Clement is also hosting a forum on Sunday, April 2 at 12:30 PM in their school at 2524 N. Or-chard.

Sixth, Seventh and Eighth Grades

in Religious Ed Visit Temple

Sholom

On Tuesday, March 21 the older students in the Reli-gious Education program went on a field trip to Tem-ple Sholom. The Temple is one of the oldest religious institutions in the city, as well as being a landmark on Lake Shore Drive. We were met there by Sarah Ha-nuka, the Director of Education.

All of our students spend a year studying the Hebrew Scriptures as part of their preparation for the sacra-ment of Confirmation. Of course, as Christians, our knowledge of our faith would be incomplete without knowing about the sources of our faith in the one God and the Covenant God made with the people of Israel.

When we arrived back at St. Alphonsus, we asked the students some questions about their experience.

What impressed me most? The big Torah (scrolls) and the ceiling of the sanctuary….The teacher be-cause she told us stuff we didn’t know about….That two thousand people come on the big holidays….The windows…. The temple has a fine collection of stained glass depicting the figures from the Bible.

What surprised me most? The walls move…. The technology. When I think of temples, I think of old, traditional things…. The Temple can expand its walls to accommodate the holiday crowds. They read from right to left…. How much they respect the Torah scrolls and that they bury them when they wear out….

What am I glad I learned? That Martin Luther King had been to Temple Sholom….That there is a story in every window….

Prayer

St. Bernard of Clairvaux was a monk who lived in twelfth century France. He became a famous abbot and advisor to kings and Popes. (The low point of his life was when he preached the second Crusade, and he was bitterly disappointed in the violence he had unleashed.) He was also learned, and is considered one of the foremost theologians in the church’s history. His prayers became ‘standards,’ including one to the Virgin, the Memorare, which is still recited. This is another.

Oh, how good

and pleasant a thing it is to dwell

in the Heart of Jesus! Who is there

that does not love a heart so wounded?

Who can refuse a return of love to a heart

so loving?

REFLECTIONS for Sunday The Fourth Sunday of Lent 26 March 2006

The Readings for Sunday

2 Chronicles 36:14-16, 19-23 Psalm 137

Ephesians 2:4-10 John 3:14-21

As You Go Through the Week....

2 Chronicles gives us the story of destruction and renewal. Have you seen that cycle in your own life? In what ways has God been the source of restoration and new life for you? We were each created as unique and individual. What makes you who you are? How has God fashioned the person you have become? We are created in Christ Jesus for the good works that God has prepared in advance. How have you used the gift of your creation? How is your life a return for the gift of salvation?

The Scriptures in Context

The books of Chronicles are a kind of ‘court history’ written at Jerusalem after the restoration from Exile. The Chronicler began with Adam; the passage that we hear today was recent history for its author, near the end of his work.

A great deal of the information in these books duplicates other works collected in the Scriptures (for example 1 and 2 Kings.) The Chronicler puts his own ‘spin’ on these events. He wants to show the importance of the Temple and its worship in a renewed and restored Israel.

All of that is not why we hear this passage today, the only time that this work appears in our Sunday readings. It was probably selected because it sums up the history of what led to the Exile, and to the restoration of the people of Israel in the Land.

In a sense, those turbulent events in the history of Israel are just prologue. We can see, in the vicissitudes of warring nations, God’s wish to restore the promise and the covenant. John’s gospel tells us that we see it definitively in Jesus’ incarnation, death and resurrection.

John 3:16, God so loved the world.... is one of the most quoted Scripture passages, and with good reason. It has been called the “gospel within the gospel,” the core message of God’s love and the salvation given in Christ. It has a majestic tone, to show that God has worked through the tides of history to show his care and protection. It is almost more than we can bear to realize that God risked everything to love and save humanity.

The letter to the Ephesians reminds us that this is purely a gift. None of us earned it; none of us caused it. It is given to us because we are the beloved, each the individual handiwork of God, created to share in this immeasurable grace. This passage is a good one to meditate upon in Lent, as we focus the prayers of the community on its newest members, preparing for the Easter sacraments. They are living reminders of the gift of grace.

What the Church Teaches

In the letter to the Ephesians, the author tries to communicate the absolute graciousness of the gift of God’s salvation. The gift of Christ came when we were ‘dead’, so mired in sin that we could not even know to ask for mercy. The author finds one paramount reason why we are given this gift: we are God’s handiwork. Another translation renders this as “God’s work of art.” This is not just a figure of speech. It tells us something fundamental about the whole story of creation and redemption.

There are two creation stories, in Genesis 1 and 2. The first chapter shows God’s majesty in creation. God speaks, the world is made, and it is surpassingly good. The second chapter shows a different aspect. God is a potter, intimately involved with creation. God scoops up clay and fashions this earth creature, breathing the breath of life into his nostrils. The second story is what resonates in these verses from Ephesians. God has created each one of us, as a sculptor shapes clay. We are each unique. There is no mass production here. We each bear the imprint of the artist’s hand, the evidence of an intimate connection.

There is a purpose in our creation. We are to image and to give glory to God. Yet, we can be blinded and oblivious. We may not know why we have been created, nor care. That is the stage set for the gift of Christ. Jesus is given to us. He looked like our created selves and was able to image the infinite love of the Creator. God not only imprints us upon God’s heart, God risked mockery, suffering, rejection and death to tell us of this heartbreaking love. The gift of Christ is there to shout out to us, I will hold nothing back in trying to tell you who I am and who you are! You are the beloved. I am your source, loving you more than language can express.

The reason that this verse, John 3:16, has been so often quoted is that it tells us each something about ourselves. God does not just love the world, seeing it as a blue marble in the vastness of space. God loves each one of us, each of us uniquely fashioned creatures, each of us beloved works of art. We are created for God to love. Christ does not come for some unfathomable cosmic purpose. Christ came into the world for each one of us - so that each one of can hear for ourselves that we are the object in God’s overflowing love.

The depth of that love is shown in the crucifixion. Jesus could have avoided this fate. His disciples, and even some onlookers, were full of advice about how Jesus could keep safe. Their suggestions included avoiding Jerusalem, and toning down his message. He did neither. He knew that faithfulness to God’s love meant confronting the powers of the age and preaching God’s radical love. The crucifixion was the consequence of his faithfulness. This is the message of John 3:16 - the Son is given to us, to each one of us, and that gift is a pledge and promise of God’s love. So, the crucifixion is simply that - Christ’s faithful love for each one of us. When we speak of ‘conversion’ or ‘salvation’ what we are really talking about is realizing this central truth, which is not about God and human history, but about God and each one of us.

There are scores of songs and hymns which try to help us express the emotions that we have in confronting the crucifixion. For example, When I survey the wondrous cross On which the Prince of glory died, My richest gain I count but loss, And pour contempt on all my pride. The last verse of that song speaks of the effects on the person who truly sees the cross: Were the whole realm of nature mine, That were a present far too small: Love so amazing, so divine, Demands my soul, my life, my all.

How the Church Lives Since we hear the Old Testament readings in bits and pieces over the three year lectionary cycle, it is hard to get a sense of chronology. Chronicles gives us one version, but they aren’t the most interesting books in the Bible! Here is a short run down of the most important dates: 1800 BC - the beginning of the ‘family saga’ with Abraham and Sarah. 1300 BC - Moses and the Exodus. (Dated in the reign of Rameses II in Egypt.) 1000 BC - The reign of David over the united tribes. 950 BC - Solomon builds the First Temple. 922 BC - the Kingdom splits between South and North. 721 BC - The Assyrians under Sargon II destroy the Northern Kingdom. 586 BC - The Babylonians under Nebuchadnezzar destroy the Southern Kingdom and Jerusalem, along with the Temple. The Babylonian Exile begins. 538 BC - Persia under Cyrus conquers Babylon and permits the Jews to return to Judea. They begin to rebuild the Temple.

FR. HURLBERT Musings

13 The Fourth Sunday of Lent / Cuarto Domingo de Cuaresma

W hile some of the pain of growing up may be related to our experi-ences with our parents, it is often rifts among brothers and sisters

that split a family for years. The brother who al-ways got into trouble as a child may forever be considered the “black sheep” by the rest, and may spend the rest of his life trying to prove himself to others. Or else, he may give up and accept the role imposed on him. The girl who was teased by her brothers for being overweight may develop a complex whereby she never feels attractive, no matter how good she looks later on. Experiences growing up with our brothers and sisters help form the way we relate to others. Children can be very cruel. One doesn't need to look far to see that Original Sin is a reality. The most innocent of little children can wreak psychological damage that lasts long after they forget they had ever done anything. Remember that it was likely not sparked by you, but that you may simply have been an easy target.

* * * * * * * * * * * * Forgive your siblings for the way they treated you when you (and they) were young. If they were constantly “getting in your face,” re-alize that they were going through tough times just as you were. If they were too distant, con-sider that they may have taken on a parental role to make up for what your parents didn’t supply. Forgive them for not giving you the space you needed to explore life on your own, to live your own life. Forgive them for prying, or for making fun of you. If you were to ask them, they would likely not even remember having caused the pain you still live with. Forgive them for blaming you for things you did not do. Forgive them for getting preferential treatment from your parents. The home is considered by many to be a ha-ven from society’s rules. Forgive your sisters and brothers if they took liberties with you that they never could in “polite company.” Forgive them for testing your feelings. Sometimes we practice at home before risking “out there.”

Forgive them for making demands on your time, for demanding your presence at every party and family birthday celebration. Family living can be a strain, and it can be stressful trying to al-ways do family things when you want to be on your own a little more. Many people feel pulled in a thousand different directions. The famiy is the only source of stability they have. Maintaining that stability an cultivating it may have been as important for them as perhaps it was unimpor-tant for you. On the other hand, forgive them if they need their own space right now. They may have bad memories of growing up and need some distance for that to heal. Sometimes people develop iden-tities that do not square with family expectations and need to be away in order to live their own lives. Forgive them for treating you now at age 30 in the same way they did when you were12. The teasing, the competition, the condescension, the patronizing attitude– these often remain. All can leave nasty scars.

* * * * * * * * * * *

We can usually get over rifts that occur in life between ourselves and co-workers or friends. Yet family rifts can hound us to our dying day. To place them under the doormat in our minds and simply ignore them rarely does the trick. They have a way of eating at us until we make peace, or at least try to make peace. Few things are more tragic than estrangement from parents or siblings. We can try to make peace with those with whom we grew up. We can strive to under-stand them and accept them, flaws and all. We can try to forgive.
