GOSPEL MEDITATION - ENCOURAGE DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE

Albert Einstein said that the “true measure of intelligence is not knowledge but imagination.” Being a disciple of Jesus Christ requires a great deal of imagination. It is not enough to simply attend to facts, rules and rituals and consider the job done. Quite contrarily, the Gospels demands creativity, of trying to discern how to put flesh on the Beatitudes and properly serve God’s children. Jesus never doled out a top down agenda. Not once did he ever demand conformity over conversion or sacrifice over mercy. The Gospel is always about putting people in touch with their compassionate, forgiving, and unconditionally loving God and meeting them where they are. For Jesus, it often meant breaking a few rules. Well respected and time-honored traditions had to be set aside in order to attend to what really mattered. God’s compassion, mercy and true conversion were always the trump cards. The story of the Good Samaritan, healing on the Sabbath, and bypassing of purification rituals all display this theme. Human beings can get too hung up on protocol and tradition. This is so much so that often preserving all of these things is of greater concern than the beggar knocking on our door or the sinner looking for mercy. It is no wonder, then, that we can easily become hypocritical. Many can see us on our knees in prayer while our true heart and actions, rooted in judgment and self-preservation, are hidden from others. It is a trap into which we can easily fall. Who cares how we live our lives as long as our hands are properly washed! Here enters the need for imagination and the distinction of truly being a wise and intelligent person. It takes a good measure of creativity and a lot of guts to really be a doer of God’s word and not merely a hearer. Being a person who doesn’t just tell people about God but shows people God requires courage and ingenuity. That’s why people like St. Francis of Assisi and St. Teresa of Calcutta are timeless. Their genuineness speaks volumes generation to generation. It’s risky business taking the step to allow God into our hearts. Permitting God to release us from the grip of our evil thoughts, infidelity, greed, malice, sexual improprieties, licentiousness, envy, arrogance, folly, and the like takes courage. That’s why we prefer to spend our energy rearranging the future rather than take measures to secure a foundation that is most certainly crumbling.

LPi

Urgent Call to Ministry … Will you say “Yes”

We have a need at St. Thomas for addi onal altar servers. Servers may be men and women, boys and girls. Servers must be bap zed, Roman Catholic, and ac vely prac cing their Catholic faith, and they must have received the sacrament of Holy Communion. The role of server is integral to the celebra on of Mass and we need at least one server to assist at every Mass, but ideally, we would have three or even four. At the present me, we do not have enough individuals to fill these roles for every Mass. If you have ever considered volunteering to help at Mass this might be the ministry for you. Contact Deanna Rice for more informa on. St. Thomas is in the planning stages of star ng a new ministry to those homebound for any reason, ill, disa-bled or elderly. This ministry involves contac ng the individuals by phone and/or cards, and just le ng them know that we are thinking of them. There are NO home visits involved. We would like to know if there is interest in par cipa on in such a ministry. For further informa on, contact the parish office.

Catechism Corner For Sunday, August 29th

CCC . 1786-1794 Moral Conscience

1786 -Faced with a moral choice, conscience can make either a right judgment in accordance with reason and the divine law or, on the contrary, an erroneous judgment that departs from them. 1787 -Man is some mes confronted by situa ons that make moral judgments less assured and decision difficult. But he must al-ways seriously seek what is right and good and discern the will of God expressed in divine law. 1788 -To this purpose, man strives to interpret the data of experience and the signs of the mes assisted by the virtue of pru-dence, by the advice of competent people, and by the help of the Holy Spirit and his gi s. 1789 -Some rules apply in every case: - One may never do evil so that good may result from it; - the Golden Rule: "Whatever you wish that men would do to you, do so to them."56 - charity always proceeds by way of respect for one's neighbor and his con-science: "Thus sinning against your brethren and wounding their conscience . . . you sin against Christ."57 Therefore "it is right not to . . . do anything that makes your brother stumble. 1790 -A human being must always obey the certain judgment of his conscience. 1791 -This ignorance can o en be imputed to personal responsibility. 1792 -Ignorance of Christ and his Gospel, bad example given by others, enslavement to one's passions, asser on of a mistaken no on of autonomy of conscience, rejec on of the Church's authority and her teaching, lack of conversion and of charity: these can be at the source of errors of judgment in moral conduct. 1793 -If - on the contrary - the ignorance is invincible, or the moral subject is not responsible for his erroneous judgment, the evil commi ed by the person cannot be imputed to him. 1794 -A good and pure conscience is enlightened by true faith, for charity proceeds at the same me "from a pure heart and a good conscience and sincere faith.

Compartiendo tu fe... Pregunta:

Heart Attack ~ Know the Signs and What to Do @ M_ss[g_ from our S[f_ty & S_]urity Ministry

Two major health emergencies have different warning signs. Do you know what to do? Heart a acks occur when blood flow to the heart is blocked. They are o en obvious, but at mes signs may be subtle, mimicking other health issues. A stroke occurs when blood flow to the brain is reduced. This can occur suddenly or gradually. It may be short-term, which is a warning sign not to be ignored. Remember the F.A.S.T. acronym: Face; does one side droop or is the smile asymmetrical? Arm; is one side weak or numb? Speech; is it slurred, garbled or non-existent? Time; is essen al the outcome depend on how soon medical a en on is received. In each of these situa ons, it is important to call 911 for assistance. For more informa on on these topics visit: heart.org Please remember that Safety and Security Ministry members with medical training wear red lanyards and are available to assist during emergencies. If you are interested in joining the ministry, a mee ng will be held on Sunday, September 12, 2021, immediately following the 11am mass. The mee ng will be held outdoors (KDC Pa o) and last approximately 30 minutes. Basic first aid, available medical equipment and ministry member expecta ons will be discussed. Hope to see you there!
