The Greatness of Humility : Rabbi Yosef Weinstock In Gay Talese's 1966 Esquire article "Frank Sinatra Has a Cold” the author describes a party at the home of Sinatra's former wife, at which Sinatra was acting as host. A young woman at the party, "while leaning against a table, accidentally with her elbow knocked over one of a pair of alabaster birds to the floor, smashing it to pieces." Sinatra's daughter Nancy, also a guest at the party, started to say: "Oh… that was one of my mother's favorite..." But before she could complete the sentence, Sinatra glared at her, cutting her off. While 40 other guests in the room all stared in silence, Sinatra walked over, quickly with his finger flicked the other alabaster bird off the table, smashing it to pieces, and then put an arm gently around [the young woman] and said, in a way that put her completely at ease, “That's OK, kid.” The great singer used his status to make another human being feel less small. Sinatra is not alone. Former Utah Jazz basketball great Karl Malone was once at the baggage claim area at Salt Lake City airport when a woman mistook him for a skycap and asked him to carry her bags to the car. Malone carried her bags to the car. Only when she reached in her purse to give him a tip did he explain that that was not necessary and introduced himself in a friendly manner. We are so used to important people taking out hostilities on their subordinates; on those less wealthy or powerful. That is not the Jewish way. It is not the way of a mensch, and you do not need to be Jewish to be a mensch. The Talmud (Megilah 31a) writes: אמר רבי יוחנן: כל מקום שאתה מוצא גבורתו של הקדוש ברוך הוא אתה מוצא ענוותנותו

Rabbi Yochanan said: Wherever you find the greatness of Hashem described, there you will find His humility.

The proof texts for this idea is found in Parshat Ekev (10:17-18). God is referred to as “God of gods and the Lord of the lords, the great mighty and awesome God…” and right afterwards He is referred to as “He executes the judgment of the orphan and widow, and He loves the stranger, to give him bread and clothing.” In today’s world, humility is not considered a dynamic, charismatic or impressive character trait. Yet from God Himself we learn that humility is a hallmark of greatness. Great people are humble people. They worry about all people. They involve themselves in good deeds and good works, both large and small. This is how Rashi understands the phrase: שמעון קב ת .והיה | ע Moshe is encouraging the people to be careful to fulfill and appreciate the simple and seemingly less significant mitzvot. Or as Larry Bell, 20th century industrialist once put it: Show me a man who cannot bother to do little things and I'll show you a man who cannot be trusted to do big things.

ISRAEL UPDATE August 4, 2017

Treasury Department Sanctions Key Ballistic Missile Entities in Iran

On July 28, the U.S. Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) sanctioned six Iran-based entities tied to Iran’s ballistic missile program in response to “continued provocative actions,” including the July 27 launch of the Simorgh space vehicle. “The U.S. Government will continue to aggressively counter Iran’s ballistic missile-related activity, whether it be a provocative space launch, its development of threatening ballistic missile systems, or likely support to Yemeni Houthi missile attacks on Saudi Arabia such as occurred this past weekend,” said Treasury Secretary Steven T. Mnuchin. “These sanctions target key entities involved in Iran’s ballistic missile program, and underscore the United States’ deep concerns with Iran’s continued development and testing of ballistic missiles and other provocative behavior.” The six entities— Shahid Karimi Industries, Shahid Rastegar Industries, Shahid Cheraghi Industries, Shahid Varamini Industries, Shahid Kalhor Industries, and Amir Al Mo’Menin Industries—are all subordinates of Shahid Hemmat Industrial Group (SHIG), a key entity in Iran’s ballistic missile program. SHIG is also currently sanctioned by the United States, United Nations and European Union.

Dvar Torah : Rav James

As the summer is drawing to an end many of us, including my family, had the opportunity to spend time at one of the many Jewish Summer Camps. We personally had the opportunity to join 90 other campers & staff at Moshavet Stone. The experience made me reflect on when I was a child at Bnei Akiva UK summer & winter Machane (camp) –playing football (soccer), rugby, doing arts and crafts, learning from amazing Chinuch staff. Remember back to what is was like to sleep in bunks (tents in BAUK) with all your friends? Staying up too late, playing flashlight tag, and making too much noise… and of course, who can forget the meals --- people said they were terrible but in truth I remember them as not being so bad. I remember sitting with my friends after the meal, and singing Birkat Hamazon. We sang with tremendous energy. We created so much Ruach. It wasn't that we understood exactly why we’re saying the prayer --- we had just eaten to our hearts content and we were satisfied. We knew at home we rushed through it on Shabbat but at Machane we sang it at every meal as loud as we could. Parshat Ekev commands us to carry out the Miztvah of Birkat Hamazon "When you have eaten your fill, give thanks to the L-rd you G-d for the good land which He has given you." We are commanded to recite four brachot (3 Biblically) after eating bread: (1) A bracha for provision of nourishment (Birkat HaZan); (2) A bracha for the inheritance of the Land of Israel (Birkat HaAretz); (3) A bracha for the building of Jerusalem (Birkat Boneh Yerushalayim); (4) A bracha for the blessing for being good and doing good (Birkat HaTov V’HaMeitiv) In Brachot 48b, the Rabbis teach in a Braita from that one verse in Devarim 8:10 we derive the different brachot within Birkat HaMazon: From the words: “Veachalta vesavata uveirachta” (You shall eat and be satisfied and bless) we derive Birkat HaZan, from “et Hashem elokecha” (your God) we derive the mitzva to make a Zimmun, from “al haaretz” (for the Land) we derive Birkat HaAretz, from the word “hatova” (the good) we derive Birkat Boneh Yerushalayim as it says in Devarim 3:25: “the good mountain” (which is Har HaBayit, the Temple Mount), from “asher natan lach” (that He gave you) we derive Birkat HaTov V’HaMeitiv. Birkat HaMazon goes well beyond a thank you for the food that has been consumed. At its core, Birkat HaMazon provides a model for us to express our appreciation for life's blessings. What are these blessings? What in our daily life do we take for granted? Is it our parents and grandparents, our sibling and friends, the fact we have the ability to practice Judaism without any restrictions, our Jewish Education, whether school, camp or community programs? Is it the fact we are able to travel and live in Israel freely? Perhaps it is all of these things and more. While all of these are truly blessings, and many of us can say that we have these blessings, having these blessings is not enough. How could we want more? It's not so much a matter of wanting more as it is a matter of appreciating the blessings that you have. To quote Oprah "Be thankful for what you have, you'll end up having more, if you concentrate on what you don't have, you will never, ever have enough." I think Oprah really expresses the idea behind Birkat Hamazon and the fact that it is not simply a Grace after meals. In our life we need to look at everything we have around us and be thankful for it. We can only truly be satisfied when we can reflect and appreciate everything wonderful around us. If we can learn from our summer camp experience and do it also with true Ruach then we will "end up having more" than we expect.
