However, the text does not read ‘his eleven sons’ it reads ‘his eleven childrenso the Vilna Gaon asks, from where do we know that it was Dina who was missing, perhaps it was one of the sons? Ultimately, the Vilna Gaon teaches that the fact that the Temple was in due course built in the territory of the tribe of Binyamin is proof that none of the other brothers merited the Temple in their territory because they all must have bowed down to Esav (Binyamin was the only son who had not yet been born so he surely did not bow to him); thus, the other 11 brothers comprise the ‘eleven children’ who do bow to Esav. The question of where Dina’s whereabouts still remains; however, a message of the Vilna Gaon’s teaching is that assumptions of gender derived from non-gender specific language can be erroneous and impede the potential richness of meaning found in the Torah’s teachings for all of בני ישראלthe Children of Israel. SHALOM AND WELCOME … to Jerusalem's premier egalitarian Masorti (Conservative) synagogue. Beit Knesset Moreshet

Yisrael is made up of English speaking olim and native Israelis. Locals and tourists attend our shul on

Beit Knesset Moreshet Yisrael is that meeting place.

PARSHAT VAYISHLACH - וישלחפרשת In anticipation of the possibility of an unwelcome reunion with his brother Esav, Yaakov removes his

family from the encampment which could come under attack, And he got up that night and took his two

wives, his two handmaids, and his eleven children - ַאַחד ָעָשר, ְיָלָדיו -ְוֶאת– and crossed the Jabbok ford.

(Genesis 32:23) Rashi asks the question: where was Dina, after all, Yaakov has 12 children – 11 sons

and a daughter, Dina? However, the text does not read ‘his eleven sons’ it reads ‘his eleven children’ –

so the Vilna Gaon asks, from where do we know that it was Dina who was missing, perhaps it was one

of the sons? Ultimately, the Vilna Gaon teaches that the fact that the Temple was in due course built in

the territory of the tribe of Binyamin is proof that none of the other brothers merited the Temple in

their territory because they all must have bowed down to Esav (Binyamin was the only son who had

not yet been born so he surely did not bow to him); thus, the other 11 brothers comprise the ‘eleven

children’ who do bow to Esav. The question of where Dina’s whereabouts still remains; however, a

message of the Vilna Gaon’s teaching is that assumptions of gender derived from non-gender specific

language can be erroneous and impede the potential richness of meaning found in the Torah’s

teachings for all of בני ישראל– the Children of Israel. Rabbi Adam Frank
