In her thesis, A qualitative study of the values that underpin anticipated reproductive human cloning and
enhancement through gene editing, the promovenda utilised qualitative methods in uncovering the
underpinning value judgements regarding recent biotechnological advances allowing humans to be cloned
and genes edited. Concerns common to gene editing and reproductive cloning centred on domino effects
including intrinsic and pervasive human qualities by which the identity of individuals and society may be
profoundly changed. Concerns also emerged about equitable access and potentially increasing the gap
between the ‘haves’ and the ‘have-nots’. Regarding reproductive cloning, participants underscored that a
person should be valued as a person with dignity regardless of whether conceived conventionally, through
in vitro fertilisation, or cloning. Knowing which values underpin responses to these biotechnological
advances and what these values are about, may inform ethical deliberations, regulations, and future studies.

In her thesis, Assessment of end-of-life decision-making capacity and related values in older people with
serious mental illness, the promovenda used a cognitive screen and a semi-structured decision-making
capacity assessment, followed by administration of the standardised assessment of capacity to consent to
treatment. The aim was to assess the end-of-life decision-making capacity and related values of people older
than 60 years of age and diagnosed with a serious mental illness. This novel quantitative South African study,
in a particularly vulnerable population, found that two-thirds of participants had decision-making capacity
and could engage in end-of-life discussions. Chronological age and diagnostic categories should never be
used as reasons for discrimination or to presume incapacity. Healthcare providers must optimise decision-
making capacity and initiate advance care planning discussions. This will enable the provision of optimal,
humane end-of-life care in keeping with personal preferences and values, even to the most vulnerable.

In her thesis, A sustainable model for the provision of youth-friendly sexual and reproductive health services
in Kenya, the promovenda developed a sustainable model through a convergent mixed method design and
guided by the socio-ecological framework. The developed model has five components: creating awareness,
decentralisation, mobilisation of the resources, prioritisation, and continuous monitoring and evaluation of
the YFSRH services. For successful implementation of the model, the researcher recommends a shift from
the current integrated approach in favour of a multi-sectoral approach to the provision of YFSRH services.
The model has implications for Kenyan YFSRH policies and practice.

In her thesis, Spirit possession as a mental illness: A phenomenological study in the Gauteng province, the
promovenda utilised the six steps of hermeneutic phenomenological research to investigate how spirit-
possession is understood and managed in the mental health care institutions in the Gauteng Province of
South Africa. The findings revealed that spirit-possession is understood to be both a pathological and a non-
pathological spiritual illness. It is not classified under the standardised assessment instrument (DSM-5). With
the help of mental healthcare providers and traditional healthcare practitioners, the candidate developed
guidelines to be used at mental healthcare institutions to identify manifestations presented by spirit-
possessed persons to make timeous referrals to the relevant traditional practitioners.

In his thesis, Physical activity levels and patterns of children with cerebral palsy and the effect of intervention:
Framework for rehabilitation practice in Gauteng schools, the created a generic school implementation
framework to improve physical activity among children with cerebral palsy (CP) in special schools regardless
of their ambulatory status. A three-phase complex mixed-methods approach following an exploratory
sequential design was adopted. A school-based physical activity framework to improve physical activity
together with a separatory funnel physical activity framework for Gauteng special schools was developed.
The frameworks can be adapted by special schools and executive management to improve the levels and
patterns of physical activity of children with disabilities, particularly CP. This research contributes to raising
awareness of public health issues that relate to physical activity for children in special schools and provide
the latter an opportunity to effectively organise healthcare services and target mass participation.

In his thesis, Use of e-cigarettes and evidence-based cessation aids among South African smokers, the
promovendus examined e-cigarette advertising in South Africa, analysed the spatial distribution of vape
shops across the country, evaluated the effectiveness of e-cigarettes in helping smokers quit, and explored
differential costs associated with daily cigarette vs e-cigarette use. The results showed that e-cigarettes are
widely advertised by different media and environments in South Africa, especially those that are youth-
oriented. Approximately 1,09 million South Africans aged 16 and older reported daily or occasional use of
an e-cigarette in 2018. Contrary to claims by e-cigarette companies, the costs associated with daily e-
cigarette use exceeded those for daily cigarette smoking, and e-cigarettes were not effective as a long-term
cessation aid. This study has the potential to contribute to the national discourse regarding e-cigarette
regulation under the proposed Control of Tobacco Products and Electronic Delivery Systems Bill.

In her thesis, Air pollution source apportionment and joint effects on mortality in Cape Town, South Africa,
the promovenda observed that PM2.5 levels exceeded the daily World Health Organisation guidelines 14
times during the one-year sampling period. The identified local sources of PM2.5 in the city are industrial
activities, biomass burning, traffic emissions, sea salt, diesel combustion, and soil/mineral dust mixtures. In
addition, pollutants from industrial activities outside the city contributed to PM2.5 levels. Infants and children
are at higher risk of negative health outcomes from exposure to PM2.5 than adults. The case-crossover
epidemiological study revealed that the interactions of pollutant mixtures particularly PM10, NO2, and SO2
presented a 20% increased risk in humans of dying from respiratory diseases and cardiovascular diseases.
These findings contribute to monitoring the progress of sustainable development goals. The results can
inform policy reviews and mitigation strategies to reduce air pollution impacts.

In his thesis, Developing a programme to educate young children about malaria to effect behavioural
change through a song, the promovendus evaluated and compared intervention strategies to improve
knowledge about malaria prevention in Grade 3 learners, teachers, and parents or caregivers in a high-risk
malaria region in South Africa. The two-phase study used pre- and post-intervention questionnaires to
determine knowledge base and knowledge growth. Phase 1 compared three interventions: a culturally and
age-appropriate song, a drama, and a song and drama combination against a control group that received
no intervention. The song-only intervention was found to be most effective. Phase 2 then compared the
song intervention group to a control group, which confirmed the effectiveness of the song-only intervention.
The study found that a culturally and age-appropriate song about malaria supported memory retention of
knowledge regarding malaria prevention in all who learnt the song.

In his thesis, The interpolation and regression of air quality data from air quality monitoring stations to
patients' home address to perform a supervised self-organizing map classifying asthma outcome, the
promovendus applied artificial intelligence, particularly the use of artificial neural networks called Kohonen
self-organising maps (SOM) to classify disease outcomes given environmental exposures. The study utilised
the clinical records of patients who presented with acute asthma at health facilities. The clinical
presentations were mapped to environmental exposures, particularly NO₂, SO₂, and PM₁₀. The candidate’s
successful computation of multivariate imputations using chain equations contributed novel techniques to
dealing with missing air quality data. Geocoding of patients’ physical addresses to determine their
environmental exposure using geospatial analytical techniques solved the challenge of exposure
assessment in environmental health research. The successfully developed supervised SOM identified age,
gender, and SO₂ as potent predictors of acute exacerbations. His study contributed to computational
epidemiology.

In her thesis, An assessment of healthcare workers' health, happiness and motivation in the context of
health systems strengthening in Kenya: the case of Meru County, the promovenda, applied a mixed-methods
approach to explore the factors that influence healthcare workers’ health, happiness, and motivation. The
findings showed that micro-level (individual), meso-level (health facility), and macro-level (health system)
factors significantly contribute to healthcare workers’ well-being. The happier, healthier, and more motivated
healthcare workers are, the better the quality and efficiency of healthcare service delivery. The researcher
created an evidence-based conceptual framework for healthcare workers’ well-being, illustrating the impact
of micro-, meso-, and macro-level factors on healthcare workers’ health, happiness, and motivation. To
sustainably optimise the performance and resilience of the national and county health systems, the
policymakers ought to develop and implement policies and programmes aimed at promoting health
workers’ happiness, health, and motivation.

In his thesis, Development of a framework to improve surveillance and response systems for neglected
tropical diseases at the sub-national level in Kenya, the promovendus developed a framework to strengthen
existing surveillance and response systems for preventive chemotherapy neglected tropical diseases (PC-
NTDs). Using a concurrent triangulation mixed design, he identified generalised and disease-specific
recommendations by undertaking a systematic literature review and primary data surveys, which informed
the framework components for strengthening PC-NTDs surveillance system functions. He further
investigated the feasibility of implementing the recommended actions at a sub-national level based on
healthcare stakeholders’ perspectives. The study culminated in the development and validation of a context-
specific framework, which provides a logical approach to achieve effective PC-NTDs control through reduced
costs for treatment interventions, halted disease transmission, and reduced disease burden. The framework
is a timely contribution to global efforts to halt disease transmission and eventually eliminate neglected
tropical diseases.
