that information was received from a e able source to vthe effect that prior to 1933 a Comunist Internationale + COMINTERN! and other Soviet apparate were very active in -gathering intelligence information in the Fer East. Hanginternational Gomunist functionaries were stationd in

Shanghai and Canton, China, for the purpose of gatheringintelligence information, One of the means of communica-tion used by these individuals to contact Central Head-quarters in Moscow was through the use of telegrams, Suchtelegrams, which were always coded, were never sentdirectly to Moscow, but were sent to agents in othercountries such as Egypt and France where they were re-copied and forwarded to telegram addresses or "drops"in Berlin, Germany. According to T-l, one of these telegramaddresses was the office of ALBERT EINSTEIN in Berlin, andthis address proved to be very successful inasmuch asEINSTEIN received a great quantity of mail, telegrams andcablegrams from all over the world. EINSTEIN's personalsecretary, whose identity was not known to T-1, gave thetelegrams to a Soviet Courier, whose duty it was to pickup such mail from several telegram "drops" and then channelthe mail to neseewfmd

92"EINSTEIN's Berlin office allegedly employed at

least two female secretaries, both of whom were Communistsympathigers, The exact period EINSTEIN's office was usedas an address for coded cables by Soviet Intelligence wasnot known. However, EINSTEIN's cable address was alreadyin action as of 1929. The reason for the use of EINBTEIN'ecable address was due to the quantity of legal cable trafficwhich he received due to his established international

reputation, which in turn provided a relatively innocuouscover for illegal comunications. The person in EINSTEIN:office through whom arrangements were made for the use ofthe cable address, was EINSTEIN: chief secretary at thetime, However, T-l did not know the identity or backgroundof the secretary in question. This individual wasallegedly EINSTEIN's senior and private secretary, atleast during the period 1929 to 1931. This person wasallegedly closely associated with the irirnationalapparate funetionary of Soviet Russia. 92%,¢./
