Talking Trees Detailed Costings
Nest Box Installation and Script – the voice from each nest box is set to random play so each box doesn’t offer the same information at the same time as
visitors meander past.
Messages from nest box speaker include;
1. Zoos Victoria (including Werribee Open Range Zoo) is the world’s first zoo to be certified Carbon
Neutral.
2. Zoos Victoria has been carbon neutral since 2011.
3. Our carbon offsets protects forests in Kenya, Tasmania and Borneo.
4. We have over 600kW (kilowatts) of solar PV installed on-site at our 3 zoos.
5. This is equivalent to taking 217 cars off the road; driving a car 124 times round the world; or
powering 136 average Australian households.
6. Werribee Open Range Zoo have installed 200kW of solar panels.
7. 263 megawatts of renewable energy is produced on site every year.
8. 20% of Werribee Open Range Zoo’s electricity is produced on site.
9. 310 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent is reduced from this zoo through our solar PVs very year.
10. This is equivalent to taking 72 cars off the road; driving a car 41 times round the world; or
powering 45 average Australian households.
11. Inspired by the Boab tree, these solar trees hold up 20kW of bifacial semitransparent solar panels.
12. These trees are not connected to the electricity grid.
13. Power from these trees are stored in batteries to be used for lighting and charging electric
buggies.
14. Shadows from the centre tin dome represents the African star constellations.
15. These trees are made from 100% reclaimed timber. Sourced from old wharfs and buildings.
16. Our zoos strive for Zero Waste to Landfill.
17. We do not have any landfill bins in our zoos.
18. All organic waste is composted on site at our zoos.
19. Soft plastics waste is recycled into furniture and other wood replacement products for us to use.
20. We have eliminated single-use plastic bottles from our food outlets.
21. We do not supply single-use plastics bags.
22. We do not supply single-use plastic straws, plates and cutlery.
23. We use recycled water at Werribee Open Range Zoo and Melbourne Zoo
24. All paper products at our zoos are 100% recycled paper to ensure no new trees are needed.
25. Our zoos have a certified Environmental Management System compliant to the ISO 14001
standard.
