Four stages to a good install

• Prerequisite Installer (prerequisiteinstaller.exe)• Don’t forget the forgotten Prereqs• http://www.toddklindt.com/sp2013forgottenprereqs

• Installing the bits (setup.exe)• If you have any hot fixes, service packs, or language packs

now is the time to install them

• Configure the bits (grey wizard/PowerShell if you’re cool)• Farm Configuration (white wizard or

PowerShell/Central admin)

Page 5: Part II: SharePoint 2013 Administration by Todd Klindt and Shane Young - SPTechCon

Prerequisite install

• Run prerequisiteinstaller.exe from the SharePoint DVD• Adds IIS and application server role to Windows and

configures them• Downloads and installs all necessary software• Can be manually downloaded and installed if no internet access

available. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc262485.aspx• Actually doesn’t work

• You can install from predownloaded location. Use /? To get syntax

• No matter what you should always run Prerequisite installer and get it to say successful before you run setup• If you have already installed everything manually it will skip

those steps

Forgotten Patches

• Windows 2012• KB 2765317

• Windows 2008 R2• KB 2554876• KB 2708075• KB 2759112

• Very quick to install

Page 8: Part II: SharePoint 2013 Administration by Todd Klindt and Shane Young - SPTechCon

Setup.exe

• Pretty straightforward• You can do the install on all of the

servers in the farm at the same time • You should be logged in as the

sp_install account for this step• Must be local administrator on all SharePoint

Servers• Must have SQL Server roles of dbcreator,

securityadmin, and public

• Service account guidelines• http://www.toddklindt.com/SP2013ServiceAccounts

What is next

• If you have any hot fixes, service packs, language packs, or office web apps now is the time to install them• Once you are done with those pieces then it

is time to create the farm

Additional servers?

• Wait until first server is done• Run grey wizard on each server• Enter the passphrase• Finish the wizard• You can do servers 2 through N at the same time. They will

take turns adding themselves to the farm. No fear of deadlocks. Everybody shares like they were taught in Kindergarten.

Page 16: Part II: SharePoint 2013 Administration by Todd Klindt and Shane Young - SPTechCon

Another thought on Search

• Search is heavy this time around• Pretty certain it was an only child• First piece you should pull out of the farm

Page 17: Part II: SharePoint 2013 Administration by Todd Klindt and Shane Young - SPTechCon

Office Web Apps

• Read only is free for the world • Edit costs money• They MUST be installed on their own server• Hardware requirements aren’t awful
