HISTORY OF THE GAMES The first BC Summer Games was hosted by Penticton in 1978.  The first BC Winter Games was hosted by Kamloops in 1979.  Maple Ridge in the past has hosted the 1983 and the 1998 (jointly with Pitt Meadows) as well as the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows 2009 BC Disability Games. Maple Ridge 2020 BC Summer Games will mark the 32nd Summer Games.

THE BC GAMES SOCIETY The BC Summer and Winter Games are managed by a registered non-profit society and provincial crown agency located in Victoria, BC.  The BC Games Society is guided by a community-based Board of Directors and a provincially appointed President and CEO.  To conduct the summer and winter games the Society receives 70% of its funding from the Province of BC.  The remainder of the funds are solicited from corporate and community partners in the host community. Each hosting community creates their own non-profit host society and appoints a President, Vice President and Board of Directors to guide the planning, management and delivery of the Games.  All members of the host society are community-minded volunteers.  Michael Keenan is the President and Tom Bowen the Vice-President of the Maple Ridge 2020 BC Summer Games.

GOAL OF THE MAPLE RIDGE 2020 BC SUMMER GAMES Vision: We strive to deliver fair, inclusive and safe experiences through sport. Mission: The Maple Ridge 2020 BC Summer Games Society is the grassroots organization that will facilitate the BC Summer Games. We build on the expertise and support of our local community to create development opportunities for athletes, coaches, officials, volunteers and our community legacy.

Goals: The goals of the Maple Ridge 2020 BC Summer Games is to provide BC athletes with: •       Amulti-sportgamesexperiencetopreparethemforfuture multi-sportopportunities.•       Acompetitiveexperienceinpreparationforfuturenational and international competitions.•      AvaluabledevelopmentalopportunityforourBCathletes, coaches, officials, and provincial sport organizations.

PARTICIPANTS It is anticipated that the Maple Ridge 2020 BC Summer Games will host 3,700 participants who will participate in 18 different sports. The average age of the athletes is 14.5 years old.    To support the planning and execution of the BC Summer Games it will require over 2,800 community volunteers. Volunteers are needed to support a wide variety of activities including accommodation, food services, transportation, medical support, marketing, logistics, administration, registration and sports venue management.
