!Introduction to Reading Friends for potential test projects

What is Reading Friends?

Reading Friends is an exciting new UK-wide project that will empower, engage and connect isolated older people through reading. Reading Friends brings together volunteers (“Reading Champions”) and vulnerable and isolated older people, including people with dementia and their carers (“Reading Friends”) through shared reading.

Reading Friends will develop shared reading powered by the social activism of participants and volunteers. It is a truly co-produced model developed with partners and co-produced with older people including people with dementia and their carers.

Reading Friends was developed in response to the evidence that for older people the benefits of a shared reading programme could be huge. Reading for pleasure empowers; it keeps us learning and mentally active, it can reduce or slow cognitive decline, takes us off into another world and reduces stress, give us a way of exploring experiences through fictional worlds and something to talk about and share with others. It can even change the way the brain work.

The project is run by The Reading Agency and has just started. A full copy of the project bid is available on request by emailing: [email protected]

!Dear all,

!As promised we are now asking for expressions of interest to participate in the test phase of Reading Friends. Organisations on the advisory board are welcome to apply, although please note that we are interested in projects in specific locations who are developing local partnerships, rather than national projects at this stage. Please could you also circulate to anyone you think would be interested in your networks?

!This EOI is for projects in England only, Scotland and Wales.

! 2

Page 4: Partnership Newsletter - West Sussex Connect to Support€¦ · 60 Farringdon Ln, London EC1R 3GA ! Finally, I just wanted to let you know about another project we have been working

!The deadline for expressions of interest is 9th December and you or any interested party can contact me by email at any time to ask about the process etc.

!I will be putting paper copies of this in the post to those who have requested paper correspondence and paper applications will also be considered. They should be sent to:

Dear Care Provider, !Further to our email to you all on 10 August, we wanted to update you on how the Midhurst and Petworth care worker recruitment and retention campaign is developing. !We’ve managed to speak to a number of you recently about the campaign so thank you for all your contributions. This has really helped us develop what we are planning to do. !The six week campaign will run from 7 November until 16 December 2016. During that time we will be promoting and encouraging the local population to consider a career in care and to attend one of the events we have booked. Our aim is to generate more interest in the sector and to increase the numbers of people recruited. !Promotions We have developed a number of materials to support the campaign. These can all be found on our website here www.westsussex.gov.uk/jobsincare (scroll down to the ‘materials’ section). We will send you a selection of the promotional material out to you next week so you can make use of it alongside your own recruitment plans. It will really help that people can see the connection of the branding of this campaign with your own business. !Just so you know what to expect here are the promotions we have organised so far:

• Two recruitment events – see below for more information • Using our Fire Service Information Bus in Midhurst town centre to promote

working in care on 7 December • Beginning of October there was a four page pull out supplement in

Connections – a WSCC newspaper that gets delivered to every household across West Sussex

• Week beginning 31 October – a four page, pull out supplement in Vantage – a magazine distributed by Royal Mail to every household in Midhurst and Petworth

• From next week, roadside banners promoting the recruitment events • 10 November - two page advert in Midhurst and Petworth Observer • Press Release being issued this week to local media and letter to the Editors

in local and surrounding newspapers • Poster displays, and magazine supplement distributed across the whole area • A direct mail using our postcard, targeted to hundreds of households in both

areas • Social media advertising promoting the recruitment events and the campaign • Postcards to appear in all the local schools book bags to promote to parents

who may be interested in working in care

! 5

Page 7: Partnership Newsletter - West Sussex Connect to Support€¦ · 60 Farringdon Ln, London EC1R 3GA ! Finally, I just wanted to let you know about another project we have been working

!Events We are putting on two recruitment events:

• The Leconfield Hall, Market Square, Petworth, West Sussex, GU28 0AH - Wednesday 23 November 2-5pm

• The Grange, Bepton Road, Midhurst, West Sussex, GU29 9HD - Wednesday 7 December 2-5pm

If you would be interested in attending the events please contact [email protected]. Even you are not able to attend we would still welcome information about your vacancies so we can let people know about them. !Your details for our website And finally we will be giving out a website address for people to find out more about working in care and the jobs that are available. We are keen to make sure that people can easily contact providers if they want to enquire about a job. We currently have a listings page of our care and support at home framework providers, but given the nature of this campaign which wants to support all providers in one community, we are going to change this slightly and would like to make sure we have all of your contact details too. !If you are happy for us to include your information, please could you send back to [email protected] the following details: !Your address: Your phone number: Your email: Your website: Types of roles you have available: Which areas you cover: !We will be in touch throughout the campaign to see if the promotions and events are making a difference. Please do come back to either Michelle, Sarah or Melanie if there is anything else you would like to discuss. !Kind regards !Michelle Crowley – Communications Manager ([email protected]) Sarah Saych – Commissioning Manager ([email protected]) Melanie Fitzgerald – HR Consultant & Event Co-ordinator ([email protected]) !West Sussex County Council !!

!Dear Partner

!I am carrying out some research with regards to the Care Certificate and would welcome your views and experiences.

! 7

Page 9: Partnership Newsletter - West Sussex Connect to Support€¦ · 60 Farringdon Ln, London EC1R 3GA ! Finally, I just wanted to let you know about another project we have been working

!I welcome responses via email by the 30th of November 2016 in order that I can analyse the data, and move forward with my research.

!1. What kind of service do you provide? Residential, Domiciliary,

Personal Assistants,

!2. How many staff have joined your organisation since April 2016 who

were new to care, and needed to embark on the Certificate?

!3. Do you download paper documents for new staff to complete the

Care Certificate?

!4. Which site did you down load these documents from? Skills for

Care, Eils, Other?

!5. Did the staff complete their Care Certificate in a timely manner?

!6. Did you find it highlighted any further training needs?

!7. How did you do this?

!8. Was the Certificate signed off within a prompt time frame?

!An online assessment tool can be accessed easily via computer, tablet or smart phone. It can log all evidence simply. If a learner answers incorrectly they can be guided to areas to re-inforce their knowledge.

! 8

Page 10: Partnership Newsletter - West Sussex Connect to Support€¦ · 60 Farringdon Ln, London EC1R 3GA ! Finally, I just wanted to let you know about another project we have been working

Modules can be completed in bite size chunks so it is not so overwhelming. Evidence of progress, completion, and ongoing development can be provided as part of your inspection by CQC.

9. If there was an online assessment tool available to you and your organisation - would you consider using it?

!Thank you for taking time to respond, Karen Pirks

!ACCESSING THE GATEWAY

!In order to support you to use the L &D Gateway to it’s full potential we are providing some quick reminders and hints and tips.

• Where an event is fully booked, please click the “request a place on the waiting –list” button. This helps us work out what the demand for a specific course is and helps us plan future courses, plus you may also be offered a space if a cancellation is received.

!• If you want to independently register for a course (for example a

you are a PA). You need to change to requiring a “User account”. This will ensure that the acknowledgement comes directly to you and the agreement is with you. So if you cancel within the agreed timescales you will not be charged for the course.

!• If you are part of an establishment then you will need your line

managers approval.

!• Event bookings are easy to request and can be completed with

only 3 mouse clicks, however, if you need additional support with

! 13

Page 15: Partnership Newsletter - West Sussex Connect to Support€¦ · 60 Farringdon Ln, London EC1R 3GA ! Finally, I just wanted to let you know about another project we have been working

accessing the L&D Gateway especially for the first time then – please contact [email protected] or call 01243 756834 where our admin support team will be happy to help.

!• Remember you must have received a confirmation of your booking

before attending an event, a confirmation of a Reserve List Booking is not confirmation of your event space.

!• Please remember to add your mobile telephone number to your

account contact details in My Learning – this will enable us to send text alerts and information about your event bookings especially if there are any late changes directly to your mobile.

!• I would like to run sessions on working through some of the e-

learning and will begin a pilot to trial this. Please can you let me know if you feel this would improve your use of the Gateway.

!• Remember the courses are funded by WSCC for the PVI sector but

charges will apply for cancelling an event space within 10 days of the event date or if you do not attend on the day.

!!!!For your Information: !

Accessible Information Standard has come into force !1 August 2016 - 09:52 !!New framework will ensure clearer health and care information for disabled people and their carers. !People with disabilities will benefit from improved health and care after new requirements come into force today, ensuring they receive easily accessible information and support. !The Accessible Information Standard aims to ensure that people who have a disability, impairment or sensory loss are provided with information that they can easily read or understand with support so they can communicate effectively with services. Examples of the types of support that might be required include large print, braille or using a British Sign Language (BSL) interpreter. !All organisations that provide NHS care or adult social care are required to follow the new standard, including NHS Trusts and Foundation Trusts, and GP practices. As part of the accessible information standard, these organisations must do five things: •Ask people if they have any information or communication needs, and find out how to meet their needs. •Record those needs clearly and in a set way. •Highlight or ‘flag’ the person’s file or notes so it is clear that they have information or communication needs and how those needs should be met.

•Share information about people’s information and communication needs with other providers of NHS and adult social care, when they have consent or permission to do so. •Take steps to ensure that people receive information which they can access and understand, and receive communication support if they need it. !The Accessible Information Standard took more than two years to develop overseen by NHS England, working in partnership with the Health and Social Care Information Centre and with a range of charities including the RNIB, Action on Hearing Loss, Sense, CHANGE and independent patient representatives. The standard was published in July 2015, meaning that organisations then had a year to get everything in place to be able to meet the requirements of the Standard by 31st July 2016. !Anu Singh, Director of Patient and Public Participation at NHS England, said: “Good quality, accessible health and care information is essential, particularly for patients with the greatest needs. We must strive for equality across the health service and this new framework will help patients with disabilities receive improved standards of care and be more involved in how that care is delivered.” www.england.nhs.uk
