Clay Mouser,

Bardstown, KY

Clay Mouser is a Sophomore at WKU majoring in Accounting with a minor in Computer Science. Clay is one of two Sodexo interns

participating in WKU’s Learn-and-Earn Program, an initiative that connects WKU students with businesses in the community to gain experience, build professional relationships, and develop skills. Clay’s internship with Sodexo has focused on reducing food waste and electronic waste at WKU by expanding composting operations and improving Surplus sales. “This internship has expanded my ‘life resume.’ I didn’t know anything about composting when I started this internship. Now I know almost everything about it — and I’ve learned that I really enjoy it!” Working in Facilities has deepened his understanding of campus operations and added value to his student experience at WKU. “Working on campus requires that I be physically present on campus, which has encouraged me to be more involved on campus.” Clay continues, “My work ethic has strengthened as a result of participating in this program, as well.” Goals for the remainder of his internship are to gain a deeper understanding of accounting principles employed by Facilities at WKU.

Cable Wilson

Owensboro, KY

Cable Wilson is a Junior majoring in Finance with a Pathway in Financial Planning. Cable is also participating in WKU’s Learn-and-Earn Program.

Cable feels that his internship with Sodexo, “has shown me a side of campus operations that I never knew about before, such as composting and Surplus. I’ve learned how departments, people, and organizations are connected.” Throughout his first semester in the program, Cable strengthened his time-management skills, learning how to balance academic demands with his work schedule and social life. Cable added, “Working cooperatively with others is essential in this position; it requires frequent coordination and effective communication. This internship has helped me develop these skills and cultivate a ‘teamwork’ mindset.” As Cable begins his second semester in the program, he asserts, “In my position, I represent WKU, Facilities, and Sodexo. This accountability has inspired me to become a better student and a harder worker. His goals for the remainder of this Internship are to implement new scale operations at the Farm, and to increase sales in Surplus.

Supports the WKU Learn and Earn Program

SUSTAINABILITY

Building automation systems (BAS) make it easier than ever to manage the day-to-day operations of campus buildings, allowing technicians to remotely monitor and adjust building conditions. When properly configured, a BAS reduces the institution’s energy and utility expenses, improves performance and maximizes the lifespan of buildings and equipment. However, a BAS that is not optimally configured and managed can diminish the system’s value and lead to costly energy expenditures.

Sodexo’s Building Analytics ensures that the BAS operates at peak efficiency. Using a sophisticated plug-in device, Sodexo can tap into multiple building control systems to collect and categorize data, run algorithms and monitor performance. After creating these benchmarks, Sodexo identifies opportunities for improved efficiency, such as scheduling issues,

equipment and sensor failures and issues related to installation errors.

Sodexo performs this initial analysis at no cost to the institution. Once we have identified cost-saving opportunities, our fee structure is based on a percentage of the cost savings created in the first three years. After three years, the institution retains all cost savings, which can be diverted to other important campus priorities.

Sodexo’s Building Analytics quickly identifies current and potential issues and areas of waste, leading to myriad positive outcomes, including significant utility cost savings, fewer service calls and extended lifespan of buildings and equipment. Students, faculty and staff enjoy enhanced quality of life on campus through more pleasant physical environments and faster resolution when issues do arise.

Reducing Energy Costs and Optimizing Performance with Building Analytics

Improperly configured building management

systems account for up to 20% of a building’s

total energy usage.

WKU had a strong line of storms come thru during the month of November with 40-50 mph

winds. While this helped to knock most of the leaves off the trees, the crew had to stop

leaf collection , in order to unblock several drains around campus. No flood damaged

occurred from the storm, however we did have one drain that was severally blocked and

flooded one of the commuter parking lots.

Grounds doing what

they do to keep our

campus beautiful!
