On Collaboration between Academe and CSOs

• The Academe and CSOs individually have their own strengths• Academe has the expertise in methodology and theoretical content• CSOs have the local knowledge (communities of practice and

empirical data) and means to take action

• Working together, they can leverage on their own strengths and advance causes better than any single one of them can

• Academe is distinct from CSOs but this is sometimes blurred• But we absolutely need to work together at this time

Presentation Notes

We are in ‘uncharted territory’

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Basic democratic values and human rights are under siege everywhere (by the state, and a society that has grown tolerant of extrajudicial policies, numb to killings and violations) Even basic facts, truth, and science are being undermined as a result of populist politics, political polarization, and the advent of technologies that inadvertently help propagate misinformation Many of the old ways of doing things are no longer effective and many of us are blindly feeling our way out of this situation We need information and knowledge to help us understand the situation and guide us on how we can move forward – this is where the academe comes in But we need to reach the ground, allies that will act on the knowledge we produce
