R ollins Mansion is one of Des Moines’ treasured jewels with a magnificent view of the downtown skyline. It was built between 1925 and 1927 by Ralph Rollins, owner of Rollins

Hosiery Mills. This elaborate home was designed by famous lo-cal architects Byron Boyd and Herbert Moore, who also designed Salisbury House. Rollins Mansion is on the National Register of Historic Places and is conveniently located between Des Moines International Airport and downtown Des Moines. The Rollins family spared no expense when they designed the home from 16th century ship beams and ceiling beams from the inn where William Shakespeare performed, to stained glass de-signed by Frank Lloyd Wright. Each room throughout the facility showcases different personalities, perfect for any and all events. An ornate hand-applied plaster ceiling and intricate carvings in the stone fireplace highlights the beauty of such an exceptional space. Recently renovated, Rollins Mansion is pleased to offer a charm-ing, intimate, unique event venue in a lovingly restored and main-tained historic residence. The mansion and gardens are now avail-able for holiday dinners, corporate events, private parties and weddings with more than 10,000 square feet of event space. Rol-lins Mansion houses multi-tier gardens featuring an elegant foun-tain and serene reflecting pool. With both indoor and outdoor op-tions for social hour, receptions and ceremonies, Rollins Mansion is the perfect place your special event. Let our historic architecture, exquisite period details and lush

grounds complement your vision for your event. We are here to help plan your perfect day and create lasting memories. We are excited to present Rollins Mansion as your home for celebrations. Please call us today to arrange a private tour.

L et the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden be your desti-nation for an upcoming event. As a progressive new cultural institution, the Botanical Garden is a seasonally inviting back-

drop for celebrations and receptions and a destination business meeting venue. Over the summer, our 34-year old building got a facelift, trans-forming the visitor experience as we worked to implement Phase 1 of our capital campaign. Whether here for a business meeting or a for-mal celebration, guests can wander the gardens during breaks, enjoying the serenity of a lush tropical landscape. T he holiday season is here. In just a few days, you’ll be rushing from shop to shop finding the perfect gifts for everyone from Aunt Jen-ny and Uncle Bill to your cousins in Connecticut. So how do you

know what you’re buying is of the utmost quality and priced fairly for you and those around you? Start by shopping locally.

Local shops, those that support your local economies and add to the local tax base, are the backbone to economic growth and sustain-ability. So why pay an online “order-taker” or big box store when your local shops are poised and prepared to fulfill your needs — fast-er, friendlier, economically and with a much higher quality than any clearing house?

Take, for instance, the gift of flowers. There’s little that com-pares to the beauty of a fresh, professionally designed arrangement of flowers to make your holiday moments mean more. Flowers say, “Thank you,” “I love you,” “Merry Christmas,” “We miss you” and much more. With the right arrangement and personal touch, you can make the holidays, or any day for that matter, brighter for everyone. Why put that in the hands of some out-of-state or even out-of-coun-try merchandise processor?

Shopping locally supports your local economy. A growing percent-age of shopping these days is done online. So, how is it that local shops and retailers can generate much-needed local income through online availability? Brand positioning and marketing properly for on-line ranking is important to be on the search engines’ listings, and many local shops are getting better at it, but it’s important for you, the consumer, to understand where your dollars are going.

FTD.com, or any other floral.com where you don’t know the own-er, are considered “order-takers” — charging up to a $19 fee and then taking a full 27 percent commission before sending the order to a local florist to be made and delivered to that special someone. This is the same florist who will arrange and deliver your order whether you had ordered it online or not. These “order-takers” list products and services that are readily available in every local market, while taking market share and hard-earned cash from your community to line their own pockets. It costs you more and pushes smaller, inde-pendently-owned shops out of competition. On the other hand, the money spent at local businesses circulates within your community more than eight times. While dollars given to “order-takers” may pay some local taxes, the corporate office will certainly have its piece of the pie to feed from, and you can bet it’s not eating in Des Moines.

For every dollar you spend locally, there is a family down the street or across town that will do the same for their loved ones. Whether it’s same-day, worldwide delivery, professionally designed orders, local pride or simply the ease of working with those you know and trust, buying locally makes sense. No one is asking you to pay more to buy locally. We simply ask you to at least shop locally and compare. You’ll be glad you did.

I’m Tom Boesen, third generation Des Moines florist, and I look forward to seeing you in our central Iowa shops this season.
