MR. GUS PARVIZIANGus Parvizian immigrated to the United States from Iran in 1968 at the age of 19. He immediately set out to achieve the American Dream entering college while simultaneously partnering with his broth-er in a retail rug store in the prestigious Georgetown neighborhood of Washington, D.C. He received both a Bachelor’s in Math from Morgan State University and a Mas-ter’s in Medical Engineering from George Washington University while continuing to grow the family rug business. Expand-ing the business brought Mr. Parvizian to Houston in 1979. Houston has become his home. Multiple generations of the Parviz-ian family were born and live here. Mr. Par-vizian has strong ties to the Houston com-munity beyond living here. He has been a long time supporter of Houston firefighters as well as the local chapters of the Ameri-can Cancer Society, the American Heart As-sociation, the Arthritis Foundation and the American Diabetes Association. Mr. Parviz-ian would love nothing more than to meet you in person in his beautiful new location to use his over 40 years of experience in the rug industry to help you with all your home décor rug needs. Come meet the in-credibly friendly, warm and generous man we know simply as Gus.

History of Oriental Rugs: The origin of hand-woven Oriental rugs is uncertain, but a vari-ety of weavings are alluded to in various ancient writings. The Parzyrk, now part of the Hermitage Museum Collection in Len-ingrad, is the oldest surviving piece of carpet. The Pazyryk was discovered and excavated in a southern Siberian burial site in 1947-1949 and dates back to about 400-500 B.C.

Throughout the 1980’s, the production of Persian-designed car-pets in other countries, particularly India, China, Pakistan, Turkey, and Romania has increased significantly. This increase is due to the evolution of the rug industry. While the tradition and tech-nique of weaving have remained constant, handmade oriental carpets have undergone dramatic changes. The weavers have found it more profitable to adapt to new designs and colors to accommodate the Western decorative tastes. Available in a full range of prices, the consumer is able to choose from an even wider range of color and design choice.

Whether you are buying an Oriental or Persian rug as an invest-ment or for enjoyment, it is important to be familiar with the different designs and materials used in construction and weav-ing. Parvizian is one of the most reputable rug dealers in the United States. We are pleased to help educate and inform you on your purchase.

How would one describe an Oriental rug?

The Oriental Rug Importers Association, Inc. defines an Oriental rug as “…handmade of natural fibers (most commonly wool or silk), with a pile of woven on a warp and weft, with individual character and design made in the Near East, Middle East, Far East or the Balkans.”

The oriental hand-woven rug varies in quality. Quality is usu-ally determined by the intricacy of design, the knot density and the wool. The length of its fibers and its springiness defines the quality of wool, and its luster. Wool used in hand knotted oriental rugs is either a blend of indigenous and imported wool or originated exclusively from the country of origin. The amount of detail a design possesses as well as the number of colors needed to execute the pattern refers to the intricacy of design. The more intricate the design, the more experienced the weaver must be to create the pattern. Finally, knot density and fineness of weave are synonymous. The more knots tied per inch, the more labor-intensive the production and the finer the detail in the design.

Company HistoryParvizian Rugs was founded

in USA almost 50 years ago with a mission to give its customers the highest quality with the larg-est selection available and best value in Oriental rugs. Over the years, Parvizian has become the name associated with Americas’ finest Oriental rugs.

The Parvizian Company was founded in 1965 in the George-town neighborhood of our na-tion’s capital, Washington DC. After having opened several new locations in the District, the Parvizian brothers decided to set-tle in Bethesda, adding an array of beautiful furniture products to their rug collection. Currently

Parvizian Rugs have locations in Houston, Texas and Annapolis, Maryland.

Their European endeavours also flourished in Zurich Switzer-land dealing in wholesale mer-chandise and prior to that, Roma-nia where they had established a rug workshop of 5000 weavers. Their massive wool factory in Pa-kistan and India had also been in operation for over 30 years.

With rugs selling for as little as $ 500 and as much as $150,000, Mr. Parvizian has worked with his share of high-profile clients. He counts scores of business execu-tives, politicians and other inves-

tors as his customers. Parvizian has become the most prestigious and the most well-known rug gallery around the country with some of the most noted American and European clientele including the White House.

After 40 years of serving Hou-ston, Parvizian Rugs has moved to better service its customer and to accommodate our growing number of rugs. Parvizian Rugs & Home would like to share its leg-acy with you! Join us to celebrate the new era of Parvizian Rugs.

RIGHT selectionHow to Buy an Oriental rug: Buy from an established retailer of oriental rugs with a trusted reputation. Buy from an establishment whose integrity can be verified through recognized trade associa-tions, or check with your local Better Business Bureau.

Avoid traveling auctions, often held at hotels and airports. They may be here today and gone tomorrow. You should protect yourself by being able to deal with someone on an ongoing basis. Beware of “Going-Out-Of-Business” sales which may be promo-tional schemes, where values are exaggerated and the quality of the merchandise is mediocre or below average. Also, once out of business, there is no one to return it to.

Once you have found a rug that appeals to you, feel free to question the rug retailer about its quality and suitability for the area you have in mind to use the rug.

Parvizian Rugs & Home will allow you to try a rug at home for a few days without any obligation of keeping it. They will refund the full purchase price if the rug does not pass its 2-day try out, and after that 100% trade in is guaranteed.

Oriental Rugs: Handcrafted works of art; good resale value; trade-in ability; moves with you when you move; made to last a lifetime; greatly enhances room and furni-ture; organizes space; non-physical room divider; can become a collec-tor’s item; an heirloom to pass down generations.Construction & Design: The wool used to create Oriental rugs comes from sheep. The age of the sheep and the time of year shearing oc-cur are important factors. Since the shoulder wool is the longest and most expensive, it gives the rug’s wool excellent strength, luster, resil-ience, softness and durability found in all Parvizian Rugs. Once the wool is sheared, washed and spun, the strands are dyed. Chrome dyes used today are color-fast and come in over 600 colors.

Weaving: Then the weaving be-gins! The hand weaving of a rug is a long task, the weaver tying at least some 10,000 knots! The two primary types of knots used today are Turkish and Persian knots. The Persian knot is said to be advanta-geous over the Turkish knot as its less bulky and makes better curves, enabling a finer design. The qual-ity, texture and durability of a rug is determined by the number of knots per square inch. The more knots, the finer the details of design and richness in shades and colors. Rug designs are normally named for the town or region where they originat-ed, such as the Tabriz, which comes from the northwest city of Iran. They can also be named for their use, as in the Prayer Rug used for praying. Other rugs are named for their style of weaving, such as the Kilim or Dhurrie.

The term antique or “vintage” applies to rugs that were produced throughout the 20th century. Artisan weavers, entrepreneurs and commercial weaving centers experi-mented with innovative techniques, styles and colors. Rugs were one of many items that were part of this deco-rative revolution, a trend that began in the 19th century when handcrafted styles were excessively ornate. These wonderful pieces demonstrate the consummate skill of the weavers who produced beautiful works of art in primitive living conditions and hostile landscapes. The weavings show the rich colour palette of natural dyes, which have mellowed for over 100 years. The spontane-ity of design and freedom of expression of the weaver makes each one of these rugs and carpets a woven work of art.

These rugs include abstract, pop-art, artist-designed, sur-realist, and minimalist styles that set or kept pace with quickly changing trends. In many ways, the new and in-novative trends were based upon a revival of folklore and traditions that were turned on their ear to become a new genre. These carpets’ abstractions, whimsy, playful style and geometric formality are enduring and right at home in mid-century modern interiors. They are textural, colorful, creative and have all the traits that modernists love to love. These unmistakable pieces are displayed at museums all over the world and sometimes sold for millions of dollars. Explore our complete collection of antique carpets today.

Within the world of art and antiques, the term ‘mas-terpiece’ has become synonymous with works of the first rank or tier; those made by the greatest and most renowned artists of their day; works which set a new standard of excellence, quality, and creative innova-tion. In the world of rug designs, masterpieces in Per-sian rugs are those pieces whose designs are the most refined, exquisite, and faithful to classical standards, those whose weave are most expert, and those whose materials and color are most exceptional.

Often such carpets have been woven within the atelier or workshop of an acknowledged master whose signa-ture or ‘cartouche’ appears on the carpet itself. While every single one of our rugs is special or exceptional in some way, Parvizian Rugs carries the largest collec-tion of acknowledged masterpieces of this kind, which ultimately exist on a level all their own as historic crea-tions. We invite you to experience that special status or rank that only time and discriminating taste can confer. Once you have seen a true masterpiece, you will under-stand why many people from all over the world collect these beautiful works of art!

By definition, traditional designs are modern-day rep-resentations of time-honored European and Asian pat-terns. In some cases, a traditional rug’s design may even be the exact same pattern used for generations and generations! Traditional rugs tend to be thought of as formal; however, they can certainly be at home in casual living spaces, like dens or game rooms. And, more often than not, their designs contain specific ele-ments: floral and other intricate patterns, borders, and central medallions in shapes like diamonds, octagons, and hexagons. The rugs on the following pages are great examples.

With daring designs, unusual patterns, and modern el-ements, contemporary rugs offer a no-holds-barred ap-proach to decorating. The selection of contemporary rugs at Parvizian Rugs reflects this eclectic design style. Our inventory contains rugs with eye-catching geometric shapes and unique color combinations. We also embrace some of the more popular contemporary designs such as shaggy and patchwork. When looking to add a modern flair to a room, nothing will do better than a contem-porary area rug. When choosing a rug, you needn’t feel stuck with a boring pattern or color. The rise of modern and contemporary rugs has resulted in a huge selection of area rugs in bold, trendy patterns and colors.

Nothing spices up a room like a splash of bright color or a fun print. Contemporary rugs are ideal because they can be their own statement piece without detract-ing from the rest of the room. While decorating with a contemporary rug may be daring, it doesn’t have to be distracting. These rugs blend seamlessly in with modern decor but they can also add a pop of color or design that may otherwise be missing in more traditional spaces. If the look of your room is muted, a bold print may be just what you need to add a little pizazz, while a modern look can be complemented with one of our many prints or designs. With hundreds of modern rugs in stock, you are sure to find the color and design you desire at Parvizian Rugs & Home.
