We use the Past Perfect:

• An action happened in the past before another past action:

Sue had packed her rucksack before she called a taxi.

• An action happened before a stated time in the past: Sue had watered all the flowers by 6 o’clock in the

evening.

We use the Past Simple:

• Actions happened immediately one after the other in the past.Yesterday he got up at 7 a.m., had a shower, got dressed, had breakfast, left his flat and went to work.

Compare:
