1. Please recall that we begin our Soup Suppers and series of talks (and Stations of the Cross) this coming Tuesday evening at 6:00 p.m. Our talks this year are offered by the Diocese’s Office of Social Concerns and cover a wide area of topics that take us beyond the borders of our own parish. They should be very informative for all of us. So, join us to pray (stations), fast (soup meal) and almsgiving (offering for the meal to go to Rice Bowl.) They should be very informative for all of us. Again, bring the kids.
2. Of course, not far behind will be Friday evening’s Fish Fries. Volunteers are still needed, especially clean up. I hope to see many of you at the above.

NOTES FROM THE LOFT• On the First Sunday of Lent, the Litany of the Saints is
traditionally chanted at the start of whichever Mass the RCIA catechumens and candidates attend – the 10:45 a.m. Mass here at St. Edward. May we join the saints in praying for them throughout Lent.
• During Lent, the music at Mass becomes sparser. We have for many years sung “Jesus, Remember Me” at the end of Mass and chanted some Mass parts, both in English and in Latin. If you want to learn/review the chant Mass parts, there are videos, translations, and pronunciation guides on the parish website. Go to http://www.saintedwards.org/music and click on the link for “Chant Mass parts.” ~ Paul, 740-587-3254

BLAZEAll 7th-8th grade girls are invited to be a part of Blaze! You’ve heard of Walking With Purpose, now it’s time for you and your daughter to discover Blaze. Girls will join a group of peers with a group leader and meet weekly based on their schedules to uncover the true meaning of living as a daughter of God. Invite your friends because Blaze is a program of sisterhood! All middle school moms and daughters are invited to a “Connect Coffee” every 5 weeks. So if you aren’t sure that you can commit to a weekly small group meeting then come every 5 weeks to gather for large group outreach and community! The fi rst Blaze Connect Coffee is March 13th at 6:30 p.m. in the Hall.
CHURCH REGULATIONS REGARDING ABSTINENCE• Abstinence from meat (beast or fowl) is to be observed
by all Catholics fourteen years old and older on all the Fridays of Lent.
• This obligation prohibits the eating of meat, but eggs, milk products, or condiments of any kind, even though made from animal fat are permitted.
40 DAYS, 40 CANS: A CAN-A-DAY FOR LENTAs we prepare for Easter and the Resurrection of the Lord, consider making a sacrifi ce for the hungry of our community. The St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry is sponsoring a “40 Days, 40 Cans” campaign. Each family is asked to donate 40 cans to the pantry as their “works of love” during Lent. The pantry is in need of canned fruit, soup, tuna skillet dinners and personal items (toilet paper and laundry detergent). Families may also make a monetary donation to the pantry by placing a check in the offering listing the food pantry in the memo section of the check. Thanks for thinking of the pantry during this most Holy Season.
RCIAThe next RCIA session is this Tuesday, March 12th at 7:30 p.m. in the Parish Hall after the Stations of the Cross Devotion in the Church. We will refl ect on the Diocesan Rite of Election and examine the topic of Catholic Social Justice. Anyone in the parish may attend.

Today’s readings: Deuteronomy 26:4–10; Psalm 91:1–2, 10–11, 12, 13, 14, 15; Romans 10:8–13; Luke 4:1–13. As a people and as individuals, we turn to God in times of want and in times of plenty, as we live out our covenant relation-ship. Moses instructs the people to bring their baskets filled with products of the soil to offer at the altar of the Lord, and then to declare before God all he has done for them, from their days of wandering in Egypt to being led to a land flow-ing with milk and honey. These are the events that have shaped them as a people. As they confessed their faith, they acknowledged all that God had given to them. Following this proclamation, they bow down in the presence of the Lord.
Jesus is led into the desert to take the journey of his people. A journey of testing and purification. Testing whether Jesus will use his divine power, the devil says, “If you are the Son of God . . .” Jesus responds with words from Scripture, words that give him power and strength. After the temptations are faced, the angels come to wait upon Jesus. Entering into these forty days, be open to discovering the blessings of God’s Word, allowing its wisdom to provide you with strength and protection. What passages from the Bible provide peace to you? Which ones give you consolation in times of sadness or joy in the awe and wonder of God?
Sunday, March 10, 2019Journey with the Word
Lenten JourneyLord God,you invite us to enter into these desert
days of Lent.Your Son was filled with the Holy Spiritand then led into the wilderness, where he experienced the emptiness
of hunger, and faced temptations from the devil. When we stumble and find this
journey difficult, because we are overwhelmed by our
needs and desires,or seek to find a quick escape
from troubles, help us to turn to you in our time
of want.We ask that you draw us closer to you,so that we may find nourishment in
your Word, during these forty days of Lent.We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen.

This Week at HomeMonday, March 11 The Least among UsWho would you consider to be the least among us? Those with no voice or power? The poor, the weak and marginal-ized? The aged or the young and innocent? The Gospel invites us to see the face of Christ in the people who have little status. Who in your family or neighborhood is in need of a smile, a hug, a conversation, or a warm meal? Who would enjoy hearing from you? Make time for them this week. Today’s Readings: Leviticus 19:1–2, 11–18; Psalm 19:8, 9, 10, 15; Matthew 25:31–46.
Tuesday, March 12 Your Will Be DoneWhen the disciples asked Jesus to teach them to pray, he taught them the prayer that we know as the Our Father or Lord’s Prayer. Sometimes we say this prayer giving little thought to its words. We pray, “your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” In heaven, God’s will is obeyed perfectly. What would our world be like if his will were obeyed on earth? Today’s Readings: Isaiah 55:10–11;Psalm 34:4–5, 6–7, 16–17, 18–19; Matthew 6:7–15.
Wednesday, March 13RepentWhen Jonah, brought the message to repent to the people of Nineveh, they listened and turned away from sin. Jesus has revealed God and his Kingdom to us. What is your response? Have you allowed his Word to transform you? The Catechism of the Catholic Church states that an examination of con-science is a “prayerful self-reflection on our words and deeds in the light of the Gospel to determine how we may have sinned against God.” As a preparation for the Sacrament of Reconciliation, make an examination of conscience, consid-ering where you have not listened to the voice of God. Today’s Readings: Jonah 3:1–10; Psalm 51:3–4, 12–13, 18–19; Luke 11:29–32.
Thursday, March 14 Seek and FindHow do you pray and speak with God? Jesus offers these instructions: to ask, to seek, and to find. Is it difficult for you to ask for something from God? Is there something that you are struggling with in your life? Write in your Lenten journal what you are most in need of at this moment. Think about where you turn to seek answers when you face problems or difficult situations. Is God a part of the solution? Ask the Lord to give you peace and to find his will for you this day. Today’s Readings: Esther C:12, 14–16, 23–25; Psalm 138:1–2,2–3, 7–8; Matthew 7:7–12.
Friday, March 15Difficult and MessyWe do not need to look too far to know that relationships are difficult and life can be messy. Within every family, group, or community, there are instances of tension. How do we bring acceptance and understanding to those situations? We are called to make peace and to reconcile with one another. Let us ask God to help us bring his mercy and compassion, his peace and his love to every conversation and every corner of our world this week. Today’s Readings: Ezekiel 18:21–28; Psalm 130:1–2, 3–4, 4–6, 7–8; Matthew 5:20–25.
Saturday, March 16 Difficult LoveLove your enemies. It is easy for us to love those who love us, but loving those who have harmed us is difficult. Loving our enemies is countercultural, so we look different than the rest of the world when we love this way. Who will help us love like this? God will give us everything we need to follow him. Spend time in prayer today asking God to forgive those who have caused hurt, pain, and injury in your life. Today’s Readings: Deuteronomy 26:16–19; Psalm 119:1–2, 4–5, 7–8; Matthew 5:43–48.
“The beginning of all temptation lies in a wavering mind and little trust in God, for as a
rudderless ship is driven hither and yon by waves, so a careless and irresolute man is tempted in many ways. Fire tempers iron and temptation steels the just. Often we do not know what we can stand, but temptation shows us what we are. Above all, we
must be especially alert against the beginnings of temptation, for the enemy is more easily conquered if he is refused admittance to the mind and is met beyond the
threshold when he knocks.” ~SAINT FRANCIS DE SALES, PATRON SAINT OF THE DIOCESE OF COLUMBUS
Monday, March 11 ~ First Week in the Season of Lent
Holy Gospel: Matthew 25:31-46 Jesus said to his disciples: “When the Son of Man comes in his glory,
and all the angels with him, he will sit upon his glorious throne, and all the nations will be assembled
before him. And he will separate them one from another, as a shepherd separates the sheep from the
goats. He will place the sheep on his right and the goats on his left. Then the king will say to those on his
right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father. Inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the
foundation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a
stranger and you welcomed me, naked and you clothed me, ill and you cared for me, in prison and you
visited me.’ Then the righteous will answer him and say, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you,
or thirsty and give you drink? When did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe
you? When did we see you ill or in prison, and visit you?’ And the king will say to them in reply, ‘Amen, I
say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.’ Then he will say to
those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you accursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the Devil and his
angels. For I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink, a stranger
and you gave me no welcome, naked and you gave me no clothing, ill and in prison, and you did not care
for me.’ Then they will answer and say, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or
naked or ill or in prison, and not minister to your needs?’ He will answer them, ‘Amen, I say to you, what
you did not do for one of these least ones, you did not do for me.’ And these will go off to eternal
punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.”
Meditation: Jesus’ parable about goats and sheep must have amused and surprised his audience. Goats
and sheep shared the same grazing ground during the day, but had to be separated at night. Goats were
less docile and more restless than sheep. They came to symbolize evil and the expression “scapegoat” has
become a common expression for someone bearing blame for others (read the Bible, Old Testament, Book
of Leviticus 26:20-22, for a description of the ritual expulsion of a sin-bearing goat on the Day of
Atonement). Separation is an inevitable consequence of sin and judgment. The Day of Judgment will
reveal who showed true care and concern, compassion and mercy toward their neighbor.
Prayer: Grant, almighty God, through the yearly observances of holy Lent, that we may grow in
understanding of the riches hidden in Christ and by worthy conduct pursue their effects. Through our Lord
Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and
ever. Amen.
Contemplation: This parable is similar to the parable about Lazarus and the rich man. The rich man, who
let Lazarus die on his doorstep, was doomed to crave for drops of cold water he had not thought of giving
to the poor man. When Saint Martin of Tours, a young Roman soldier and seeker of the Christian faith,
met an unclothed man begging for alms in the freezing cold, he stopped and cut his coat in two and gave
half to the stranger. That night he dreamt he saw the heavenly court with Jesus robed in a torn cloak.
One of the angels present asked, "Master, why do you wear that battered cloak?" Jesus replied, "My
servant Martin gave it to me." Saint Martin’s disciple and biographer, Sulpicius Severus, states that as a
consequence of this vision Martin “flew to be baptized.” God is gracious and merciful; his love compels us
to treat others with mercy and kindness. When we do something for one of Christ's little ones, we do it for
Christ himself. Do you treat your neighbor with mercy and love as Christ has treated you? If not, why
not? This might be an opportunity to improve ourselves in this regard during this Lenten season.
Tuesday, March 12 ~ First Week in the Season of Lent
Holy Gospel: Matthew 6:7-15 Jesus said to his disciples: “In praying, do not babble like the pagans,
who think that they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them. Your Father knows
what you need before you ask him. “This is how you are to pray: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed
be thy name, thy Kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily
bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into
temptation, but deliver us from evil. “If you forgive men their transgressions, your heavenly Father will
forgive you. But if you do not forgive men, neither will your Father forgive your transgressions.”
Meditation: We can approach God confidently because he is waiting with arms wide open to receive his
prodigal sons and daughters. That is why Jesus gave his disciples the perfect prayer that dares to call
God, Our Father. This prayer teaches us how to ask God for the things we really need, the things that
matter not only for the present but for eternity as well. We can approach God our Father with confidence
and boldness because Christ has opened the way to heaven for us through his death and resurrection.
When we ask God for help, he fortunately does not give us what we deserve. Instead, he responds with
grace and mercy. He is kind and forgiving towards us and he expects us to treat our neighbor the same.
Prayer: Look upon your family, Lord, that, through the chastening effects of bodily discipline, our minds
may be radiant in your presence with the strength of our yearning for you. Through our Lord Jesus Christ,
your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
Contemplation: Consider what Saint John Cassian wrote about the Lord’s Prayer and the necessity for us
to truly forgive others from the heart: “The mercy of God is beyond description. While he is offering us a
model prayer he is teaching us a way of life whereby we can be pleasing in his sight. But that is not all. In
this same prayer he gives us an easy method for attracting an indulgent and merciful judgment on our
lives. He gives us the possibility of ourselves mitigating the sentence hanging over us and of compelling
him to pardon us. What else could he do in the face of our generosity when we ask him to forgive us as
we have forgiven our neighbor? If we are faithful in this prayer, each of us will ask forgiveness for our own
failings after we have forgiven the sins of those who have sinned against us, not only those who have
sinned against our Master. There is, in fact, in some of us a very bad habit. We treat our sins against
God, however appalling, with gentle indulgence: but when by contrast it is a matter of sins against us
ourselves, albeit very tiny ones, we exact reparation with ruthless severity. Anyone who has not forgiven
from the bottom of the heart the brother or sister who has done him wrong will only obtain from this
prayer his own condemnation, rather than any mercy.” Thus we need to honestly ask ourselves: do I
treat others as the Lord has instructed me -- with mercy, steadfast love, and kindness? If not, why not?
Something, no doubt, for each of us to work on during this Season of Lent.
Wednesday, March 13 ~ First Week in the Season of Lent
Holy Gospel: Luke 11:29-32 While still more people gathered in the crowd, Jesus said to them, “This
generation is an evil generation; it seeks a sign, but no sign will be given it, except the sign of Jonah. Just
as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites, so will the Son of Man be to this generation. At the judgment the
queen of the south will rise with the men of this generation and she will condemn them, because she
came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and there is something greater than
Solomon here. At the judgment the men of Nineveh will arise with this generation and condemn it,
because at the preaching of Jonah they repented, and there is something greater than Jonah here.”
Meditation: The Lord Jesus came to set us free from slavery to sin and hurtful desires. Through the gift
of the Holy Spirit he pours his love into our hearts that we may understand his will for our lives and walk
in his way of holiness. God searches our hearts, not to condemn us, but to show us where we need his
saving grace and help. He calls us to seek him with true repentance, humility, and the honesty to see our
sins for what they really are – a rejection of his love and will for our lives. God will transform us if we
listen to his word and allow his Holy Spirit to work in our lives. Ask the Lord to renew your mind and to
increase your thirst for his wisdom. James says that the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable,
gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, without uncertainty or insincerity (ref. James 3:17).
A double-minded person cannot receive this kind of wisdom. The single of mind desire one thing alone –
God's pleasure. God wants us to delight in him and to know the freedom of his truth and love. Do you
thirst for the holiness without which no one will see the Lord (ref. Hebrews 12:14)?
Prayer: Bestow on us, we pray, O Lord, a spirit of always pondering on what is right and of hastening to
carry it out, and, since without you we cannot exist, may we be enabled to live according to your will.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one
God, for ever and ever. Amen.
Contemplation: Do you pay careful attention to warning signs? Do you pay attention to these signs at
all? Many fatalities could be avoided if people paid attention to such signs. When the religious leaders
demanded a sign from Jesus, he gave them a serious warning to avert spiritual disaster. It was
characteristic of the Jews that they demanded “signs” from God's messengers to authenticate their claims.
When the religious leaders pressed Jesus to give proof for his claims he says in so many words that he is
God's sign and that they need no further evidence from heaven than his own person. The Ninevites
recognized God's warning when Jonah spoke to them, and they repented. And the Queen of Sheba
recognized God's wisdom in Solomon. Jonah was God's sign and his message was the message of a
merciful God for the people of Nineveh. Unfortunately the religious leaders were not content to accept the
signs right before their eyes. They had rejected the message of John the Baptist and now they reject
Jesus as God's Anointed One (Messiah) and they fail to heed his message. Simeon had prophesied at
Jesus’ birth that he was “destined for the falling and rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be
opposed so that inner thoughts of many will be revealed” (Luke 2:34- 35). Jesus confirmed his message
with many miracles in preparation for the greatest sign of all – his resurrection on the third day.
Thursday, March 14 ~ First Week in the Season of Lent
Holy Gospel: Matthew 7:7-12 Jesus said to his disciples: “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you
will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks, receives; and the one who
seeks, finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened. Which one of you would hand his son a
stone when he asked for a loaf of bread, or a snake when he asked for a fish? If you then, who are
wicked, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give good
things to those who ask him. “Do to others whatever you would have them do to you. This is the law and
the prophets.”
Meditation: Those who know and trust in God's love, pray with great boldness. Saint John Chrysostom, a
Father of the Church, had this to say about the power of prayer: “Prayer is an all-efficient panoply [i.e. 'a
full suit of armor' or 'splendid array'], a treasure undiminished, a mine never exhausted, a sky
unobstructed by clouds, a haven unruffled by storm. It is the root, the fountain, and the mother of a
thousand blessings. It exceeds a monarch’s power. ..I speak not of the prayer which is cold and feeble
and devoid of zeal. I speak of that which proceeds from a mind outstretched, the child of a contrite spirit,
the offspring of a soul converted – this is the prayer which mounts to heaven. ..The power of prayer has
subdued the strength of fire, bridled the rage of lions, silenced anarchy, extinguished wars, appeased the
elements, expelled demons, burst the chains of death, enlarged the gates of heaven, relieved diseases,
averted frauds, rescued cities from destruction, stayed the sun in its course, and arrested the progress of
the thunderbolt. In sum prayer has power to destroy whatever is at enmity with the good.”
Amen.
Contemplation: Jesus wanted to raise the expectations of his disciples when he taught them how to
pray. Jesus’ parable of the father feeding his son illustrates the unthinkable! How could a loving father
refuse to give his son what is good; or worse, to give him what is harmful? In conclusion Jesus makes a
startling claim: How much more will the heavenly Father give to those who ask! Our heavenly Father
graciously gives beyond our expectations. Jesus taught his disciples to pray with confidence because the
Heavenly Father in his goodness always answers prayers. That is why we can boldly pray: Give us this day
our daily bread. Prayer flows from the love of God; and the personal love we show to our neighbor is
fueled by the love that God has poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit (ref. Romans 5:5). Jesus
concludes his discourse on prayer with the reminder that we must treat our neighbor in the same way we
wish to be treated by God and by others. We must not just avoid doing harm to our neighbor, we must
actively seek his or her welfare. In doing so, we fulfill the law and the prophets, namely what God requires
of us — loving God with above all things and loving our neighbor as ourselves. The Holy Spirit is every
ready to transform our lives in Jesus’ way of love. Do you thirst for holiness and for the fire of God’s love?
Friday, March 15 ~ First Week in the Season of Lent
Holy Gospel: Matthew 5:20-26 Jesus said to his disciples: “I tell you, unless your righteousness
surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter into the Kingdom of heaven. “You have
heard that it was said to your ancestors, You shall not kill; and whoever kills will be liable to judgment.
But I say to you, whoever is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment, and whoever says to his
brother, Raqa, will be answerable to the Sanhedrin, and whoever says, ‘You fool,’ will be liable to fiery
Gehenna. Therefore, if you bring your gift to the altar, and there recall that your brother has anything
against you, leave your gift there at the altar, go first and be reconciled with your brother, and then come
and offer your gift. Settle with your opponent quickly while on the way to court. Otherwise your opponent
will hand you over to the judge, and the judge will hand you over to the guard, and you will be thrown
into prison. Amen, I say to you, you will not be released until you have paid the last penny.”
Meditation: Do you allow sin or anger to master all or part of your life? The first human to hate his
brother was Cain. God warned Cain: “Why are you angry?...Sin in couching at the door; it's desire is for
you, but you must master it” (Genesis 4:6-7). Folks, sin doesn't just happen; it first grows as a seed in
one's heart. Unless it is mastered, by God's grace, it grows like a weed and chokes the fruitful vine of
love, charity and peace. Jesus addressed the issue of keeping the commandments with his disciples. The
scribes and Pharisees equated righteousness with satisfying the demands of the law. Jesus showed them
how short they had come. Jesus points to the heart as the seat of desire and choice. Unless forbidden and
evil desires are eradicated, the heart will be corrupted. Jesus points to forbidden anger with one's brother.
This is a selfish anger that broods and is long-lived, that nurses a grudge and keeps wrath warm, and that
refuses to die. Anger in the heart as well as anger in speech or action are equally forbidden. What is the
antidote to anger and rage? Mercy, kindness, and forbearance spring from a heart full of love and
forgiveness. God has forgiven us and he calls us to extend mercy and forgiveness towards those who
cause us harm and grief. In the cross of Jesus we see the supreme example of love and the power for
overcoming evil. Only God's love and grace can set our hearts and minds free from the tyranny of
wounded pride and spiteful revenge. Do you harbor any anger towards another person? And are you quick
to be reconciled when a rupture has been caused in your relationships? Ask God to set you free and to fill
your heart and mind with his love and his timeless truths.
Prayer: Grant that your faithful, O Lord, we pray, may be so conformed to the paschal observances, and
the bodily discipline now solemnly begun may bear fruit in the souls of all. Through our Lord Jesus Christ,
your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
Contemplation: Saint Eusebius, a Church Father, offered the following prayer as instruction for his fellow
Christians: “May I be no man's enemy, and may I be the friend of that which is eternal and abides. May I
never quarrel with those nearest me: and if I do, may I be reconciled quickly. May I love, seek, and attain
only that which is good. May I wish for all men's happiness and envy none. May I never rejoice in the ill-
fortune of one who has wronged me. When I have done or said what is wrong, may I never wait for the
rebuke of others, but always rebuke myself until I make amends. May I win no victory that harms either
me or my opponent. May I reconcile friends who are angry with one another. May I never fail a friend who
is in danger. When visiting those in grief may I be able by gentle and healing words to soften their pain.
May I respect myself. May I always keep tame that which rages within me. May I accustom myself to be
gentle, and never be angry with people because of circumstances. May I never discuss who is wicked and
what wicked things he has done, but know good men and follow in their footsteps.” Do you seek to live
peaceably and charitably with all? If not, pray that you will – begin this Lent! Let’s get on board, people!

FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT MARCH 10, 2019
ALL MEN INVITED: GENESIS TO JESUS SERIES
A Bible Study About the Bible – “Understanding the Bible requires understanding of its “plot.” And the Bible’s plot is the story of salvation history. It is the story of human salvation unfolding in history according to God’s plan. You and I need to read the Bible if we are to make sense of the Scriptures and apply them to our lives as Catholics.
The Wednesday night Men’s Faith Sharing group invites all men, young, old, parishioner, non-parishioner, to join them for the video series, “Genesis to Jesus,” beginning Wednesday, March 13th at 7:00 p.m. with praying the Rosary at the tabernacle, followed by a video presentation in the lounge at 7:30 then discussion until 8:30.
March 13: “Reading Scripture with the Church”; themes covered: 1. Why and how should Catholics study the Bible? 2. The Mass as key to understanding Scripture 3. Scripture as the inspired Word of God and 4. Salvation history as a two-part story.
Please prayerfully consider joining us for this journey through the Bible through June 5th where we’ll study the divine covenants that God made with humanity in the course of salvation history. We’ll focus on His Old Testament covenants with Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses, and David, then we’ll see how each is fulfilled in the New Testament covenant God makes with the world through Jesus Christ. Any questions, contact Deacon John at 740-973-5583. These videos are a production by the St. Paul Center for Biblical Theology.

FOOD PANTRY NEWS During the month of February, the St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry served 261 families, representing 698 individuals. During the month, there seemed to be an increase in the number of homeless people visiting the pantry. It is always difficult to hear how these people are trying to survive. I witnessed two amazing acts of kindness shown by the families that we serve. On two occasions, a family took home a homeless couple and offered their home as a refuge until the homeless couple could find shelter. A true act of kindness! I am very grateful for the love and support shown not only by our volunteers but also by the people we serve. The effects of the work we do at the pantry have a far greater reach than what we can imagine. Thanks to each of you for your continued support and donations to the pantry.
Once again, we have our largest campaign for donations. The “40 Days, 40 Cans: A Can-A-Day for Lent” beginning this month. Last year, we had a tremendous response, and we are hoping for more of the same this season. It is important that we start to build our stock for the busy summer months ahead. Please consider participating in this campaign.
SAINT VINCENT DE PAUL DISPATCHER REQUEST
Our SVdP Conference is looking for volunteers to take calls from the help line. This is the perfect opportunity for those that would like to help from home. The volunteer calls into the help line to listen to the recordings of the requests for assistance. They are provided with a list of streets that indicates which of the Licking County Conferences services that address. The volunteer then calls the appropriate Conference and leaves a recording with the caller’s information.
The shifts are divided into two four hour shifts a day. The volunteer can call in at their convenience during the shift. The commitment can be monthly, weekly or even several times a week. Several volunteers do both shifts on the days they volunteer, others share the day with another volunteer. You choose what works best for you. The schedule is made monthly and allows for flexibility for travel. This is perfect for stay at home parents or those that do not want or cannot do home visits.
Please consider this ministry, many hands make light work. For more information or to volunteer, please call Cindy Kendrick at 740-404-3591. A meeting will be scheduled for new volunteers to speak with current dispatchers to better understand the ministry.

CLOSER TO HOME... STEWARDSHIP AT ST. EDWARD
And so it begins – the holy and, for some, daunting, season of Lent. This is the season in our liturgical year when the Church encourages us to increase our prayer, fasting and almsgiving in order to enter more deeply into the mystery of our Lord’s Passion and Death and to celebrate more fully His Resurrection.
Jesus, by His own example in today’s Gospel, demonstrates the necessity of setting aside a period of time devoted especially to prayer and fasting as a means of strengthening our spiritual muscles. Just before the launch of His public ministry, He is “led by the Holy Spirit into the desert for forty days, to be tempted by the devil.” In imitation of Jesus, we should ask the Holy Spirit to lead us into the desert, too — the desert of our interior lives where our thoughts and desires reside.
While our Lord was strong enough to withstand the temptations of the devil on His own, we most certainly are not! We must turn to the Holy Spirit and ask Him to show us where we need to grow, and then rely on the Holy Spirit for strength and guidance throughout these 40 days of growth. Perhaps we will be led to take on a spiritual reading program, or a daily time of meditation on the Scriptures. Maybe we’ll be inspired to fast from our favorite food or social media fi x and fi nd a project that serves the poor in this community.
If these spiritual exercises hurt a little, that means we are doing them right! At the end of this season, we will be prepared to enter into the grace-fi lled days of the Triduum and we will, through the power of the Holy Spirit, be resurrected as a new creation with our Lord come Easter. Let us begin! – catholicsteward.com

SING-A-LONGLooking for singers, musicians and those willing to help entertain at the Middleton Senior Living in Granville from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. and/or Tuscany Gardens rehabilitation and care facility in Pataskala from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Once a month, on the second Monday, we lead the residents in singing old standard songs they know. Please contact Eric Soiu at 740-927-8727 or [email protected].
“I have now brought you the fi rst fruits of the products of the soil which you, O Lord, have given to me.”
(DEUTERONOMY 26:10)This line from the Old Testament offers two challenges. First, do you give to God from your “fi rst fruits,” the best that you have to offer, or do you give from what is leftover? Second, do you recognize that everything you have has been given to you by God? Ask God for a grateful and generous heart, every day, in all circumstances. Learn how you can be generous by supporting your parish and contact The Catholic Foundation. Visit www.catholic-foundation.org/development for more information.
