Theme: Who Is Jesus For You 24
th Sunday in Ordinary Time of the Year B, September 12, 2021
First Reading Is 50:4c-9a, Second James 2:14-18, Gospel Mark 8:27-35 In today’s gospel reading Jesus asks His disciples “who do the people say the Son of Man is?” The disciples told Him what other people say “You are John the Baptist, others say Elijah, others Jeremiah, and still others say one of the prophets.” Thereafter, He asks them a direct question, “but you who have been with Me all this time, who do you think I Am?” Peter speaking on behalf of the other apostles said, “You are the Christ.” The second part of Jesus question was a personal question in the same way this same question is what each one is called to answer personally, “who is Jesus for you?” How do you respond to the question of who Jesus is? There are some reasons Jesus may have decided to put this question to His disciples. “Who do you say the Son of Man is?” First, Jesus was gradually coming to the end of His earthly ministry to face Jerusalem where He will take up His cross to suffer and die in the hands of the chief priests, elders and religious leaders. So He wanted to be sure that those who have been His closest companions knew who He is and the purpose of His mission. It is very possible one can be with someone for years without knowing exactly who that person is. As a result Jesus wanted to be sure His disciples know Him. His ministry would have been a failure if the apostles did not know their master, as that would have signified the end of His ministry. Another consideration for Jesus question would be, if they know Him as the Messiah do they understand the implication of what His messiah ship entails. Peter’s response proves they know Jesus as the Messiah without knowing the consequence of messiah ship. No wonder when Jesus explains how He would be rejected by elders, the chief priests and the scribes and finally be killed. Peter felt disappointed and could not accept the situation. Peter takes Jesus aside to rebuke Him for saying such an unacceptable thing which prompted Jesus to call Him Satan that His thinking is not as God, but as human. Anyone or anything that prevents one to respond to God’s call could be called a Satan and that is what Jesus means when He called Peter Satan because Peter wanted to obstruct Him from carrying His cross which was His call. It is against this background that the call to carry ones cross as a Christian becomes important since Jesus has led the way for everyone. The call to follow Jesus would always demand carrying our crosses which may come in different forms. Jesus without doubt places this revelation before His disciple that following Him and being His disciple would involve such challenge and that one may not avoid it. For me, the cross is any challenge that comes to one which the person never prayed for or desired it or brought it to oneself. As disciples of Jesus the challenge of the cross comes to us on daily basis, but looking unto Jesus who carried His first led us with faith embracing any particular cross that comes our way. We carry our cross when we accept our problems and difficulties like sickness, disappointments, loss of a loved one, difficult marriage and children that come our way in this life. We offer them to God in prayers without complaints. Let us submit ourselves, our problems and the challenges we face daily to God knowing that he will help us carry them. 24th Sunday in Ordinary Time
We need to get our bearings straight and properly lay life’s cornerstone. Otherwise, the rest of our journey will be
skewed, and our judgment clouded. We can recall Jesus’ famous rebuke of Peter, “You are thinking not as God
does, but as human beings do.” Even he, as one of Jesus’ closest friends struggles with understanding things and
grasping the big picture. Pierre Teilhard de Chardin (1881-1955) a renowned and learned French Jesuit priest
often has these words attributed to him: “We are not human beings having a spiritual experience. We are spiritual
beings having a human experience.” Whether they were actually from his lips, they certainly mimic his thought.
These wise words orient us and capture the essence of who we really are.
Many people consider spirituality an option. It is no wonder that they come to this conclusion when they
predominantly define themselves using human terms and concepts. Immersed in this world view, they struggle
finding any semblance of God because God does not work according to human expectations! This is especially
true when suffering and death enter life’s picture. If we are only human beings having a spiritual experience, then
we wrongly expect our spirituality to serve us as we desire. The human expectation is that my spiritual life is
something that is useful in avoiding pain, hardship, and death, not something that gives the courage to live
through it!
So, when we protest and get upset with God because our journey is becoming difficult, painful, treacherous,
disappointing, and even pointing us toward death, Jesus rebukes us as he did Peter and gently reminds us how to
see. It is God who inspires and opens hearts to see truth and beauty. In God, the true meaning of things is
understood, and we receive a depth of insight and understanding that is not found following purely human paths.
It is not our task to understand God, as God is beyond human understanding. Ours is the joyful privilege of simply
resting in God’s presence simply because God is God and we are who we are. As spiritual beings having an
exciting and adventurous human experience, it is in our DNA to do so. Through prayer we can let go and let be.
Perhaps there is no other book of the Bible that fascinates people more than the book of Revelation. Yet, not too many have studied it, especially from a Catholic perspective. Join us as
we journey on an eleven week study of the Book of Revelation with bible scholar Jeff Cavins. In this study we will take a look at the rich symbolism, discover what the mysterious figures and images mean, and how Revelation is more than a vision of the "end times."
The study begins, virtually, on Monday, September 13 at 6:30 pm via Webex and in person on Wednesday, September 15 at 9:30 am in the Holy Family Parish Center.

Walking Toward Eternity Study
Walking Toward Eternity is an inspiring series designed to help
participants live their faith more fully. Through daily prayerful
meditation with Scripture (lectio divina), they will be drawn into an
intimate and life-changing encounter with Christ. Walking Toward
Eternity, introduces seven key virtues and outlines practical steps
for living them out in daily life.
This study shows how to put our Catholic faith into practice
through prayer and action. The result is real, often-profound
change occurring in people’s lives as they begin living as God intended them to.
This 8-week study begins Thursday, September 16, 2021 in the JPII Garage at 9:30 am.

Choir will soon be returning for Sunday morning worship.
Under the direction of our new Choir Director, Terri McGrath, Thursday evening rehearsals have begun in preparation for the choir beginning to sing at
the 8:45 am Mass on September 12, 2021. Men and Women of high school age and up are invited, encouraged, and welcome to join!
The ability to read music is helpful, but not necessary to be part of the choir, however one does need to be able to match pitch and carry a tune. We are not looking for "solo" quality, just the joy of singing
God's praises in the communal atmosphere of love and praise.
